JOHN W. LAPPIN, OF KOKOMO, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES A. STYER, OF
KOKOMO, INDIANA.
COMBINED MOP HEAD AND WRINGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. LAPPIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Combined Mop Head and WVringer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to combined mop heads and wringers and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a mop and wringer combined which may be used to advantage for scrubbing, rubbing itnd wiping floors, walls, windows and the like.
The device consists primarily of a frame to which is attached a handle and a strip of rubber. A pair of rollers is journaled in the said frame and receive between them a mop cloth. One of the said rollers is mounted to move or slide laterally in the frame and a spring is operatively connected with the last said roller for the purpose of holding the laterally movable roller in contact with or toward the other roller.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mop head with the cloth removed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the mop head with the cloth applied thereto, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of one end of the frame' The mop comprises the rectangular frame 1 which is provided with a socket 2 in which is inserted and secured the end of the handle 3. Said frame 1 is provided at its rear edge with a strip of rubber 4 or other flexible material which lies transversely with relation to the handle 3. The roller 5 is journaled in the frame 1 as is also the roller 6. The shaft of the roller 6 passes through the elongated opening 7 provided in the sides of the frame 1 and is fixed to the links 8. The said links 8 are also provided with elongated openings 9 which receive the extreme ends of the shaft of the roller 5. The spring 10 is attached to the forward end of the frame 1 and the ends of the said spring engage the links 8. The tension of said spring is such as to hold the links 8 as far as possible in advance of the rear edge of the frame 1 and as the shaft of the roller 6 moves with the said links and the roller 5 is retained against lateral movement by the ends of the frame 1 the said spring 9 holds the said rollers in contact with each other or in the vicinity of each other. The mop cloth 11 may be of suitable material and is provided at its opposite ends with a wire selvage edge 12 which prevents the said cloth from passing entirely through said rollers. That is to say, the wire selvage will come in contact with the rollers as the mop cloth is drawn between the same and serve as a check for the cloth. Each selvage 12 is provided with an eye 13 and the handle 3 is provided with a hook 14 which is adapted to enter and retain one of theeyes 13 and thus hold the mop cloth in extended position, its opposite end being retained between the said rollers.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that the cloth may be passed between the rollers 5 and 6 for wringing the same. Also that the said rollers may be separated against the tension of the spring 9 for the urpose of entirely removing the mop cloth 11; that the said mop cloth may be held in extended position for mopping or wiping and that it may be wound around the rollers for scrubbing; also the strip of rubber 4 may be used for rubbing windows, tiled walls and floors and other surfaces requiring polish.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is A mop head comprising a frame having elongated openings in its sides, a handle attached to the frame and with relation to which the frame is fixed, a roller journaled in the frame and being retained against lateral movement therein and having a shaft which projects beyond the sides of the frame, a roller having a shaft which projects through the openings in the sides of the frame and being capable of lateral movement therein, links having elongated openings which re ceive the ends of the shaft of the roller retained against lateral movement and bearings Which receive the ends of the shaft of the roller having lateral movement said links being located against the sides of the frame and being capable of longitudinal movement independent of each other and a spring fixed to the frame and having ends Which engage said links.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiiXed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
' JOHN W. LAPPIN.
