Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented m 7, 1968.
Application as May as, race. Serial No. erases.
To all whom it may concern:
Belt known that I, J OHN F. OHMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton,
in the county of Montgomery and State of 'sg Ohio, have invented certain new and useful exact description or the invention, such Improvements in Fare-Registers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and as Willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in iare registers and comprises a single fare, register, or a register adapted to take care of a single denomination of fare in duplicate; to indicate'such' fare by means of a permanent indicator; to furnish separate records from the duplicate printing; counters, and to record and indicate the total fares or passengers upon a separate bank of counters which are,
actuated simultaneously with each operation of the duplicate printing counters. One of the records is taken by the conductor 01 conductors operating the registerfor a definite period or periods, and the conductors alone have access to this record; the other record is taken by the cashier, inspector or other authorized person, and suchperson alone has access to such record The record taken by the cashier or inspector may cover a period of a'd ay or a longer period, and it will show the work of the diiierent conductors operating the register from the time the last record was takenand removed by the cashier or inspector, These two records, to-wit.tl'1e conductors record and the cashier or.inspectors rec- 0rd are duplicates and are delivered into separate compartments. I
in addition to the means for registering the Earescollected in duplicate, and for taking in duplicate, printed records of such fares,
means are provided for showing upon such duplicate records other miscellaneous data, such for example, as the month and the day, the number of the register, the number of fares collected by each conductor and the denomination of the fare.
In the drawings-I have shown one of the statements as hearing theconductors identification mark, and the otherstatement tc-witthe. conductors statement, ascontaining his 5 5 signature and by which 1s identified;
in duplicate, and
it l i be readily seen, however, that both statements may contain an impression of the conductors identification mark by duplicating the conductors identification key, and pro-- viding a suitable opening for it.
The present invention relates to the type of fare register shown and described in United States Letters Patent No.' 646,757 granted to myself April- 3rd, 1900, and United States Letters Patent No. 694,322 granted to myself and others jointly with me, February 25, 1902. Registers of the type disclosed the above-mentioned patents provide means for registering a multiplicity of different denominations of'fares, and for taking printed records showing a classification of the different denominations of fares collected, with other miscellaneous data, such for example, as the conductors identification mark, the number of the register, the -months and the days thereof, and the trip numbers.
The present invention differs from the above results to this extent, that a nomination of fare is recorded in duplicate and duplicate records are taken from the counters, such records being intended for different authorized persons, to-witthe conductor or conductors collecting the fares, and
the cashier or inspector. The duplicate records also show the number of fares collected the denomination of the fares. v
The present invention also comprises means for separating and inclosing in separate compartments the duplicate records,- oneof such compartments being designed to receive the conductors record and to which he alone has access, and-the other compartment being designed to receive the cashier or inspectors record, and to which the cashier or inspector alone has access.
The invention further comprises means for simultaneously actuating the duplicate counters from a single operating device, such operating device also servingto simultaneously actuate a corresponding set of counters which are otherwise known as trip or passenger counter wheels.
The identifying means associated with the register record are fully described and shown in Letters Patent No; 694,322 hereinbefore referred to, and the means for identifying such records with the dates and other matter are .more' particularly shown and described in Letters Patent No. 646,7 57 hereinbeforesingle dereferred to it will therefore, not be necessary to make more than an incidental mention of these features in connection with their embodiment in the present invention which contemplates the provision of means whereby one or more conductors are enabled to take their individual records from the register, the same to be turned over vto the cashier with the fares collected, and with the knowledge that a duplicate of such record remains in the register, and that such duplicate record may thereafter be checked or audited against the several conductors records previously taken and removed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a perspective view of a one fare register constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, is a front elevation of the same with the casing shown in section. Fig. 3, is a sectional side elevation on the line acm of Fig. 2. In a detail description of the invention, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
The casing '1 is of suitable design and size to accommodate the capacity. of the machine or register,-which 1S fora single fare,
such for example, as ,five cent cash fares.
Thefront face of the casing'has-anupper sight opening "2 through .which'is visible the numbers. appearing on the trip or passenger indicator wheels to be againreferred, to. '3 And another. sight opening. 3', through which the permanent fare'i'ndicator 3 isvisible,
6 and. 7,.the latter being adapted to contain" one of the duplicate records such as is shown in Figs. 7 or 8, and the other compartment being adapted to contain the other duplicate record. Access is o .)taified to these compartmentsthrough doors ,4. and 5 which are secured by means of suitable locks 4 .and 5".
The primary -actuating ratchet wheel .11- is fast upon shaft 8 having suitable bearings in the framework. Engaging this ratchet wheel 11 is a single ratchet pawl 14 carried upon a supporting arm 12 which is loosely mounted upon the shaft 8 adjacent to said ratchet wheel. Engaging the pawl support 12 to raise and lower it and herewith the pawl '14, is a single actuating member 13 having projections 13 between which the .free end of the pawl support 12 is projected.
