2 SHEETS-SHEET 2 OTTO A. PUST, OF HOLLOWAY, MINNESOTA.
B AG-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1907.
Application filed May 22| 1907' Serial No. 375.186.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO A. PUsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holloway, in the county of Swift and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in bag holders and my object is to provide means for suspending a bag while the same is being filled.
A further object is to provide means for holding the mouth of the bag open so that articles can be readily entered therein.
A still further object is to provide means for raising and lowering the holding part of the device, wherebybags of different lengths may be accommodated and the mouth of the bag adjusted to suit the height of different users.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved bag holder complete, showing the bag suspended thereby. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig.- 3 is a central sectional view thereof. Fig. 4 is a top plan view showing the supporting uprights in section, and, Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of bag engaging devices.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the supporting uprights, or guides, for my improved bag holder, to the lower ends of which are secured brace bars 2, and 3 indicates cross bars which connect the uprights at their upper and lower ends.
Slidably mounted upon the uprights 1 is a beam 4, which is provided at each end with a socket 5, through which the uprights 1 extend. Depending from the beam 4 are hangers 6, which normally rest against the inner faces of the uprights 1 and are provided at their lower ends with bars 7, said bars being horizontally disposed and having their inner faces provided with grooves 88. Pivotally secured to the central ortion of the beam 4 and extending throug a slot 10 therein are arms 11 and 12, said arms being so arranged that they will have a scissors action, and said arms are provided at their lower ends with clamping bars 13 and 14 respectively, which are adapted to enter the grooves 8 in the bars 7 when the arms 11 and 12 are in their open position. The clamping bars 13 and 14 are provided at each end with upwardly and out wardly extending fingers 15, which are adapted to support the mouth of the bag 16, when the same is placed upon the clamping bars 13 and 14. 1
In order to hold the bars 13 and 14 in engagement with the grooves 8, I secure to the upper end of the bar 11, a latch 17, which is pivotally secured at one end to the arm 11, and is provided at its opposite end with a slot 18, through which extends the upper end of the arm 12, the opposite edges of the upper end of the arm 12 being provided with notches 1.9 and 20, the notches 19 being adapted to engage a pointed shoulder 21 at the upper, inner edge of the slot 18, which will result in holding the latch in its adjusted position, while the notches 20 are adapted to engage the wall at the outer edge of the slot 18 when the arms 11 and 12 are in their closed position.
' In order to allow the latch to be readily operated to close the arms, said latch is made in two sections and hinged together, one section being provided with a tongue 22, which extends between cars 23 on the opposite section, the lower face of said tongue being tapered to engage a similarly tapered portion on the opposite section, thereby limiting the pivotal movement of the two sections of the latch in one direction.
The beam 4 is raised or lowered to accommodate the same to different length bags journaled in a shaft 24 through the upper ends of the uprights 1 and fixing disks 25 to each end of the shaft to form spools 26, upon which are wound cables 27, the free ends of said cables being secured to the opposite ends of the beam 4, so that when the shaft 24 is rotated, the beam will be raised or lowered, one end of the shaft 24 being provided with a crank 28, through the medium of which the shaft may be readily rotated. The beam 4 is held in its adjusted position by securing to the shaft 24, adjacent the inner face of one of the uprights 1 a ratchet wheel 29, with which is adapted to engage a pawl 30 pivotally secured to the upright and engaging the ratchet wheel by gravity, thereby preventing the shaft 24 i then disposed in a horizontal position by alining the two sections of the latch and engaging the shoulder 21 in one of the notches 19 andby bringing down the free end of the latch 17, the arms 11 and 12 will be extended and the clamping bars 13 directed into the grooves 8, and by moving the free end of the latch firmly into engagement with the upper end of the arm 12, the bag will be clamped between the bars 13 and 14 and the bars 7 and in the grooves 8 and held in this position until the latch is released from the arm 12. As soon as the bag has been properly filled, the pawl 30 is moved out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 29, whereupon the cables are unwound by rotating the shaft 24 and being allowed to descend until the bag rests upon the floor, whereupon the latch 17 is released from the arm 12 by swinging the two sections of the latch on their pivot pin, which will result in moving the clamping bars towards each other and out of the groove 8, and after the clamping bars are soreleased, the mouth of the bag is disengaged from the fingers 15 and the beam 4 elevated sufficiently to raise the clamping bars out of engagement with the bag, when the filled bag may be removed and a new bag placed in position on the clamping bars and fingers, and the above operation repeated.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very cheap and efiicient form of bag holder, and one that can be adjusted to accommodate bags of different lengths, and it will further be seen that the bags may be quickly attached to or removed from the holder, and that the bag may be raised or lowered to suit the convenience of the operator.
What I claim is:
1. A bag holder of the class described, comprising a pair of uprights, abeam having a socket at each end thereof, slidably mounted on said uprights, standards depending from said beam, bars on the lower ends of said standards, said bars having grooves on the inner faces thereof, crossed arms pivotally secured to said beam, clamping bars at the lower ends of said arms, fingers on said clamping bars, means at the upper ends of said bars to move said clamping bars into said grooves, and additional means to raise and lower said beam and parts carried thereby.
2. A bag-holder of the class described, comprising the combination with a pair of uprights, and means to support the same; of a beam, having a socket at each end thereof to receive said uprights, depending standards on said beam, a baron the lower ends of each of said standards having longitudinally extending grooves on the inner faces thereof, a pair of crossed arms pivotally mounted on said beam, clamping bars on the lower ends of said arms adapted to enter said grooves, a latch pivotally secured to one of said arms, and having a slot in its opposite end to receive the other arm, notches at the upper end of the last mentioned arm, a shoulder on the latch adapted to engage said notches and hold .the arms in their open position, means to release said shoulder from the notches and additional means to lower and raise said beam and parts carried thereby.
3. A bag-holder of the class described, comprising the combination with standards; of a beam slidably mounted on said standards, bars carried by said beam and having grooves on their inner faces, a pair of arms pivotally secured to said beam, clamping bars on said arms adapted to enter said grooves, upwardly and outwardly extending fingers on said clamping bars, a latchformed in two sections and pivoted together, one end of said latch being pivotally secured to one of the arms, the opposite end thereof having a slot to receive the upper end of the opposite arm, said last mentioned arm having a plurality of notches therein, means on the latch to engage said notches and additional means to limit the pivotal movement of the two sections of the latch in one direction.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OTTO A. PUST.
