JAQUELIN MARSHALL BRAXTON, OF KEY WEST, FLORIDA,
CONCRETE FILE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1908.
Application filed April 9, 1906. Serial No. 310.792.
of which-the following is a specification.
The drawing represents a section of a pile with the 'driving shell applied thereto, and the letter, A represents a pile formed of concrete or any desired lastic material and if preferred provided with a reinforcing structure. This pile is preliminarily molded and the metallic driving shoe B attached to the lower end thereof, the top of said shoe being wider or of greater diameter than the ile. Surrounding the pile and spaced there om is a metallic driving shell C resting at its lower end. upon the top of the shoe and extending at its upper end above the top of the pile where it is provided with a driving head I) adapted to receive the impact of the hammer or other pile driving implement used.
The force of the blow is transmitted directly from the shell to the shoe and after the driving of the pile the shell is withdrawn. The formation of the shoe of greater width or diameter than the driving shell forms a hole through the earth or other material into which the pile is inserted, of greater diameter than the pile and driving shell which per- I -mits the easy Withdrawal of said shell after the driving action.
In the operation of the invention the pile is formed and the concrete allowed to set in the usual manner with the shoe attached thereto.- The pile is then introduced into the pile driver leads, and the shell, which is of greater length than the pile and of greater diameter, slipped over the pile so as to rest upon the shoe, when the dr1vin action proceeds in the usual manner. The bIow or impact being applied to the head of the shell transconcrete does not receive any blow and is absolutely protected from 1n ury as the av erage concrete structure cannot withstand through rock or other hard material encountered in securing a foundation. After the pile is driven to a proper depth the driving shell is easily withdrawn 'as the diameter of the top of the shoe provides a clearance space sufiicient forthis pur osc.
Having now described any invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i A concrete pile provided at one, end with a driving shoe having a projection embedded in the pile and a contacting face at the base of said projection extending beyond the sides of the pile, a driving shell spaced from the pile and of greater length, and a head for said shell.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
