UNITED STATES PATENT enema CLARENCE L. GREILIOK, OF TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNDR TO THE TRJlVEBSEEJCITY CHAIR 00., .OF TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN, A COPARTNERSHIP.
HINGE Fonfuonms exams, at."
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1,908.1
Application filed august 16 1907. Serial No. 3885858- The object of the present invention isto improve the construction of hinges having separable members to provide a simple,
strong, and durable hinge of this character adapted to be cheaply manufactured, and capable of permitting a separation of its parts only w on the back of the Morris chair is in a horizontal position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the contruction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in they accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto ap ended; it being understoodthat various c nges in the form, proportion,-siz e, and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing an of the advantages ofthe invention, 3
n the drawing, Figure 1 is a rearel'ev ition of the Morris chair provided with hinges con-- structed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on the .line X-X of Fig. 1. Fig.3 is av sectional view taken substantially on the line y-- y of Fig. 2 Fig. 4 is a data I perspective view of the pivot plate. Fi 5 is a similar view of the supporting mom 1 or bracket-t, Fi 6 is a plan view of the same illustratihg t e'form of the entrance slot.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
1 designates a supporting member or bgacket, designed to beisecured to theinner faces of thesides 'or arms 2 of a Morris chair, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing; The ,bracket oi supporting member of the" hin' e may be conveniently stamped from a sing e piece of stoutksheet metal, or itmay consist of a casting, or be formed ur 'any other preferredmanner. It, embodies up or and lower attaching portions or cars 3 an 4, and an intermediate horizontally pro'ecting oil-set bearing portion, substantia y U- .sists of a horizontal projecting in dotte lines in Fig,- 2," and t necting wall 6 and the lower'end of the upper 85 attach ng portion 3 of'the supporting mema shaped in vertical section, and consisting of a vertical outer wall 5 and upper and lorwer horizontal connecting walls 6. and 7. The attaching portions 3 ands are provided with counter-sunk'openings for the reception of screws or other suitable fastening devices for securing the supporting member or bracket to the side or arm 2, and the vertical wall 5 is provided with a circular bearing openin 8 to receive a pivot pivot p ate or member 16.
The pivot plate or member 10 is provided with counter-sunk openings for the reception of screws for securing it to the side edges of the frame of the back 11 of the Morris chair, 7 audit is constructed of sheet metal or other The pivot portion 9 confiange, arranged at the lower end of the plate 10, and
suitable material.
curved transversely, as clearly shown in Fi 4 of the drawin The curved flan e, whic is approximate y semi cylindrica,' has a lower-convex bearing face fit the bottom of the circular fllbearingopening 8.- The curved flange is introduced into and removed from the openin m anledgewlse position,
when the back 0 lthe'Morris chair is in substantiall a horizontal position as illustrated he upper 0011- her or bracket are provided with a narrow entrance slot 12. The curved flange,
nected from the arms when it is in an inclined position in use.
While the separ b le hin e is shown applied to a Morris chair, yetit .wi be readily understood that. it may be advantageously @PQTEB so that when the pivot Qis in pace, itKgoo spaced above and .out of con act w th the N7 said lower connectingwalli oraover, the langfh of the'pivot 9 is lesstl'lan the length. -0t' Havin thus fully described my invention,
e off-set bearing portion.
what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 A separable hinge of the class describedcomprising a sup orting member orbracket V having upper an lower attaching portions portion 9 of a 65 z being of greater width than the entrance slot,j ,,tl prevents the back from becoming d1scon-" 0 r or ears provided With an intermediate pro jecting off-set bearing portion consisting of a Vertical Wall having a circular bearing opening and upper and lower horizontaj connecting Walls, the upper connectingv Wall and the upper attaching portion being pro.- vided with a narrow entrance slot extending to and in communication with the bearing v in the opening, and a pivot plate or member provlded with a projecting substantially semicyhndrical flange forming a pivot and presenting a lower convexed bearing far/i said through the entrance slot, the bearing opening being above the lower connecting Wall so as to space the pivot out of contact with said W ll.
11p te timony, that I claim the foregoing as F loviai; I have hereto aflixed my signature es'encb of two Witnesses. I
CLARENCE l4. GREILICK.
