UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS OONDICT BAYLES, OF JOHANNESBURG, TRANSVAAL.
ROCK-DRILLIN G-MACHIN E CHUCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS OONDICT BAYLES, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Johannesburg, Transvaal, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rock-Drilling-Uachine Chucks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the chucks of rock-drilling machines, and in particular to that type in which the drill steel or bit is secured in the head by means of a wedge and gripping pad in conjunction with a U bolt. With this type of chuck as at present con structed difiiculty is frequently experienced in inserting the shank end of the steel in renewing the bits, owing to the gripping pad and wedge falling into the bore of the chuck when the bit is removed, consequently necessitating the partial rotation of the chuck to allow the pad to fall sufficiently out of the bore to permit of the insertion of the steel.
One object of my invention is to obviate this defect. The gripping pad and wedge have heretofore had a tendency to disengage the U bolt and fall out of position and another object of my invention is to prevent such disengagement.
A further object is to insure the maintenance of the wedge parallel with the bore of the chuck or axis of the piston rod.
Another defect of the type of chuck referred to has been that the driving forward of the wedge to secure the bit has forced the forward end of the gripping pad against the front end of the pad slot in the chuck. As the chuck head is necessarily made of comparatively soft metal the result has been a distortion of the front head or the gradual hammering outward of the metal of the head at the front end of the slot.
My invention also relates to the construction and arrangement of a half bushing for the chuck. Heretofore the head of the chuck has been constructed with one or more holes or recesses in the bottom to be engaged by a projection or projections formed on the outside of the half bushing. Now this construction has weakened the head and increased the tendency for it to spread or burst when the wedge draws up the U bolt in the operation of securing the bit.
To the attainment of these several objects my invention consists, firstly, in flaring or making bell mouthed the longitudinal groove or recess in the gripping pad which bears Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. July 9, 1907.

on the bit shank, (I prefer to make it flaring at both ends to permit of the reversal of the gripping'pad) and to the provision of longitudinal ribs or projections on the gripping pad which are adapted to engage the top of the head and so prevent the pad falling beyond a certain distance into the bore of the chuck when the drill is removed. Secondly, to the provision on the top of the gripping pad of a rib or projection and a correspondingly shaped longitudinal. recess or groove in the contiguous face of the wedge (or vice versa). Thirdly, to the provision of recesses in the longitudinal ribs or projections on the gripping pad to engage the inside of the U bolt to prevent longitudinal movement of the pad. Fourthly, to the provision of two parallel grooves or recesses formed longitudinally of and in the bore of the head and in providing on the half bushing two corresponding parallel ribs or projections engaging said groove (or vice versa), and fifthly, to the provision in the sides of the half bushing of recesses or grooves which are engaged by the U bolt 'and operate to prevent longitudinal displacement of the half bushing.
By the present improvements it is not possible to remove any part of the chuck or for any part to get out of alinement or position except both nuts of the U bolt be first removed and the U bolt withdrawn.
To facilitate the detailed description of the several improvements I append four sheets of illustrative drawings numbered to correspond with the following description thereof.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the chuck. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the head showing the gripping pad and wedge in elevation. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the gripping pad detached. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the wedge. Fig. 7 is a plan of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a section of Fig. 7 on line mzv. Fig. 9 is an end elevation of the half bushing, and Fig. 10 is a plan of Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a side elevation of Fig. 10. Fig. 12 is an nd elevation of a chuck illustrating certain modifications. Fig. 13 is a longitudinal section, with the pad and wedge in elevation, of the chuck shown in Fig. 12. Fig. 14 is an end elevation of the gripping pad detached. Fig.
15 is a side elevation of Fig. 14. Fig.
16 is a plan of Fig. 15. Fig. 17 is a side elevation of the wedge. Fig. 18 is a plan of Fig. 17. Fig. 19 is a section of Fig. 17 on line y-y. Fig. 20 is an end elevation of the half bushing. Fig. 21 is a plan of Fig. 20, and Fig. 22 is a side elevation of Fig. 21.
Referring to the arrangement illustrated in Figs. 1 to 11, illustrative of certain features of the invention, 1 is the head or body of the chuck fixed to or formed integral with the piston rod 2.
