AUGUSTUS O. BOURN, OF BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND.
RUBBER SANDAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1907.
Application filed June 16,1906. Serial No. 322.0%.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUeUsTUs O. BOURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bristol, in the county of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rubber Sandals, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mens sandals and consists in providing the same with an internal rib, preferably formed by means of an embedded cord, extended upwards at the ends above the shank, as fully set forth hereinafter and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective viewof a mans sandal. embodying my improvement; Fig. 2 is a side view; and Fig. 3 a transverse section.
The sandal is of the usual form of mens sandals, with a sole portion A, the low vamp O and low quarter B. Within the vamp at the sides above the sole A is an inside rib a, the ends of which adjacent to the shank are curved as shown. As is well known it is desirable that the sandals for mens wear shall be of such a character that the foot may be fully introduced without the necessity of any manipulation, the sandal resting on the floor and the toe passing over the inner part of the sole until at the forward part of the sandal, when, by depressing the heel, the foot is fully introduced. With this class of sandals there is sometimes a tendency to slip from the foot, and where the goods are not of a superior quality they may be readily broken by strains, and to obviate these defects I provide the inside rib above described, which is at such a distance above the inner face of the sole that'it will catch above the sole of the shoe at the sides and tend to retain the sandal upon the foot, while by curving up the ends as shown I insure the introduction of the sole of the shoe below the rib in passing the foot into the sandal. While this rib may be made in any suitable manner, I prefer to form it by embedding a cord or strip of any suitable flexible but inelastic material in the vamp in such manner that it will cause a protruding rib at the inside. This cord or strip not only forms the rib but imparts strength to the article, and further any forward draft upon the toe portion of the sandal is communicated through the rib to the sides of the vamp above the shank and tendsto draw upon the latter and cause a closer adhesion to the foot.
While a rib within a sandal to retain the latter upon the foot is not new, no provision has been made in such structure for the ready introduction of the sole of the shoe below the rib of the sandal, and consequently the sole is apt to enter above the rib or to simply spread the sides of the sandal in introducing the shoe and the sandal will then drop readily from the shoe. By turning up the ends of the rib as shown the introduction of the edges of the sole below the rib in putting on the sandal is rendered certain and the spreading of the sandal and its detachment are thus prevented.
Without limiting myself to the precise arrangernent of ribs shown, I claim 1. A mans sandal having a low vamp and a low quarter and provided with an internal rib above the inner face of the sole and parallel therewith and curved upward at the ends above the shank at each side said curved portions being forward of the heel.
2. A mans sandal having a low vamp and low quarter and a flexible but inelastic strip embedded in the vamp above the sole and extending upward at the ends above the shank said curved portions being forward of the heel.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS O. BOURN.