Projecting from the rearward side of the. actuating member 13 is a lug 13", said. lug projecting through a slot l in the rear side of the irlclosing case. This lug or projection 13 is engaged by the operating means (not shown) and through which'said actuating member 13 is lifted to impart movement to the ratchet wheel 11 and shaft 8 through the pawl. 14. Theratchet wheel 11 has fixed 'to one side thereof a ten toothed wheel 16 and a single toothed wheel 22; the ten' toothed wheel imparts movement to the unit printing counter 23, and the single toothed wheel 22 transfers to the tens printingc ounter 2 1. The transfer wheels 29 and 30 are loose on the shaft 8 and through these wheels 29 and 30 the hundreds and thousuch printing counters which are identically the same in every particular withthe exeeption of. the .ratchet wheel 11 through which the shaft 8 is actuated by the pawl 14.-
The actuatingften toothed wheel 16 of the duplicate counters-is fast upon, the shaft 8 and imparts movement to the duplicateunit- .'wheel 23%". {Attached to-said wheel 16 is a single toothed wheel" 22 which imparts movement. to the tens pri'ntir ig counter'24 'Thehun'dreds and thousands printing counters 25* and 26 are, actuatedthrough the transfer-wheels 30 'and 29 which are loose up'on the shaft SV 78'and 78 designate de vices for printing the register number upon the duplicate records, the mark being indicated on the records by 17 these devices are fast on shaft 9.
' Interposed between the duplicate printing counters upon shaft 9 are duplicate printing wheels 10 and 10" which are united by means ofa sleeve 15. The peripheries of these printing wheels are provided with printing characters indicating the denomination of farewhich is registeredupon the du- H plicat'e printing counters, for example, cash upon theprinted record or records that the fares counted upon the printing counters are of that denomination. These fare denomination printing wheels 10 and 10 do not retate but are made stationary by being attached by means of a screw 17 to a web 13 whichextends between collars 19 and 19 which loosely surround the respective shafts 8 and 9. The printing wheel 10 has a series of openings 20-.see Fig. 5, through any one of which the screw. 1.7 is projected in securing said printing wheels 10 and 10 to the web 13. It will be seen that a single set of these fare-denomination printing wheels 10 and iO may be associated with a set of duplicate counters upon which are registered any other denomination of fares, for example, if the register is utilized for registering any particular denomination of fare, these printing wheels 10 and 10 are adjusted to positions to print such denomination of fare and are then made secure in such position by the screw 17. As the register is now shown, the
duplicate printing counters are utilized .to'
register and print cash fares; should it become desirable to utilize said counters to register and print any other specific denomination of fares, for example, tickets, the printing wheels 10 and 10 may be adjusted to the positions to bring the printing characters indicating tickets into printing alinement with the printing counters, and then be made secure in such position by means of the screw 17 penetrating the necessary opening 20 in wheel 10.
As thus far described, it will be seen that upon a single shaft there are mounted duplicate printing counters adapted to register and print a specific denomination of fare-towit-cash fares, and associated with said printing counters are duplicate fare-denomh,
nation printing wheels 10 and 10. There are also mounted upon the same shaft duplicate dale printing wheels consisting cf month wheels 21 and 21 andcday wheels 27 and 27. These date-wheels are loose upon the shaft 9 and are actuated to printing positions, at the beginning of each days work by the following means: 28 and 28 are finger wheels exposed on the outer side of the casing and bearing on their peripheries the 31 is a stationary ointer lying across the peripheries of sai wheels and serving to indicate the p'ositions of the wheels in setting the same to the deslredkdate;
v21 and 27.
these wheels have telescopic shafts 32 and 33. The inner shaft 33 is connected with the month wheel 28 and is in alinement with the shaft 3 but has no connection therewith, and likewise the outer telescopic shaft 32 has no connection with the shaft 8, said shaft 32 being connected with the date wheel 28. The inner shaft 33 is connected with the month wheel 28 and carries upon its inner end a spur wheel 34 which engages a spur Wheel 35 fixed to the month printing wheel 21;. the outer telescopic shaft 32 of the month wheel 23 has upon its inner end spur wheei 36 which engages a spur wheel 37 fixed to the date printing wheel. 27.
I have thus described the means for actuating one set of date printing wheels and wi ll next describe the means for actuating the duplicate set of date printing wheels 21 and 27 which lie at the other extreme end of the printing wheel shaft 9.
