Specification or ism- 2mm.
Patented Dec. 17, 1907.
A .ippnmsgnman ram 16.1907. sol-1.11 110.861.2563.
'To all whom it may concern Be itiineiwn that I, EUGENE =WrLs0N, a a citizen ofthe United States,residing at Fort ;Smith in the county of Sebastian and StateofArkansas, have invented a new and useful Stamp-Afi'ixing Device, Of'W lliGh the follow- -ing is a specification."
. This invention relates to 'a deViGGIfQI'j applying and aflix'ing'postag'e" stamps toen;
. the novel construction, combination and ar-. rangement of parts hereinafter described and 'ient artic velops, newspaperv wrappers, packages, etc, and comprises a simple, cheap andconvene capable of attachment to adesk or table or to astand to be placed on a desk for ap lying postage stamps one at a' time to mai able matter; and further, ,it consists inclaimed. a V In the accompanying drawings :'-Figure 1 is a perspective View of: the device attached to a stand in connection'with a sponge and cup for moistening articles on which stamps are to be aflixed. Fig. .2'is a vertical sect'ional view of the device attached to a' desk or tablet, Fig 3 is a perspective view'of one of the fparts. Fig. 4 is a verticalsectional the 'lliipper part of the device on theig. 2. Fig. 5 is a View similar vertedfU-sha ed support 4'con'1prising a flat top i; vertica paral sides 6 supporting said topj, and on the lower. end ofeach side 6 an ,outwardly turned foot 7, through-which fastening screws lpass; The top ,5 is preferably-horizontal and ofthe' size and shape of the postage stamps-to be supported thereon;
Surroundinlg the support4 and ads. ted to move vertica ing 9,
y thereonis arectang ar cas- 0 on at each end,--from op osite; sides of whicl i tongues 10 are stamp out of; the casing-Qflndturned inwardly as indicated in Fig. 4, or a strip 14 wifliturned 'down ends soldered or riveted inside; the casing, as shown in Fi'g. 5 may bee-substituted. A spiral spring 1 them against the under side of I the top; 5.
. 1.2 and the'casing depressed, bringingljt the tongue-'10 within the support 4 and against the base 2 as represented, the tendency-bein'g to keep the casing always in elevated position. he casing 9 rejects above 1 the top 5 ofthe support and orms a receptacl ormagazine 12 for postage stamps. Thebottom of the casing ends some distance above the plate 7, sothat it may be moved downwardou the su port 4 when pressed from above, the spring 11 yielding unden pressure and returning the casin to position when pressure is relieved. 'fhe upward "movement of the casing is limited by the tongues abutting against the under side of The. device may be made of sheet metal bent into sha e, or cast metal and'ornamen-ted to suit t e taste. tache d to a stand it is veryconvenient to place onj 'the same stand a sponge chp'13 and Ifthe; device is atsponge, as in Fig. 1, for moistemng'articles to be stamped.
The postage stamps, separated, are placed in the magazine-12 gum s1de uppermost, and when aletter is to be stamped, the corner of the envelop on which the same is to be afiixed is moistened by pressing it against the sponge in the cup 13. The moistened corner of the envelop is then placed on the ma azine e envelop into contact with a stamp w ch adheres thereto.
I claim A device for affixing stamps comprising a stationary-inverted U-shaped 0 en support Ihaving'a flat top and horizontal feet, a rectangular casing open at each end y projecting slidably mounted on'said support, tongues w cut from o posite sidesof; said casing and bent inwar y to bear against the under side .of said flat top for limiting the upwardmovement Ofsaid casing, and a spring pressing on said tongues tending to raise the casing.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my. signature in the presence oftwo witnesses.
