FLANGlNG-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,40 6, dated July 1, 1902.
Application filed March 24, 1902. Serial No. 99,647. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that 1, WILLIAM J. HAGMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Philadelphia county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flanging-Presses,of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in flanging-presses of that common class for boiler-work and the like in whichthe work is operated upon by a fianging-tool operated by a pressure-cylinder supported by the headplate of the press.
The present invention will be readily underplate of a fianging-press,designed,as usual, to
be supported over the base-plate of the press by means of suitable vertical stretchers or columns; 2, a large opening through the headplate under the position of the actuating-cylinder; 3, the actuating-cylinder, of usual hydraulic type, vertically disposed over the opening 2 in the head-plate; at, stretchers by means of which the cylinder is rigidly secured to the head-plate; 5, vertical guideways formed in opposite side walls of opening 2in the head-plate; 6, the ram of the cylinder; 7, a cross-head at the lower end of the ram and extending from one to the other of the guideways 8 in the opening of the head-plate, this cross-head having a flat lower surface; 8, guide-lugs upon the cross-head engaging with the guideways 5 in the head-plate, this guiding arrangement preventing angular motion of the cross-head and rain and steadying the free end of the ram in its reciprocations; 9, a pair of drawback-cylinders disposed vertical one at each side of the main cylinder;
10, the piston-rods of the drawback-cylinders, the same extending downwardly from their cylinders and being attached to the crosshead 7 at opposite sides of the ram; 11, a pair of T-slots disposed parallel with each other in the lower face of cross -head 7; 12, the flanging-tool or its holder; 13, a flange on the upper end of the fianging-tool, seating against the lower face of the cross-head, and 14 bolts engaging this flange and the slots 11 of the cross-head and serving to fix the flanging-tool to the cross-head and permit of the flanging-tool being shifted to various positions relative to the axis of the ram.
For specially heavy Work or,for work permitting of such position the fianging-tool is adjusted upon the cross-head so as to occupy a position in vertical line with the rain, and the machine is then employed as usual. the conditions of the work require a change in the position of the fianging-tool relative to the other parts of the press, then the flanging-tool is shifted upon the cross-head and resecured in a position eccentric to the ram. In the exemplitication the opening 2 in the head-plate is shown as rectangular, the cross head of corresponding shape, and a single pair of slots 11 is shown; but this particular form for the opening and cross-head is not essential, nor is it essentialthat-the shifting motion ofthe fianging-tool upon the cross head be limited by a single pairof slots or to a single line of adjustingmotion.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a flangingpress, the combination, substantially as set forth, of a head-plate provided with an openingthrough it, an actuating-cylinder fixedly secured over said opening, a rain projecting from the cylinder into the opening, a cross-head disposed at the lower end of the ram and reciprocating within said opening, and a flanging-tool secured within said opening to the lower face of the cross-head and arranged for horizontal adjustment thereon.
2. In a Hanging-press, the .c 01nbination, substantially as set forth, of a head-plate provided with an opening through it having guideways supported by its walls, an actuating-cylinder fixedly secured over said opening, a ram projecting from the cylinder into Where,
the ram provided with a pair of parallel T- slots in its face, a hanging-tool provided with a flange at its end to seat against the crosshead, and'bolts engaging said flange and T- slots.
WILLIAM J. HAGMAN.
