THOMAS HALL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Loox AND LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application filed April 6. 1906- Serial No. 310.216.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS HALL, a citi'- zen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,
county of Kin s, city and State of New York, have invente zcertain new andl useful lmprovements in Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to make aI f ism connecting them can be varied in sevlockin lever.
eral ways; 'two forms] are shown ofthe connecting mechanism between the spindle and the latch. i y
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. Figure 1 is a sectional plan of lock and latch, inserted in wood work. Fig. 2 is an elevationfrom the ,outer side of door, with spindle in. section. Fig. 3 isa sectional elevation of mortise lock. Fig., 4 is the inside handle or knobin the form of a bell. 5 is a section of spindle and Fi k6 isa-sectional elevation from t e inside. Fi 7 is the outerknobor handle showing keyole. Fi .(8 shows the connection between the spin le guide, and the frame of mortise'clock. x Fig. 9 shows a half mortise lock case havin a modification of mechanism 'for operating t e latch.
Like figures refer to like parts.
In Fig. 1v is shown in section a mortise lock let into a door,`having, push and pull knobs in place and connected .1n operative condition 1 is a section ofa ldoor j amb 2 is the door, 9 is the latch havin pins 29 projecting from each side, shown in 1g. 1 as resting against the i inside of the face plate, the` other'end of the latch at 28 rests .on a ledge which is p'art of face plate 27 and is held in that position at 25 by lever 18 fulcrumed atf19.
30 are curves on sides of latch case over .which the pins 29 move, the radius point Part of lever.
-with it the end of l'ever 18.
handles of the door are preferably 011 a round a shoulder on the pushl rod for the spring to act against, 24 is a pivotal point in latch against which the' push rod acts, 3 is a tube passing through a bored hole and immovably fixed in the door, 6 is a tube revoluble in tube 3, 7 is a round spindle inside of tube 6 to which is fixed the outer knob 4 and the inner knob 5, 17 is a space cut out of the side of tube 3, 16 is a space cut out of inner tube 6,
into these spaces the end of lever 18 enters as with the movement of lever 18 by moving' lever 39. A/key, is shown, 12 with wards 13 designed to enter slit 11 in outer knob andv act on inner tube 3 which operates to lock or unlockthe movement of lever 18.
The operation of this mechanism is as foling the door the latch turns on the points 29 and the lower end swings inward allowing the latch to'move into the lock case. The
'spring 8 acts against lever 18 and against the latch between the pivotal Ypoints returning the latch toits normal positionboth for opening and closing. the door. The end of lever 18 bearing a ainst the end of latch" secures the latch so t at the door can not open until the lever is moved i to the position of the dotted lines, when pressure on the'l'atch will cause it to swing on points 29 and allow it to open. The lever 181s controlled by thesliding of the spindle 7, the notch 15 carrying The "knobs or spindle and can turn freely without having It is capable of turning or swinging any effect to open the door, the turning of the spindle being utilized for other purposes. To
lock the ndoor from the inside it is only necessary to turn the lever 39 which turns the tube .6, a lportion of which comes in contact with the e handle or knob of door lock does not directly @l act to move the latch, vbut releases the locking lever when pressure of the latch against the keeper forces the latch into the lock case turning on its ulper pivot.
ed my lnvention what I de- Having descri sire to claim and protect by Letters Patent 1s:
1. In a lock and latch mechanism, a latch having pivotal points at two of its extremities andheld in normal .position against both points, by a spring-substantially as shown. 2. In a lock and latchfmechanism, a latch having two pivotal points at its extremities,A
arranged` vto swing on eitherof the pivotal points, and mechanism to stop the swinging,
l substantially as shown.
'3. In a lock and. latchMmechanism fora vswinging door, a latch having. two pivotal points, thelatch swinging on one poi'nt to o pen the door, andl swinglng on the other point when the door is closing, substantially l opening, substantially as shown.
y 6. Ina lock and latch mechanism, a latch having Itwo-swinging movements on pivotal points at its extremities, a door knob or handle, and means for connecting the handle to the latch so as -to control its action, substantially as shown. ,l
l7. In a-lock and latch mechanism, a latch and lock having knobs or handles on a sliding spindle, a double acting swinging latch having two pivotal oints and means for connecting the spind e to the latch, substantially as shown.
8'. In a door lock and latch mechanism, a
latc'h having two plvotal points, a slidable spindle controlling the action of the latch, a stationary tube passing through the door through which .the slidable spindle moves,
substantially as shown.
9.',In a door lock and latch mechanism, a slidable s indle, an -inner tube surrounding the spind e in an outer tube that is fixed through the door, means for controlling the latch from the spindle and means for moving the inner tube so as to stop the movement ofthe spindle. Y
10. In a lock and latch mechanism, .a latch having two pivotal points, a spindle and means of controlling the movement of the latch by the spindle.
11. In a'lock and latch mechanism, a swinging latch, a sliding spindle arranged to `vo erate the latch,'a tube inc'losing the spind e, means for stopping the sliding of the spindle by rotating the tube.
1'2. In a lock and latch mechanism, a l
swinging latch, a sliding spindle arranged to operate the latch, a tube inclosing the spindle, means for stopping-the sliding of the spindle by rotating the tube and means for rotating the tube -by a key, substantially as shown. l
13. In a lock and latch mechanism, a sliding spindle for operating a latch, a rotatable tube inclosing the spindle, a fixed tube inclosing. the rotatable tube, a key adapted to enter the fixed vtube and move the rotatable tube. v y
