exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figuresof reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fare registers for registering and indicating fare collections in street cars and other public conveyances, and comprises means for registering two different denominations of fares in duplicate, and means for indicating the fare of each duplicate set of registers or wheels; also means for taking impressions or printed'statements from two of said registers or sets of wheels at a time showing the number of fares registered on each duplicate register, that is to say, the statement will show the number of fares registered on each of the duplicate registers, for example, if the machine is'adapted to register in duplicate iive cent fares and three cent fares, the statement taken will indicate the number of each of such fares registered by showing the impression from one set of registers or wheels of each of the duplicates.
'lach duplicate set of registers or wheels is simultaneously operated upon the registration of the fare belonging to such duplicate sets, and indicated on the indicator of such duplicate sets. Each statement taken is identified with the conductor taking the same by means of a printing device bearing an identification mark, and may also be i signed by the conductor when turning such statement in with the fares received for the period during which he had charge of the car. The conductors identification printing device may be single or in duplicate; if a single device is employed, the printed record will be made on one copy only of the record. The statement also shows the dates and the numbers of the trips, the number ofthe register, and the fare denominations, in dupli cate. In some cases it may be necessary to show the date or the numbers of the trips, or the number of the register, or the fare detures singly or on one statement, in which case single means only for printing such data is employed. The present invention relates to the type of fare register shown and de scribed in many of my former patents, for example, No. 646,757, of April 3, 1900, and No. 694,322, of February 25, 1902; also in my pending application Serial No. 318,994, which discloses means for registering and in. dicating a single denomination of fares in duplicate, and means for taking the impressions in duplicate from said wheels. The

It will be readily seen that three or more shafts may be emloyed in the same manner, thereby increasmg the scope of the register, in which casea correspondlng number of fare counters in duplicate, a corresponding number of indicators and operating members may be added.

Projecting from the rearward side of each of said operating members 12 is a lug 21 which extends through a slot 22 in the rear ofthe casing 1 to be engaged by the operating means (not ''shown.) Each of the ratchet wheels 16 and 17 is fixed to a toothed wheel 23 having ten teeth, and a wheel 24 having a single tooth; the ten toothed wheel imparts a uniform movement to the unit printing counter 25 of one of the sets of counters of each duplicate, and the single toothed wheel imparts movement to the tens printing counter 26 of one of the sets of each duplicate. The transfer wheels 27 and 28 are loose upon the respective shafts 14 and 15 and through these transferwheels the hundreds and thousands printing counters 29 and 30 are actuated in a well known manner, the transfer wheel 27 having ten teeth and the transfer wheel 28 having one tooth.
It will be understood that the primary actuating wheel 23 of each duplicate set of counters, is fixed to its respective shaft 14 or 15, and that in the operations of one set cr counters through the ratchet wheels 16 or 17, and a pawl 18, the duplicate set of counters correspondin thereto is also actuated. For example, loo ing at Fig. l of the drawings, the two outer counters 1010 are employed to register in duplicate the three cent fare; when the individual wheels of the counter to the right, (which is the counter that is actu ated directly through the ratchet devices from the operative member 12,) the corresponding individual wheels of the duplicate counter 10 to the left, are simultaneously operated, and the same is true of the two inner duplicate sets of counters 1111 which are associated with the five. cent fare.
Arranged upon the shaft 31 of the duplicate sets of printing counters'are duplicate printing devices as follows: 3232 designate duplicate identification printing devices which identify with each printed statement, the conductor or other person who may be anthorized to take such printed statement or statements these printing devices may be in the form of removable keys 32.
Referring to the records or statements Figs. 33' of the drawings, 0". are the impressions taken from this or these duplicate identification. devices. 33 designates duplicate fare denomination printing devices which print upon the duplicate statements the denominations of the fares registered and which appear upon the printed records Figs. 3 and 3 as 3 and 5. The duplicate month and date printing devices consist of wheels 3535 which are set daily to their printing positions from hand'wheels 36 and 37 which are fixed to telescopic shafts'38 which have beari s in aside of the casing and on. one end 0 the shaft 14; the tele- 37 are geared directly to one of the duplicate sets of month and date rinting wheels 35 and are also connected with the other duplicate month and date printing wheels at the opposite side of the machine by means of shafts 39 and 40 and gear wheels 41, so that in turning the date hand wheels 36 and 37, the duplicate month and date printing 'wheels 35 are all set to their printing positions which takes place at the beginning of the day. 42 designates duplicate printing devices to-print the number of the register which is indicated by 17 on the statements Figs- 3 and 3.
The date printing wheels 35 are utilized to print the numbers of the trips after the impression of the date has been taken, for example, in beginning the daily operations of the register, an impression is taken of the month and date, as indicated on the record sheets Oct. 13, the date printing wheel is then turned at the end of each trip to indicate the numbers of the trips from one up as indicated on said statements or records. These records or statements as appear in'the drawvscopic shafts 38 of these hand wheels 36 and ings, show two separate statements, each one of which contains impressions of the printing wheels which indicate the fares registered on the 3 cent bank of wheels and those registered on the 5 cent bank of wheels, one statement being taken from one of the banks of wheels of each fare denomination and the other statement being taken from the other bank of wheels, one of which is a duplicate counter of the 5 cent fare and the other of which is a duplicate counter of the 3 cent fare.
