UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHARES M. MISHLER, OF HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND.
FENCE-POST.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601 ,448, dated March 29, 1898. Application filed December 2, 1897. Serial No. 660,520. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHARES M. MISHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hagerstown, in the county of Washington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in fence-posts; and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of my device. Fig. 2 is also a vertical sectional View showing the post with the rammer attached, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the fence-post, comprising the base or point a and a tubular post or pipe portion 12, which is securedto the drive-point, with its lower end expanded, as at cl. This base is provided with flanges c, tapering from top to the bottom or extreme point of the base. This post I) is provided with kerfs e, in which the horizontal wires f of the-fence are held, and a long keyor fastening-rod g, as well as a cap 77., upon the top B represents a cushion, of rubber or other suitable material, and the same is arranged within the post and at the lower portion thereof and upon the upper surface of the base, for a purpose presently explained.
The base is pointed in the usual manner, and the crown thereof is of sufficient thickness to conceal the lower end of the pipe, which is spread laterally, thus providing a wedgeshaped connection between the pipe and base.
In operating my device the person places the cushion within the pipe and inserts a rammer 7 The point is then driven into the ground by repeated blows upon the upper end of the rammer, while the cushion between the lower end thereof and the top of the point receives the full force of each blow. Thus while the point is readily driven into the earth the cushion prevents said point or any portion connected therewith from being broken, which usually happens when driving a point in the earth without a protector, as herein described.
In stringing the wires upon the post the same are placed within the kerfs thereon, after which the key-rod is inserted into the top of the post and forced downwardly and between the wires and the inner face of the post, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, after which the cap h is removably secured to the top of. the post, thereby retaining the keyrod and locking the wires to said post.
When it is desired to remove any or all the wires from the post, the cap is removed and the key-rod can be withdrawn, thus freeing the wires from the kerfs.
It will be observed from the above description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, that in driving the point. into the ground the top of the post is relieved from the blows necessary to drive said point, and instead the rammer is inserted within the post and receives the blow and the cushion receives the shock, which prevents any shock to the point and at the same time permits the point to be driven into the earth and at the same time prevents said point or any portion thereof from breaking, and it is durable and cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a fence-post, the combination of the tubular post provided with the outwardlycurved lower end, and the point cast thereto, whereby the two parts are inseparable, as shown and described.
2. In a tubular fence-post, the combina- PHARES M. MISHLER.
