BED-PLATE FOR PRINTING MACHINERY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed August l, 1906. Serial No. 328,746.
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MAX RocnsTROH, director, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Klein-Sedlitz, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Plates for Printing l\/Iachinery, of which the following is a specilication.
The requirements o' printing, which are constantly growing more stringent, render it indispensable in printing machinery that vibrationsshould be reduced to the greatest possible extent.
The bedplate of printing presses has heretofore been composed of a large number oic separate parts; usually it has consisted oi a number oi' blocks upon which the rails were screwed down and of laterally arranged parts mounted upon the bedplate for the-reception of the cylinder bearings. Ihen very large sheets such as are now frequently employed in book printing are used, and the press runs at a very high speed, it often happens that through the inertia of the masses, especially that of the reciprocating carriage, there are set up in the press vibrations which when delicate pictures are to be printed, atleet the work injuriously, by causing the parts to become loose and to shift their positions and the 'fine screws of the autotypes to be worn I out prematurely, when larger editions are printed.
To render the press stable it is consequently necessary that the bedplate should consist of as few separateparts as possible and that the screwing together oi' separate pieces should be reduced to a minimum. For this purpose in a press in accordance with this invention, the bedplate together with the guides for the driving mechanism and the supports for the press stone and the printing cylinder, are formed in two parts only. The two halves of the bedplatetogether with the guides and with the cylinder bearings 'form the entire supporting framework. The two halves are screwed together and, by means of the spring wedges, rigidly connected with each other. As the pressure exerted can act only in a vertical direction from the printing cylinder bearings to the guides, it is impossible that the bedplate should ever change its position.
Figure l of the accompanying drawing is a side eleva ion of' a two-part bedplate in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same viewed in the di reci'ion of the arrow in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a plan thereof.
rIhe bedplaie uith the guides and the cylinder bearings consists, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, of `the tuo halves a which together with the bearing b of the cylinder and the guides c belonging thereto constitute the en tire bedplaie. The end of 'the driving mechanism of 'the carriage slides on the surfaces d. The spring v'edges e by means of which the tuo halves of he bedplale are rigidly secured togeher are shoa'n in Figs. l and 2.
Having now' particularly described and as certained the nature of my said invenrion and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
l. In a priniing press, a frame composed of tuo side secions having standards forming bearings for a cylinder, said sections also forming a bed plae, guide ribs arranged longitudinally of the bed plate, said sections provided n ith grooves forming carriage slide, means for connect-ing the sections, and wedge members for securely holding the seciions togelher.
2. In a printing press involving a frame, tv, o sections forming a ribbed bed plate, each of said sections having standards forming bearings 'for a priniing press cylinder, said seci ions having guide-nays forming carriage slides, each of said secr ions being formed in a single piece, means 'for `ioinirig `lthe sections to each other, and r-'edges interposed betr. een the sections to rigidly hold the lati er in proper posi` ion with respect to each other.
Y, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAX ROCKSTRGH.