The printing devices are the same as those shown and described in my former patents hereinbefore referred to and consist of rolls of paper 43, a pressure pad 44 which is raised to press the pa er against the printing de vices and whee s, and an actuating bar 45.
which raises said pressure pad 44 against said printing devices and wheels; this actu ating bar 45 is operated in the well known man ner by the insertion of a key at one sideof the machine which engages an end of the bar and which when turned, actuates said bar, said key is shown at Fig. 5 in connection with end of a bar; The printing devices and wheels are inked by an inking roller 46 and the paper is fed into the compartments 6 and 7 through guide rollers 47.
The passenger indicators or counters 13 hereinbefore referred to are simultaneously operated to make a total count of the fares or to count the number of passengers for each trip. Extending across the machine is a transverse oscillating bar 48 which is lifted.
by either of the operating members 12, saidoperating members also lifting the fare indicators 4 by the forwardly-projecting ends of said members 12 engaging a rearward projection 4 on each of said fare indicators. The transverse oscillating bar 48 is connected by a link 49 to an oscillating arm 50 which is loose upon the shaft 51 of the passenger indicator wheels 13; there are two of these arms 50 one on each side of the wheels 13 and extending across from one to the other of said arms is a-ilash or shield 52 which lowers in the front of the wheelseach time a fare is registered on said wheels 13 and raises to the position shown in Fig. 2 when the registration is completed. The arms 50 are connected by a rod 53 to one end of which the link 49 is pivoted, and an additional rod 54 is mounted in said arms 50; this rod 54 carries three pawls 55 which drop into the ratchet wheel 56 of each of the indicators or counting wheels 13. It will therefore be seen that upon each elevation of an operating member 12, a fare is registered on duplicate sets of counters, the fare indicator belonging to such fare counters is elevated to an exposed position, the transverse oscillating bar 48 is elevated to impart movements to the passenger indicator wheels 13 at the top of the machine.
The passenger indicators or counters 13 are set to zero in a well known manner through the instrumentality of an exterior hand wheel 56 which operates gear wheels 57 and 58 the latter being on the shaft of the wheels 13.
I claim:
1. In a fare register, four sets of counters mounted upon a common axis of rotation, two reciprocating members, each one of which is adapted to simultaneously actuate two of said counters, and means for taking impressions from said counters.
2. In a fare register, four sets ofcounters mounted upon a common axis of rotation, two reciprocating members each one of which is adapted to simultaneously actuate two of said counters, and an indicator associated with each two of said counters to indiv cate' the fares registered thereon. 3. In a fare register, four sets of printing counters mounted upon a common axis of rotation, two reciprocating members each one of which is adapted to actuate two of said counters in a single operation thereof, an indicator associated with each two of said counters, a printing device designating the class of fare registered on each two of said counters, and'means for taking impressions or statements from each two of said counters and'from the printing device.
4, In a fare register, four sets of printing counters mounted upon a common axis of rotation, two reciprocating members each one of which is adapted to impart simultaneous movement to two of the printing counters, a-
printing device associated with each set of counters so movable in unison to indicate in duplicate the class of fare registered thereon, a printing device to indicate the conductor, and means for taking statements from each two of said counters so actuated in unison'and from said printing devices to show the duplicate registrations of fares, the class of fare so registered, and an-identification of theconductor.
5. In a fare register, four sets of printing counters mounted upon a common axis of rotation, two reciprocating members each one of which is adapted to impart simultaneous movement to two of said counters, a printing device for printing in duplicate the fares of each two of said counters so operated in unison, a total counter for counting the totals of the fares registered on all of said counters,
and means for taking statements from each two of said counters and from the printing device associated therewith.
6. In a fare register, four sets of printing counters mounted upon a common axis of rotation, two reciprocating members each one of which is adapted to impart simultaneous movement to two of said counters, a rinting dei ice for printing in duplicate the are registered on each two of said counters so movable in unison, a printing device for printing we dates upon the statements taken from said counters and said fare denomination printing device, and means for taking such statements.
7. In a fare register, an inclosing case having two separate record compartments, four sets of printing counters mounted upon a common axis of rotation and adapted to register in duplicate two denominations of fares, a single reciprocating member adapted to actuate two of said counters simultaneously, fare denomination printing devices for printing or impressing in duplicate the fares registered upon each set of duplicate counters, printing or impression devices for taking duplicate statements from the counters for each specific fare, and from the fare denomination printing devices, means for feeding said duplicate statements into said separate compartments in the casing, and a fare indicator associated with each two sets of said counters.
8. In a fare register, four sets of printing counters mounted upon a common axis of rotation, an individual actuating member adapted to operate two of said counters simultaneously, an indicating counter to count the totals of the fares registered on both sets of duplicate counters, and means for taking impressions or prints in duplicate from said counters.