3 is the bore of the chuck in which is secured the shank of the bit or drill steel 4. The drill steel is shown of the ordinary octagonal section but it will be obvious that by suitably shaping the half bushing and gripping pad internally it may be made of any other desired section. The shape shown may in some cases be preferred as it obviates the necessity for shanking or rounding the end of the drill steel 4.
5 is the U bolt, which, as usual, passes through holes 6 formed through the head 1 and has screwed 011 its extremities the retaining nuts 7.
8 is a longitudinal slot formed through the head 1 communicating with the bore 3, and 9 is the gripping pad positioned therein. The gripping pad 9 as shown, is formed on the inside with an angular recess or groove 10 to receive a portion of the drill steel 4. The ends of this groove or recess 10 are made with a flaring mouth or made bell shaped as seen at 11 in Figs. 2, 3.and 4. This configuration of the ends of the gripping pad 9 facilitates the insertion of the drill steel 4 by increasing the size of the opening between the end of the pad and the bushing. In the drawing I show both ends of the pad 9 shaped as described inorder to permit of the pad being reversed if desired. The pad 9 is also fashioned with two parallel longitudinal ribs or projections 12 at the outside, which engage the top of the head 1 along the top edges of the longitudinal slot 8 and so operate to prevent the gripping pad 9 falling into the bore of the chuck beyond a certain point. If desired, these ribs or projections 12 on the gripping pad 9 may be dispensed with and the gripping pad be allowed to fall sufiiciently far into the bore 3 of the chuck for the lower edges 13 to engage the upper edges 14 of the half bushing 15. In the ribs or projections 12 are formed curved recesses 12 which are engaged by the inside of the U bolt 5 and so prevent longitudinal movement of the pad 9 in the slot 8, which obviates the front end of the pad striking the front end of the slot when the wedge is driven forward.
17 is the wedge, the plain face of which, when the wed 'e is in position has contact with the top of the pad 9, so that the wedge and pad slidingly engage each other. The upper or inclined tapered face 19 of the wedge is rounded transverselysee Figs. 1
and 8-to correspond to the curvature of the U bolt 5 which it slidingly engages. This construction operates to retain and guide the wedge when it is driven in either direction and insures it being maintained parallel to the bore 3 of the chuck or longitudinal axis of the drill steel 4.
20 are lugs or projections on the ends of the Wedge 17 to assist in preventing it disengaging the U bolt 5 and for receiving the impact-s of a hammer for driving the wedge in either direction.
The half bushing 15 is constructed along each edge on the outside with projections 21 and in the bore of the chuck are formed correspondingly shaped grooves or recesses 22 engaged thereby. This secures the half bushing 15 against rotary movement in the bore 3 of the chuck. The half bushing 15 is shown recessed longitudinally at 23 to receive a portion of the drill steel 4. The bolt holes 6 intersect the longitudinal grooves or recesses 22 in the bore of the chuck and in the sides or upper edges 14 of the half bushing 15 are formed recesses 24 which are engaged by the bolt 5 and serve to prevent longitudinal displacement of the half bushing 15.
The construction described in connection with Figs. 1 to 11 is that preferred for new chucks.
Referring now to the construction illus trate in Figs. 12 to 22, I illustrate the application of certain features of the invention to a standard type of rock-drill chuck. The same numerals of reference indicate the same or corresponding parts in these figures of the drawings. In this construction, on the top of the gripping pad 9 and longitudinally thereof is provided a rib or projection 16. The wedge 17 on its inner parallel edge is constructed with a longitudinal groove or recess 18 in which the projection 16 on the pad 9 fits, so that the wedge and pad slidingly engage each other. This construction serves as a retaining and guiding means for the wedge 17 and insures it being maintained parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bore 3 of the chuck or drill steel 4. The upper inclined or tapered edge 19 of the wedge 17 slidingly engages the inside of the U bolt 5.
It will be apparent that instead of forming the projection 16 011 the pad 9 and the recess 18 on the wedge 17, the recess may be formed in the pad and the projection on the wedge.
The recesses 24 in the half bushing 15, with which the U bolt 5 engages, are made sufficiently long to provide for the reversal of said bushing, as the U bolt is not in this case positioned at the center of the longitudinal ribs or projections 21 as in the previously described construction. l/Vhen in position the U bolt 5 engages the same end of each of the recesses 24 and when the half bushing is reversed it engages the opposite end of each of the recesses 24:.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letter Patent is 1.
