Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WVILLIAM J. MUL- LALEY and JOHN E. SoHnNoK, citizens of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the 5 county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rectangular Cans for Dried Beef and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in the construction of rectangular sheet metal cans for containing dried beef and other articles.
The object of our invention is to provide a rectangular sheet metal can of a simple,
efficient, strong and durable construction,
adapted to be hermetically sealed and conveniently opened, and having a slip cover for again closing the same after having been once opened, and adapted for use for containing dried beef or other articles requiring to be hermetically sealed.
Our invention consists in the means we employ to practically accomplish this object or result. That is to say, it consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described and more particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical, longitudinal section of a sheet metal can embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 33 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a top or plan view with the outer cover removed. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view showing one corner of the inner cover and Fig. 6 is a similar view show- 40 ing one corner of the outer or slip cover.
In the drawing, A represents the bottom of the can, having integral, upright sides A and A the upright ends of the can body, the same being preferably formed in separate pieces from the body A and upright sides A The upright sides A are furnished at each end thereof with right angle flanges a, and the bottom A with similar upright flanges a to receive the upright end plates A which are soldered thereto, thus forming hermetically tight joints uniting the ends A with the bottom A and upright sides A The upright sides A and upright ends A are each furnished with an inturned downwardly projecting fold or flange a which is provided with an inwardly projecting flange a, to give the can body a smooth edge at its top and to form an inwardly projecting shoulder to receive the downturned flange of the inner thin or taggers tin hermetic cover B. The thin taggers tin inner hermetic cover B is provided with integral downwardly projecting flanges I) at its sides and ends adapted to iit within the mouth of the can body at the four sides thereof, and, to be soldered to the downwardly projecting lold or flange a on the upright sides and ends of the can body, the horizontally or inwardly projecting flanges a forming a shoulder for the downturned flanges of the cover B to lit against and hold the cover in place during the soldering operation, while the solder C is applied in the soldering groove or channel b formed between the flange b of the cover B and the soldering flange a on the upright sides and ends of the can body.
The thin or taggers tin inside hermetic cover B is furnished with a vent b to enable the can to be vacuumized or the air to be withdrawn therefrom after the can has been filled and the cover B soldered thereon. This vent hole is soldered up in the vacuum chamber of the vaeuumizing machine.
D is the outside cli cover made of ordinary or heavy tin for c osing the can while its contents are being used after the can has been opened by cutting out the thin or taggers tin inside hermetic cover B. The outside slip cover D has integral right angle flanges (Z at its sides and ends which lit over and embrace the upper end of mouth of the can body.
WVe'hereby disclaim the cans shown and described in the Mumsen Patent No. 75,189, the Norton Patent No. 364,665, the Wallace Patent No. 67 3,550 and the Ghirardelli Patent No. 7 46,815, our invention being the rectangular hermetic closure can hereinbefore described.
We claim 1. In a sheet metal rectangular hermetic closure can, the combination of a body A having integral upright sides A and integral flanges a, said u right sides A having integral right angle anges a, separate piece upright ends A soldered to said flanges on the bottom and upright side, said 11 right sides A and ends A having inturned ownwardly projecting folds or flanges 0. fitting flat thereagainst and inwardly projecting flanges c of a thin or taggers tin inside hermetic covers B having downturned flanges b at its sides and ends fitting within and soldered to said downturned flanges or folds at the u per end of the can body, and a slip cover I? having downturned flanges fitting and embracing the upper end of the rectangular can body, substantially as specified.
2. In a sheet metal rectangular hermetic closure can, the combination of a body A having integral upright sides A and integral flanges a, said upright sides A having integral right angle flanges a separate piece upright ends A soldered to said flanges on the bottom and upright sides, said upright sides A and ends A having inturned downwardly projecting folds or flanges a fitting flat thereagainst and inwardly projecting flanges (1 of a thin or taggers tin inside hermetic cover B having downturned flanges b at its sides and ends fitting within and soldered to said downturned flanges or folds at the upper end of the can body, substantially as specified.

The rectangular hermetic closure can herein shown and described and comprising a bottom with integral upright sides, separate piece ends hermetically secured at their edges to said bottom and upright sides, said upright sides and ends being provided at their upper edges with inturned folds or flanges and inwardly projecting flanges fitting flat thereagainst and a hermetic closure cover having downturned flanges fitting within the mouth of the can body and soldered thereto, substantially as specified.

The rectangular hermetic closure can herein shown and described and comprising a bottom with integral u right sides, separate piece ends hermetical y secured at their edges to said bottom and upright sides, said upright sides and ends being provided at their upper edges with inturned folds or flanges fitting flat thereagainst and inwardly projecting flanges and a hermetic closure herein shown and described and comprising a bottom with integral u right sides, separate piece ends hermetical y secured at their edges to said bottom and upright sides, said upright sides and ends being provided at their upper edges with inturned folds or flanges tting flat thereagainst and inwardly projecting flanges and a hermetic closure cover having downturned flanges fitting within the mouth of the can body and soldered thereto, and an outer slip cover having integral flanges at its sides and ends and embracing the upper end of the can body, substantially as specified.
6. The rectangular hermetic closure can herein shown and described and comprising a bottom with integral u right sides, separate piece ends hermetical y secured at their edges to said bottom and upright sides, said upright sides and ends being provided at their upper edges with inturned folds or flanges fitting flat thereagainst and inwardly projecting flanges and a hermetic closure cover having downturned flanges fitting within the mouth of the can body and soldered thereto, said inside fitting hermetic cover having a vent to enable the can to be vacuumized after it is filled and its cover sol-.