38 and 39 are spur wheels loose upon shaft 8 and meshing with spur wheels 40 and d1 of the duplicate set of date printing wheels Engaging the spur wheel 38 is a smaller spur wheel 42 on shaft 43 and en-v gaging the spur wheel 39 is a smaller spur wheel 44 011 shaft 45, said wheels 42 and l4- being fast upon "their respective shafts 43 and 45. These shafts 43 and 45 are mounted parallel to each other and parallel to the shafts 8 and 9 in suitable hearings in the frame and are geared to the date finger wheels'28 and 28 through spur wheels 46 and 17, the former being fixed. to the shaft .45v and the latter being fixed to the' shaft 43.
The spur wheel 46 is engaged by the spur wheel 34 which as before stated, actuates the printing month wheel 21 directly. When the finger wheel 28 is rotated, the duplicate month printing wheels 21 and 21 are simultaneously actuated through the spur wheels 34.-35-46 44 and 39. Spur wheel 47 on shaft 43 engages spur wheel 36 on the inner end of the telescopic shaft 33 which as before stated, is connected to the date finger wheel 237 As before stated, spur wheel 36 is also geared tospur wheel 37 of the date printing wheel 27, so that when the finger wheel 28 isrotated to set the duplicate date printing wheels 27 and 27 in the desired printing positions, the said date printing wheels are siinultaneously rotatedfrom the wheel 36 40 respectively.
48' is a conductors identification printing key or device which is insertible through a key opening 49 ina side of the casing and bears upon its innef-end a printing character denoting the particular conductor who has possession thereof; the other functions of this printing key are fully described in former patent No. 694.322 to which reference has already been made: 1
The dupl cate records asshown 1T1 '7 and 8 arefmade from two separate rolls of 1 registration of duplicate fares is signaled paper and '51 mounted in the base of the machine in alinementwith each other. The webs from these rolls are withdrawn between two feed'rollers 52 and 53 above a pressure pad,54 which elevates said Webs against the printing devices which are alined upon shaft 9,, and which-"include the duplicate printing counters, the duplicate date printing wheels, the duplicate fare-denomination rinting wheels, and the conductors identification printing key, and register identification de vices. The ressure. ad 54 is actuated by an eccentric a1: 56, the latter being turned by the key 56 which is inserted in the key hole 56", and theprinting devices are inked by an inking roller 55. The printing devices with the exception of the inking roll 55 are mounted upon side plates 56 which are nlngedat 57; these printing attachments are substantially the same as shown and described in former patents hereinbefore referred to.
Actuated simultaneously with the duplicate fare printing counters is a set of counters 58-59 and 60 which are otherwise known as tri or passenger wheels, and the purpose 0 which 'is to count or totalize the fares or passengers for a single trip or for any numher-of trips. These counters are of the well known construction being interconnected one with the other, so that the unit wheel will transfer to the tens wheel and the tens wheel will transfer to the hundreds wheel and so on. The actuating. member 13 throu hwhich the printing counters are operated is connected at its upper end to a link 61 which is pivoted to an actuating frame 62, which in turn, is loose upon the shaft 63 of said counters 5859 and 60. The actuating frame 62 carries a ratchet pawl 64 which engages a ratchet wheel 65 fixed to the unit wheel 60 of senger counters are set to zero by imparting movement to their shaft 63 from a finger iece 66 through gear wheels 67 and 68, the hatter wheel being fixed to the counter. shaft 63. In setting said counters to zero, the
shaft 63 picks up each wheel and carries said wheels in a, body to their zero setting positions, substantially as is described in my former patent No. 718,868 of Jan. 20, 1903.
Means are provided for compelling a complete movement of the individual actuating member 13 and consist's of a ratchet 69 made first to theinner'side of said member 13 and engaged by a awl 70 which is pivoted to a lever 71, the atter' being pivoted to. a stationarypart of the'frame 33072, and controll'eiel hya compression spring 173; Each upon a bell 74 through a hammer 75 which is actuated from a trip piece 76 engaged by alu 77 carried upon the actuating member 1 3. 1g. lndicates the conductors record; upon this record an impression of the conducto'rs'identification key 48 is not made,
spectors record as shown in Fig. 8, contains an impression of the 'conductors identifies tion key which appears at the right hand column upon the record sheet.
. WVhile I have described my single fare regoe whose ister as utilized with a single denomination of fare, to-wit cash fares, it 'will be understood that the sa inev may be converted instantly to a single fare register for any other specific denomination of fare, the only change in the entire machine necessary to so convert it, is the-changing of the permanent indicator 3. The indicator holder 3* is shown to contain a number of cards, any one of which may be utilized as a permanent indicator by remov' ing the one in front.
Theclass or-denomination of the fares registered and indicated in the register may be determined upon the records .or statements taken from the machine by means other than a printed or impressed character, for example, by using diii'erent'colors ofrolls of paper,
a certain determined color being employed to designate or identifyv a certain class of fares, or the ink roll or rolls may be supplied with difierentcolored inks to print upon the paper the rolls of which are the same color.
