Description

@anni 69mm WILLIAM H..GR1SCOM, 0F SALEM,'NEW. JERsEY",`
Leners Patent' 1ro. 87,842, imam/rch 16, 1869.
mnovnMEN-r m GATE'.
The Sehednle referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the um.
To-all whomvit may concern: Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. GRISCOM, of Salem, in the oo unty of Salem, and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and useful Improvementin Farm-Gates; and '-I dohereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention or improvement in farm-gates.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same.
The object of my invention is vto make a simple and very cheap farm-gate, that a farmer can make without any iron-work or other expensive parts. Y
A My invention consists of a panel of rails, with posts and slides, so arranged that the bottom of the gate will always rest on at least two of the slides, and be held between two of the posts,'so that the panel cannot be moved by the wind, and will not sag or require any braces whatever.
In the construction of my improved gate, the panel of rails may be put together in the simplest manner, as represented at F, iig. l, the parts being only nailed together.
On each side of the'gateway I set two posts, in the usual manner, with cap at top, to prevent the post from swaying with the wind.
At the foot of the posts I set slides H, one of which ,l is shown in dotted lines, for `the gate to rest and slide upon.
Anotherslide -is placed near the middleof the gate, between the posts, and a fourth slide, or rest, is set at E, to support and guide the gate when moved nearly becoming smooth by wear between the bottom-rail and y slides.
I do not broadly claim 'a `sliding gate, but confine my claims to the above-described improvements.
Thus, having described my invention, I claim the panel or gate F, when supported by and moved upon the simple slides, or rests H and E, substantially as set forth. 'l
I also claim a gate which, upon sliding to one side, always' rests upon slides, and when moved tothe other side may be balanced and swung round, as shown in dotted lines in iig. 2.
Witnesses:
DANIEL BREED,
WM. H. GRIsooM.