9. In a fare register, a plurality of printing counters mounted upon a common axis for registering in duplicate two classes of fares, a fare-denonnnation printing device for printing in duplicate the class of fares, an identifi cation printing device for printing in duplicate a mark identifying the person or persons taking such statements therewith, date-printing devices or printing in duplicate the dates of such statements, and means for taking duplicate statements from said counters and printing devices.
10. In a fare register, four groups of printing counters mounted upon a common axis of rotation, a single reciprocating member adapted to impart simultaneous movement to each two of said counters upon which the same fare is registered, an indicator associated with each two of said counters to exhibit the fare denomination thereof, said indicator being actuated by the single-actuating member of said two sets of counters and simultaneously with the operation of said counters.
11. In a fare register, four groups of printing counters mounted upon acommon axis of rotation, a single-reciprocating member associated with each two of said counters upon which are registered the same denomination of fare and adapted to simultaneously actuate both of said counters, an indicator associated with each two of said counters to exhibit the fares registered thereon, said indicator being actuated by the single reciprocating member through which the counters are actuated and simultaneously with the op} eration of said counters, a fare-denomination prmtln devlce to designate in duplicate the class 0 fares so registered on each two of said counters and so indicated, and a printing device to designate the person taking the statements or impressions from said counters and said printing devices.
12. In a fare register, four sets of printing countersmounted u on a common axis of rotation, each two 0 said counters registering the same denomination of fare, an individual reciprocating member associated with each two of said counters and adapted to impart simultaneous movement thereto, a printing device designatingthe number'of the trip, and means for taking impressions or statements from each two of the printing counters and from the printing device showing in duplicate the number of fares registered thereon, and the trip .on which such registrations were made.
13. The combination of four sets of printing counters mounted upon a common axis for registering in duplicate two denominations of fares with an indicator for each fare, and means for taking impressions or statements in duplicate from said printing counters.
14. In a fare register, a plurality of printingcounters mounted upon a common axis and upon which are registered in duplicate two denominations of fares, a conductors identification printing device in duplicate,
and means for taking duplicate statements from said rinting counters and the conductors identification printing device.
15. In a fare reglster, a plurality of printing counters mounted upon a common axis and upon which are registered in duplicate two denominations of fares, a fare denomination printing device, and means for taking duplicate statements from said printing counters showing the fare denomination on either one of the two duplicate statements.
16. In a fare register, a plurality of printing counters mounted upon a common axis and upon which are registered in duplicate two denominations of fares, a conductors identification printing device, and meansfor takingduplicate statements from said prmting counters, and a statement from the conductors printing device on either one of the duplicate statements.
17. In combination with a fare register having a plurality of printing counters for registering in duplicate twodenominations of fares, said counters being mounted upon a common axis, a total counter for counting the totals of the two denominations of fares, and means for taking duplicate statements or impressions from said duplicate counters.
18. In combination with a fare register having a plurality of printing counters for Z registering in duplicate two denominations of fares, said counters being mounted upon a commonv axis, afare denomination printing of fares, said counters being mounted upon a common axis, an indicator for each fare, a total counter for counting the totals of the "two denominations of fares, and means for taking duplicate statements or impressions l'ares', du hcate printing devices for printing from said duplicate counters.
20. In combination with four sets of printing counters mounted upon a common axis for registering in duplicate two denomina- -tions of fares a datin r1nt1n device for printmg 1n duplicate the dates, and means for taking impressions or statements from said printing counters and date printing devices.
21. In combination with the plurality of printing counters mounted upon a common axis for registering in duplicate two denominations of fares, a trip printing device showing the number of the trip, and means for taking duplicate impressions or statements from said printing counters, and a single statement from the trip printing device.
22. The combination in a fare register having a plurality of printing counters for registering in duplicate two denominations of fares, said counters being mounted upon a common axis, a trip denomination printing device for printing in duplicate the trip num bers, and means for taking duplicate impressions or statements from said printing counters and trip printing device.
23. In a fare register having two separate record compartments, a plurality of printing counters for registering in duplicate two denominations of fares, said counters being mounted upon a common axis, a fare indicator for each denomination of fare, printing or impression devices for taking duplicate statements from said printing counters,
1 means for feeding said duplicate statements into the said separate compartments.
24. In a fare register having two separate record compartments, four sets of printing counters for registering in duplicate two denominations of fares, said counters being mounted upon a common axis, printing or impression devices for taking duplicate l statements from said counters, and means for feeding one copy of said duplicate statements into each of said separate compartl ment's.
I 25. In a fare register, a plurality of print ing counters mounted upon a common axis for registering in duplicate two classes of fares, a single operating member for imparting movement to the counters of each duplicate.

In a fare register, a plurality of counters mounted upon a common axis for registering in duplicate two denominations of fares, a' printing device for fixing the number oridentity to the register, and means for taking statements or impressions from said counters and said register ldentification printing device.
27. In a fare register, a plurality of counters mounted upon a common axis for registering in duplicate two denominations of tering in duplicate two or more denominations, an indicator for each fare, and means for taking impressions or statements in duplicate from said printing counters.
