WELL-STRAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1906.
Ap umaonnea November 11, 1905. Serial a... 286,901.
To all 1041 01111, if 7H/(II/ mime/v.
, Be it known that I, Josnrn ILAICEvoY. a. citizen of the United Stat es. residing at 1louston, in thecounty of Harris, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful lm rovenients in Yell-Strainers. of which. the tollowing is a. specification. reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
' This invention relatesto a well-strainer. and particularly to a. cap or plug applied directly to an aperture in a pipe section used for wells.
The invention has'for an object to prevent the weakening of the pipesection due to the formation of apertures or slits therein and also the danger of destructionor injury to screens or wrapping carried upon the outer face of the straining-section of the piping.
\Yith that object in viewthe present invention consists in a cap or plug disposed within a suitable aperture in the pipe-section and provided with openings therethrough to effect a straining and filtering action in the passage of the water. oil. or other liquid into the pipe-section. These caps or plugs comletely fill thev apertures and retain substantially-the original strength otthe pipe-section so as to prevent binding or distortion thereof under pressure and also the closing of the slotted sections due to similar pressure when formed directly in the wall of the pipe-sec-- tion.
Gther and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective of a pipe-section having the invention applied thereto. l ig. 2 is a detail vertical section showing the application of several moditied towns of the invention. Fig. is a sectional perspective of one of the caps or plugs. Fig. r is a perspective view of the cap shown in lrig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the form shown in Fig. Tl, Fig. 6 is a vertical section of a modified form having a holding-cap to retain a filtering-packing in position. Fig. T is a similar view of the form shown in Fig. o with the cap separated and packing removed. Fig. 5 is vertical section of a modified form of the invention wherein a disk is used to retain theiilteringpacking in position. and Fig. '9 is a similar View with the disk separated from the cap and the packing removed therefrom.
.while the filtering material Like numerals of reference denote like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
"The ligurc' l designates a pipe-section provid ed wit h apertures of any desired coniigi1rationl'or instance. circularas herein shown. These apertures are adapted to be completely filled by a cap or plug 2, as shown in Figs. 3 and -l-. which is forced and retained therein, so as to completely close the aperture and retainthe original strength of the pipe-section. These plugs are suitably apertured, so as to secure the desired straining action. stance, slits 01'- slots 3 may be extended across the face thereof and are. outwardly flared at their inner portion. as shown at 4, so -as to provide a clearance-space to prevent clogging-ofthe slots by sand or other obstructing matter which may lodge therein.
These caps or plugs are provided with side The straining action is secured by the width of the slot. while the periphery of the cap retains the necessary strength to resist compression of the slots or slits and also to maintainthe strength of the pipe-section, which is essenwalls (3. as shown inFig.
'tial owing to the extended length of the pipe therein and its weight.
Lnder some conditions of use it 1s dCSHGd 'to arrange the cap or plug so as to retain a filtering material of any desired characterfor instance, as shown in Figs. 6 and S. In Fig. 6 this material 7 is retained in position by the holding-cap 5. provided with slots or slitstl, similar in construction and arrangement to those of the cap adapted to he inserted within the wall 6 thereof. thus forming a complete filtering-cap adapted for insertion in the pipe-apertures. A similar result may be obtained by the modified form of cap, as shown at 10in Fig. 8. where apertures 11 are provided in lieu of the slots 3 and simila rlv inwardly tapered to provide a clearance. 12 is disposed within the side wall 13 of the cap and retained by the disk 1-1:, provided with apertures 15 therein to pernnt free passage of liquid therethrough.
It will be seen that when the caps or plugs are inserted in the apertures in the pipe-section either a strainer or filter may be provided-therein. while the beveled configuration of the slots or aperture-s provides a clearance for any sand .or other material which may tend to clog the strainer, and
F or inwhen a filtering-packing. is used all of the finer material is retained therein, so that the liquid entering the pi e-section is thoroughly,
I causing the same to enter the pipe and injure the pump parts, as well as rendering the pumped iquid objectionable owing to its presence therein. The invention also obviates the use of gauze or wrappings applied to the outer face of the pipe-sections, which are liable to become loose and detached in the operation of the pump or forcing of the pipe 1n position, partlcularly if the strainersection when inserted strikesor contacts with any object within the well. It also obviates the use of the slots or slits in the body of the pipe-section, by which the material is weak ened so as to cause the bending or buckling thereof and conse uent distortion of the slits, as the plugs w. en inserted retain sub stantially the original strength of the section and comprise a strainer or filtering device wholly within the outer periphery of the pipe, so as to be protected 'from injury and yet capable of most efficient action in the operation of the invention.
Having now described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A straining cap or plug having a head provided with a circumferential side wall and plugs the same may be readily re mediate solid ortions of the head connected to the side wa l. l
2. In a well-strainer, a cap or plug havin straining-openings and a circumferentia side wall, and an apertured closure-plate for insertion within said side wall.
3. In a wellstrainer, a ca having strain-' ing-openings and formed with a circumferential side wall, filtering-packing inserted within said cap, and a ertured means disposed so within said side we 1 for retaining the packing in position.
4. In a well-strainer, a pipe-section provided with an aperture therein, a caphaving straining-openings and formed with a cir'cum- '55' ferential side wall, a filtering-packing inserted within said ca and apertured means 111*- serted within sai side wall for retaining the I I packing in position.
JOS. H. MoEVOY.
