in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gun Hand-Protectors, of

which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention is designed to prevent any displacement of a hand protector upon the gun barrels, while at the same time it per mits said protector to be initially adjusted upon the gun to suit the peculiarities of its owner. I

The invention which is hereinafter described and claimed, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a bottom view of the protector and that part of the barrels of a double barreled gun with which it is to be used. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section of the same parts. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the protector dissociated from the gun. Fig. 4 is a front end view of the protector and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view in the plane of line 55 in Fig. 2.

The protector is composed of a body A made of spring metal bent longitudinally into approximately C-shape in cross section, whereby it may extend beneath both barrels B B and the intervenin rib b, and may extend partly around and embrace said barrels. This body is to be covered on outer surfaces with leather O or some other mate.- rial which is not a good conductor of heat.

Near its end the protector is provided with an inwardly bent spring latch a, which is preferably integral with the metal body and is formed by punching out atongue and bending it inward and then forward so that the end of said tongue will extend a little beyond the end of the protector. When the protector is embracing the gun barrels as shown, this tongue will engage the rib 1) between the gun barrels. There must, however, be a pin and hole connection between said latch tongue and said rib, so as to prevent any accidental movement of the protector lengthwise of the gun barrel. As shown, the hole a is in the latch tongue and the pin 0 is fixed to the rib b at such point as is required to hold the protector in the required osition upon the gun to suit the owners in ividual peculiarities.

By providing the described means for preventing the protector from moving lengthwise upon the gun barrel, the sole objection to hand protectors, generally, is removed. These protectors are to be grasped by the left hand of the shooter, and their position therefore determines the point upon the gun barrel at which he shall place his hand. When there is no means positively preventing the movement of a protector upon a gun barrel, such movement is likely to occur. When the protector has been moved and the shooter shoots the gun before he realizes this fact, or when he is required to shoot before he has time to re-adjust the protector, his aim will be disturbed and his shots are likely to be bad. Such misadventures are entirely prevented by the construction shown and hereinbefore described.

Having described my invention, I claim:

'1. A hand protector for double barreled guns comprising a covered spring metal body of substantially C-shape in cross section having near its end an inwardly extended and forwardly projecting spring latch which is in the plane of the rib between the gun barrels, and whose end extends beyond the end of the protector, there being a hole in said latch for engagement with a pin secured to said rib.

2. A hand protector for double barreled guns comprising a covered spring metal body of substantially C-shape in cross section, having near its .end and midway between its sides an integral tongue which is bent inward and then forward upon itself and extends -beyond the end of the body, said latch tongue having a hole for engagement with a pin secured to the rib between the two barrels of the gun.
