FIG. 5.
WITNESSES:
INVENTOR WILLIAM NITED Sm'rns PATENT OFFICE.
KLOCKE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO E. W. BLISS COMPANY, OF
'BROOKLYN', NEWYORK, A CORPORATIOL OF WEST VIRGINIA.
PRESS.
To all whom it may concern:
l 3 e it knownthat I,*VILLIAM KLOCKE, a citizen of the United States, -residing in the sisting of two members between which the edge of the sheet to be drawn is clamped, and 111 some styles of press the upper member 0f the blank-holder is movable, in other styles the lower, and in still other styles both mem= bers. This invention provides a very convenient means for applying to the operation of a movable member of a blank-holder the move ment of the plunger which eifeets .the drawing operation. In such machines it has been previously customary to provide separate hydraulic mechanism for operating the blank-holder, but" by the introduction of this invention such separate hydraulic mechanism is entirely eliminated, and agreat saving in initial cost and in expense of maintenance is provided.
Other features of improvement are referred to in detail hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an embodiment of the mvention;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are face elevations showing the successive positions of.the parts,
and'sho'wing the work in section. Fig. 5=is a section on-the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a half elevation and half section of the same.
R-eferrin now to the embodiment of the invention ustrated, the blank-holder comprises a fixed lower member A and a mov-' able upper member B. The movable member of the blank-holder, or, as it is generally called, the blank-holder, B, is mounted upon a slide 0 which travels between the four u rights D constituting the main frame of t e machine. The drawing punch E is mounted on a slide F working within the slide G and supported by rods G 'G from a cross-head H which is mounted upon the lower end of I Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 1, 1903. serial n5. 424,631.
Patented July 20, 1909.
the plunger J of the ram the latter being fixed=in"the head' L of the-machine tram'e,-and thecross-head-H being properly guidedin the side frames-D of the machine.
The cross-head I-I :is oonnected at opposite ends with rods M which at their-upper'ehds are connectedwith plungers N in supplementary cylinders 0.: There are two of these cylinders,-oneat each side ofthe machine, and liquid underpressure is constantly-fin communicatiolr with the 'lower part-of eacli cylinder so as to exert an upward eifect upon the cross-head and punchyoounterbalancing them. There is no valve mechanism nor any..-
thing except a counterbalancing effect in these cylinders. =The maincyl inder or ram K may be: provided wi-th any :usual or suitableconnections ton-pressing :down the plunger, the release of the pressure serving to permitthe'lifting of the plunger and congected'parts by'tlie counterbalancing cyliners.
Hydraulic mechanism is practically essential in machines-designed for this class of work requiringa-cOmparativel long and uniform movement, and such machines are of great height (the present machine-being more than 30-=Ieet high). To convert the continuous. long movement ofthe main plunger into a movement ofa blank-holder at a gradually decreasing speed until the blank is perfectly clampedylandto hold the-blankholder in this position while the punch draws the metal to the shape desired by the operation of the samemain plunger, this invention pro- .vides a very simple and effective mechanism.
In the exampleshown the desired movement is effected through toggle links I? and Q, eaclrofwhich is eperatedby means of'a link R :tastenedto the cross-head I-I- =which travels up and down with the plunger J. In the highest position of the plunger (Fig. 4) the links R stand approximately. in line with the links P, and the downward movement-of the plunger is transmitted through the links P to the slide C carrying the blank-holderat a comparatively rapid rate. :Asthelinks- P and Q approach a position in line with each other. 3) the movement becomes more gradual and finally ceases, with the pressure at. a maximum, and the strain transmitted in a substantially straight line through the pins the further movement of-the plunger efi'ects simply a drawing movement of the punch E at the regular rate of speed desired.
In order to be able to remove the work from the machine the punch must start from a point well above the bed of the machine, and the initial movement of the punch to cover this distance is availed of according to this invention for the purpose of clamping the work in place. The work V (Fig. 2) is finished in an upright position and is raised to approximately the level of the fixed bedA by means of a knock-out plate W which is supported from a cross-beam X, preferably lying in a pit below the floor level, and which is connected by rods Y with-the ends of the slide G which lies bet-ween the side frames D of the machine at the opposite sides of the machine. Thus on the return movement the punch is first withdrawn from the work and then the movable blank-holder is raised and with it the knock-out plate and the work.
I prefer to provide an adjustable connection of the slide C with the toggle links P, and for this purpose eachof the pins S at the lower ends of the toggle links is mounted in a block Z which is adjustably fastened to the slide C by a mechanism illustrated in section in Fig. 5. The block Z is fastened down into the slide by means of bolts (1 and rests upon the inclined top of a wedge b, the bolts a passing through suitable slots in said wedge; and said wedge carries rotatably in its end a screw. 0 which screws through a nut d fastened against the face of the main slide C, said screw 0 being provided with a capstan head 6. By loosening the holding-down bolts a and screwing up the adjusting screw 0, the pin S may be lifted, or, by the opposite operation, may be lowered, at will. The nut d is split, and is clamped by means of a screw f to hold the adjusting screw 0 firmly. The broad idea of using a single ram to operate the punch and also the blank holder is not claimed in the present application, being covered by my prior application No. 389,574, filed August 21, 1907.
What I claim 1s:
1. A drawing press including a punch and a movable member of a blank-holder, both adapted to move in the same direction in drawing an article, and a single ram operating said punch and said movable member.

3. A drawing'press including a punch and a movable member of a blank-holder, a ram for operating said punch, and transmitting mechanism for communicating a part of the movement of said ram to said movable member, said ram and transmitting mechanism being both on the same side of the work.
actuating said punch, toggle mechanismactuated by the first part of the movement of said ram and actuating said movable member of the blank-holder, and an ejector below the work and connected with said movable member to lift the drawn article as said movable member rises.
6. A drawing press including in combination a punch and a movable member of a blank holder, a ram having a plunger J actuating said punch, a pair of toggle lin s P and Q connected to said movable member and to a fixed point respectively and also connected to each other, and an operating link R connected to said ram and to said toggles to operate the latter.
7. A drawing press including in combination a punch and a movable member of a' blank holder, a ram having a plunger J actuating said punch, a pair of toggle links P and Q connected to said movable member and to a fixed point respectively and also connected to each other, and an operating link R connected to said ram and to said toggles to operate the latter, the first part of the movement of said "ram serving to move said'toggle links from a bent to a straight position, and the continued movement of the ram serving to move its point of connection with said operating link R without material movement of the toggle links.
8. A press including in combination a movable member C, a link P through which movement is transmitted thereto, a block Z to which an end of said link is pivoted, and means for adjustably attaching said block Z to said member C. t
9. A press includin in combination a movable member C, a llnk P through which movement is transmittedthereto, a block Z to which an end of said link is pivoted, and' .means for adjustably attaching said block Z to said member C, said means including bolts a, a wedge b and a screw 0, whereby said wedge may beshifted under the block Z to lift the latter to the limit allowed by the bolts a.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM KLOCKE. Vitnesses: DOMINGO A. USINA, THEODORE T. SNELL.
