Description
WILLIAM H. ALLEN AND WILLIAM J. WEAVER, OF DETROIT,
MICHIGAN, ASSIGNORS TO DETROIT WHITE LEAD WORKS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION.
SUBSTANCE FOR REMOVING VARNISH OR IPAINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
\ Patented Jan. '7, 1908.
Application filed March 22. 1906- Serial No. 307380 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. ALLEN and WILLIAM J. WEAVER, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michi an, have invented a certain new and use 1 Improvement in Substances for Removing Varnish or Paint, and declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ertains to make and use the same.
his invention relates to a substance for removing varnish or paint from wood or iron surfaces. We find that for this purpose it is desirable to employ a fluid which is a solvent or partial solvent for a varnish or paint, which fluid has dissolved therein a substance which will crystallize as the fluid e vaporates.
.Thus the formation of the crystals acts to disrupt the coat of varnish or paint in such a manner that it is easily wiped or scra ed off. It is also desirable that the crysta lizable substance should formsepanate crystals, and
not a united mass.
To accom lish the above purpose, we take one quart 0 some ketone, suc as acetone, and one quart of-benzol and mixathe same together. In this mixture we dissolve two ounces of stearic acid (double pressed practically free from oleic acid) an of Vaseline. When the menstruumof this compound evaporates, the stearic acid will crystallize in separate crystals, the Vaseline reventin the crystals from uniting together to orm a solid mass. The compound will accomplish its purpose without the presence of Vaseline, but it will not do it as well. This compound will soften and dissolve the paint or varnish, and will carry the stearic acid and vaseline into the body of the varnish so that the crystals formed, as above described, will effectually loosen the coating of varnish or paint.
We claim:- A compound, consisting benzol, a crystalline fatty dissolved therein.
In testimony whereof, We sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
