To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHEsTnR A. SCOTT and ALLEN F. VVHIPPLE, both citizens of the United States of America, residing at Fort Bragg, in the county of Mendocino and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Ferrules, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to detachable ferrules for canes, crutches, and umbrellas, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide means whereby, when the tip or buffer at the lower end of the cane, crutch or umbrella. has been worn out, a new one may be readily connected to the ferrule by any person without the use of special tools.

Another object of the invention is to improve and simplify the manner of connecting rubber or other tips to the lower ends of '20 canes, umbrellas, crutches and similar articles.

These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the lower end of a cane, and showing a tip or buffer held in place by means of a detachable ferrule made in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tip or buffer. Fig. 3 is a detail section showing the detachable ferrule. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view showing the socket member secured to the lower end of a cane or umbrella. Fig.

5 is a'transverse sectional view on the line as 55, Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing for a more par ticular description of our invention, the numeral 1 designates the lower end of a cane or umbrella, and fitted to said lower end is the permanent member of the ferrule comprising a socket portion 2 secured to the cane or umbrella by means of a pin 3. A partition 4 near the lower end of the socket 2 provides an abutment for the lower end of the cane or umbrella. A screw hole is made through this partition, and a countersunk screw a passes through this screw hole and firmly holds the permanent member to the end of the stick 1. Extending below said partition 4 is a tubular threaded seat 5. The detach able ferrule consists of a threaded portion 6 adapted to fit within the seat 5, said ferrule having a partition 7 provided with a central opening 8, and the lower end of the ferrule being gradually reduced or tapered, as at 9. The tip or buffer comprises a flange 9 and a body portion 10 of less diameter than the flange, said tip or buffer being detachably fitted in the ferrule with the flange member 9 resting upon the partition 7 and with the body portion 10 projected through the opening 8, and out through the tapered portion 9. The ferrule is then attached to the seat 5 and can be readily detached by turning the ferrule to remove the buffer or tip 10.

From the foregoing it will beobvious that a detachable ferrule made in accordance with our invention may be removed from the seat for the purpose of inserting a new tip or buffer, and can be readily connected to the seat after the buffer has been dropped in place in the ferrule.
