` the wrench onthe line m2 :1:2 of Fig. 1.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS LARSON, OF BRIELYN, MINNESOTA.
WRENCH.
' an improved wrench-for applying and removing fusible safety plugs, such as are generally used. in connection with threshing machine engine boilers, and to this end it consists of the -novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims. As is well known, these safety plugs are usually yapplied to the crown'sheet or top plate of the fire box where they cannot be reached by ordinary means when there is ire within the'iire box or when the fire box is hot. Hence, in practice, it very 'frequently happens that much time is Wasted when one of these fusibleplugs is burned out, because a person cannot enter the fire box and replace the plug until after the fire is put out and the re box cooled off.
My invention provides a very simple and -convenient device by means of which one of these plugs may be removed and another re placed without waiting for the re box to pgol H and, in fact, without putting out the e. In the accompanying drawin indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings; Figure, 1 is a plan viewof the improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinalv section taken thrlpugh i .3 is an end elevation of the wrench lookingg at the same from the ri ht toward the left with respect'to Figs. 1 an 2; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line a# :v4 of Fig. 2. y
The wrench socket or plug en aging head 1 of the wrench is secured to a s ort shaft 2 that is journaled in` a bearing yoke 3 and is provided with a bevel gear 4. The bevel gear 4 meshes with a .bevel ear 5 that is carried'by a long driving shaf end of which is journaled in a suitable bearing sleeve 7 on said yoke 3. The shaft 6 extendsl preferably, as shown, at an angle of ninety vdegrees tothe shaft moved pivota s which iuustrate the improved device, li echaracters t 6, the inner" .Specication of Letters Patent. Application filed June 14. 1907. Serial llo. 378.941.
Patented` Jan. 28, 1908.
shaft 6 is extended through a long tube or sleeve extension 8, the inner end of which is shown as screwed into thesleeve 7 so that it is thereby rigidly secured to the bearing yoke or head 3: At its extreme outer end, the shaft 6 is provided with a hand operated crank 9 by means of which the said shaft 6 and hence the shaft 2 in the socket 1 may be rotated at will in either direction. Avhand piece 10 is rigidly secured to the tube 8 nearA its outerend.
On the-tube 6, some little distance from the bearing yoke 3, is a spilt collar 11` to the prongs of which is pivotallyattached the tubularv member 12 of an extensible supporting leg; the extensible member 13 of |which is provided at its-lower end with a bearing foot 14. The leg member 13 is in the form'of a rodv that is telescoped into the tubular member 1,2 and is adapted to be held in any adjustment in respect thereto, as shown, by a set screw 15 screwed through aseat in one side of said member 12. The lug in the upper end of the member 12, which is clamped between the prongs of the split collar 11 by a boltv16, is rounded on one side so that the extensible le is adapted to be bolted or I but is provided with a stop shoulder 17 at its other side which limits the movement ofthe extensible leg toward the crank -9 to a osition approximately at a right angle to t e shaft 6.
Inusing the wrench above described, theI extensible leg 12-13 should be so adjus'ted that when rested upon the grate or upon material detained upon the grate, will serve 'as a support or fulcrum over which the sleeve 'or tube 8 may be rocked to force the socket 1 inward and thereby hold the same 'in engagement with the plug that is to be applied or removed from working position in the' crown sheet or fire box.' When the wrench is thus a plied and held with one Ahand a plied to the hand piece 1'() and the other app ied to the crank 9, it is evident that the socket 1y may be readily rotated in either direction as is required to apply orremove the plug.
It is sometimes desirable to support the 2. yThe body of the `wrench from the Hue sheet of the boller, and
when this is toi be done the extensible leg may be movedA ivotally against the bearing yoke 3 and the then serve as a base of support for the wrench. 10 better `adapt the foot 14 for oot 14thereof engaged with the ends of the flue, so that the latter will 110 application to the ends of the Hues, it may be provided with projections 14 that will adapt it to enter the ends of the lues; or, if.
desired, asiinple straight rod may be substituted for the leg section 13.
The device described, While simple, is highly ellicient l or the purposes had inview, and by its use very great saving in time, not only of the person using the saine but with an entire threshing crew, may be accomplished.
What I claim isz- 1. In a wrench of the kind described, the combination with a gear supporting head having a long extended bearing, of a long driving shaft journaled in said extended bearing and provided at its outer end with means lor rotating it, a relatively short sha'l t journaled in said head extending at an angle to the said driving shaft and provided at one end with a wrench socket or head, gears conu necting the said two shafts, and a supporting leg applied to the .intermediate portion of said extended shaft, substantially 4as described.
2. In a Wrench of the kind described, the combination with a gear supporting head, a long sleeve extension provided at its extended end with a hand piece, along driving shaft journaled in said sleeve and provided at its outer end with an operating crank, a relatively short shaft journaled in said head extending approximately at a right angle. to said driving shaft and provided at one-end with a wrench socket, bevel gears connecting said two shai' ts, and a supporting leg applied to the intermediate portion oi said s eeve, substantially as described.
3. In a wrench, of the kind described, the combination with a gear supporting head having a long sleeve provided at its extended end with a hand piece, a driving shaft journaled in said sleeve and provided at its extended end with an operating crank, a
relatively short shalt journaled in said supporting head and provided at one end with' a Wrench socket, gears connecting said tWo shafts, and a longitudinal telescopical ex- ,tensible supporting leg pivotally' connected to the intermediate portion. ofesaid sleeve, ,substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature -1n presence of two witnesses.
