UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLF GEFALL, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUN GARY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESN E ASSIGNMENTS, TO HARRY J. REED, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GAS-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1907 Application filed July I. 1907. Serial No, 381603.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDoLF GEFALL, a subject of the Emperor of Austria I-Iungary, and a resident of the city of Vienna, in Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to burners used for illumination, a mantle being used to produce the light, and the object of the invention is to produce a burner that will concentrate the heat of the flame at the outer portion'of the burner and just inside the ring formed by the mantle. The object being to produce a flame of such shape as will give the maximum light with the least gas, and to produce a burner that will give a flame that will be cool at the center.
In the drawings, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout, Fig ure 1 is a sectional view of the burner, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a modified form of the burner, Fig. 1 is a plan of the burner on the line AB Fig. 1, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the burner on the line C D. Fig. 2.
The burner is of the common Bunsen type and intended to be attached to any gas fixture in a well known manner, the base screwing on the fixture. Air holes are provided in the base to allow the air to miX with the gas just prior to the burning of the same. If the gas is at once allowed to pass up to the mantle it is in such a small stream as to preclude the possibility of its heating the mantle near the bottom of the same, so it becomes necessary to introduce means into the top of the burner to spread the gas in order that the flame may be large enough in area to completely heat the mantle. The top of the burner is spread out as shown at G, into a cylinder larger than the base of the burner, and inside this top G is placed the smaller funnel shaped member H, the wider end of the funnel being placed at the top of the burner. In this funnel are placed the plates J, K which extend radially from the center of the burner, as shown in Fig. 1 and carried by the tops of these plates is a block M placed in the center of the burner. This lock and the radial plates are intended to cause the gas to spread out from the center of the burner and heat the mantle better than would be the case where the common screen is used, since the direction of flow of the gas when it escapes from the burner is somewhat transverse of the mantle fabric, L, which hangs over the burner. The same effect may be produced by means of the funnels Q and R in the burner P, Fig. 2, said funnels being held in place by means of the plate T at the top of the burner.
In order to spread the gas just at the top of the burner as it escapes therefrom, the block S is suspended from the plate T, and on this plate may be placed one of the blocks M, if desired.
Modifications of the invention may b made within the scope of the appended claims and the right to such as come within the scope of the same is reserved.
Having thus described my invention in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a gas burner, the combination of a burner of the Bunsen type having a cylindrical escape pipe, a funnel placed within said escape pipe with its small end down, means within the funnel to spread the gas to the outside of the escape pipe, and means above the funnel to assist in the spreading of the gas as it escapes from the burner.
2. In a gas burner, the combination of a burner of the Bunsen type having a cylindrical escape pipe, a funnel open at both ends placed within said. escape pipe and having its small end down, and a series'of means within said funnel and adapted to cause the stream of gas to escape from the burner as an annulus.
3. In a gas burner, the combination of a burner of the Bunsen type having a cylindrical escape pipe, a funnel open at both ends placed within said escape pipe, and a series of radial plates placed within said funnel and adapted to cause the gas to escape from the burner as an annulus.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses this 18th day of June A. D.
