MUSICLLEAF TURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7, 1908.
Application filed April 24:, 1907- Serial N0- 37010 18.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURA R. STANTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at 0011- bran in the county of Mesa and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements, in Music-Leaf. Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in music leaf turners, and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive device which may be placed upon the music rack of a piano, organ, or the like, for holding sheets of music in such manner as to permit them to be quickly and easily turned by the player.
The above and other objects are accomplished by the improved construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved music leaf holder and turner; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail section through one of the music leaf or sheet holders.
My improved music sheet holder and turner comprises a body or frame 1 construct ed preferably of wood and having a vertical back or upright 2, a forwardly projecting top 3 secured to the upper end of the back, and a forwardly projecting and horizontally extending base 4 secured to the bottom of the upright 2. This base 4- is of greater length than the width of the back so that when the device is placed upon the ordinary music rack of a piano or organ it will be effectively prevented. from tilting. Formed in the top 3 and base 4 are vertically alining, parallel grooves 5 which extend forwardly and rearwardly and are adapted to receive the ends of the pivot rods 6 of music leaf or sheet holders 7. The grooves 5 are not cut entirely through the parts 3, 4, and they are of suflicient size to permit the ends of the rods 6 to slide and rotate freely in them. Each of the holders 7 is of right angular form and. is preferably constructed by bending a strip of sheet metal upon itself into substantially U-form so as to provide a groove or channel 8 to receive the edge of a sheet or leaf of music M, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig, 1. The metal of which said holders are formed is preferably sufficiently resilient to clamp the inner vertical and bottom edges of the leaf to effectively retain it in the grooves or channels 8. The vertical portion 9 of each of the holders may be soldered to its pivot rod 6 or it may be bent around the same and riveted or other wise secured thereto as indicated in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the device is especially designed for holding a series of leaves or sheets of a piece of music so that the player or performer may quickly turn them. The holders 7 stiifen the leaves and effectively clamp them so that by grasping the outer ends of the horizontal portions of said holders they may be readily swung over from the right to the left hand side of the device, As they swing over their pivots move outwardly in the grooves 5 in the top 3 and base 4 so that the holders will lie flat upon each other in parallel relation, as will be readily understood upon reference to Fig. 1 in which the central holder 7 is shown thrown over to the left upon the left hand one and resting against the same.
While the present embodiment of the in- I vention is adapted for holding but three sheets or leaves it will be understood that it may be constructed to hold a greater or less number and that various other changes in the form, proportion and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is g j The herein described music leaf turner comprising the upright back 2, the forwardly and right angularly projecting top 3, the forwardly and right angularly projecting bottom 4, the latter having its ends projecting beyond the sides of the back 2 to provide a supporting base for the device, said top and bottom being formed. in their opposing faces with the vertically-alining, forwardly and rearwardly-extending, parallel grooves 5, the right angular music sheet holders 7 constructed of sheet metal bent upon itself In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LAURA R. STANTON.
