Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SLAYDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denlson, in the county of Grayson, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 111 Glands or Swab-Holders and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,- such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to glands, or what are commonly called swabs for en circling piston and valve rods, and similar mechanical devices to keep the same lubricated and prevent them from rusting and cutting away their packings when in operation.
It is the object of my invention to provide a gland or swab that can readily be applied, that will be efficient and durable when in use, and that after once having its packing thoroughly oiled before the gland is secured in place, can readily be lubricated by an ordinary oil-can without removing it from the piston or other red.
The nature of the invention is ascertainable from the device portrayed in the an nexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, in view of which it will first be described in detail with respect to its construction and mode of operation and then be pointed out with particularity in the subjoined claims.
Of the said drawingsFigure 1 is a side View of one side of the improved gland, partially open. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, a portion of the piston (represented by dotted lines) being shown as encompassed by the gland.
Similar numerals of reference designate similar parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the drawings the gland is shown as composed of two sections 6 and 7 hinged together at one side by knuckles and a fixed pintle 8, and separably connected at the other side by knuckles and a removable pintle 9.
The outer rim 10'with its sides 11 and 12 form the box for the receipt of the packing 13 of wool or waste to hold the lubricant. From the inner edge of the side 11 there extends inward in line with the rod 14, a flange 15 that serves to hold the packing in the gland, said flange 15 being perforated at frequent intervals, as designated by 16, to let the lubricant through. from the packing to the rod 14.
The side 12 is partially cut away centrally and circularly, as at 17, and the opening formed thereby is covered by fine wire netting 18 which is secured in place by heavy lunar wires 19 that bound the margins of said openings, the said wires being secured to said margins by solder which also secures the margins of the Wire netting in place.
In preparing the gland to be placed on a piston or other red, wool or other suitable substance 13 is crowded into the box formed by the gland, being well forced under the flange 15, and said packing is thoroughly lubricated when the gland is clasped upon the rod 14 and secured thereon by forcing the removable pintle 9 through the knuckles on the separable sides.
When the lubricant in the packing requires renewal, it will be supplied thereto through the wire netting 18 that covers the openings in the side 12 between the wires 19.
It will thus be seen that, among other things, the gland need not be removed from the rod until the packing needs renewal.
The flange 15 helps to keep the packing in the gland without interfering with the flow of the lubricant to the red, the said lubricant passing through the numerous perforations made therethrough.
What is claimed is As an article of manufacture, a gland or swab comprising a box formed in two parts hinged together at one side and separably connected at the other, one side at its inner edge being provided with a perforated flange to keep the packing in the gland, the other side having openings covered with fine woven-wire bound with lengths of wire, both secured in place by solder.
