To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMO D A. CR EK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Books Having a Pocket, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved advertising means whereby monthly magazines and other periodicals, or books, may be provided with a pocket or receptacle wherein samples of merchandise, or literature descriptive of articles to be sold, or other matter to be advertised can be placed for conveyance to the readers.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention and referring to said drawing Figure 1 is a transverse section of a magazine on the line 11 of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 11 of Fig. 3 showing the book open, and Fig. 3 is a detail in side view of a magazine, partially broken away toeXpose the pocket.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts, throughout the several views of the drawing.
It is well known that there is a great and constant demand for novel and effective advertising mediums, and particularly for a means for distributing samples of merchandise at small expense.
My invention contemplates the formation of slots through the leaves in the middle portion of a magazine or book, adjacent to the hinges of the leaves, said slots of the several leaves being in register with each other when the magazine is closed, so that, the combined area of the slots will form a pocket or receptacle capable of receiving small articles.
In the accompanying drawings 4 represents the leaves of a magazine or other publication, and 5 a receptacle or pocket formed adjacent to the hinges of the leaves by punching out the requisite area of the leaves to give the desired opening. Only the leaves at the middle or inner portion of the magazine are slotted, the remaining outside leaves being left whole to form closures on each side of the cavity or pocket produced by the aggregate slots of the inside leaves. This pocket may be placed midway of the ends of the magazine, as shown in the drawing, or the middle portion may be left intact for stapling or stitching of the leaves together, and the pocket formed on one or both sides of the said middle. Obviously, the slots will be cut or punched in the leaves before the binding is complete, and before the outside whole leaves are gathered.
Within the receptacle ust formed samples of dress goods or other fabrics, rolled into compact form, with. printed explanation and other desirable matter, may be placed without further protection or cover than the perforated leaves afi'ord. As shown in Fig. 2, the opening up of the magazine or book will allow access to the pocket and the ready removal of whatever is contained therein.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A magazine or book having leaves with slotted portions adjacent to the hinges of the leaves to form a pocket or a receptacle, and additional unslotted leaves on each side of the slotted leaves to close the pocket.
'2. A magazine or book having leaves with slotted portions adjacent to the hinges of the leaves to form a pocket or receptacle, additional unslotted leaves oneach side of the slotted leaves to close the pocket, and a container removably placed within the pocket.
