Description
l gaat met WILLIA'M G. TUTTLE, =OF GENEVA, YORK. Letters Patent lira-87,381, dated March 2, 1869.
IMPROVEIWENT IN FILE FOR @AUG-ING' TEE TEETH DI' CROSS-CUT SAWS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
invented a certain new and useful Improvement for Evening the Clearing-Teeth "of Gross-Ont Saws; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making part-of this specication, inwhich- Figure l is a plan of my improvedinstrurnent.
Figure 2,. asimilar view, looking on the opposite side.
Figure 3, a cross-section, showing the application of the instrument to the teeth of' a saw, in filing.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My improvement is specially applicable to that class of saws having alternate cutting and clearing-teeth, the cutting-teeth being set on opposite sides to out the keit, while the clearing-teeth stand straight forward to clear it. It is necessary, in ling', that the clearing-teeth be cut down toa shorter length than the cutting ones, and to accomplish this, my invention consists inr combining, with 'a common le, two adjustable bars, which ride upon the points of the alternate cutting-teeth, while the file itself, which is set lower, rides upon the intermediate clearing-tooth,-aud cuts down itsj point to the right gauge;
In the drawings- A indicates an ordinary at-le blade, and B, its
handle. Y v
I combine with this file two flat bars C G, situated respectively on opposite sides,.and parallelgwith the blade. y A
I make these bars adjustable higher or lower, rela- -tively with the blade, by any suitable means, that represented inthe drawings, being cross-pieces D l), having sockets a a, of greater depth than the blade which ts therein, and connected with the blade by'screws b, b, and c, above .and below.
By turning these screws correspondingly forward or back, it willbe seen that the bars can be set correspondingly above the plane ofthe cutting-edge ofthe file, on either one side or the other.
The cutting down' or evening of the clearing-teeth g .is accomplished by setting the file-blade A below the plane of the bars G C, as shown in fig. 3, theny ling said clearing-tooth down till the smooth bars strike on top of the points of the cutting-teeth, when the proper gauge will be attained. When this is accomplished, the cutting-teeth are filed in the usual way.
This is au extremely simple method of cutting down the clearing-teeth, and when the work is don'e, all the teeth are ofan even gauge, and, therefore, the saw is in the best condition for use. IVhen one side of the file is worn out, the adjustment can be reversed, and the opposite side used.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.lhe combination of the adjustable bars G C with lthe leblade A, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In combination with the above, I also claim the cross-pieces D D, and screws b b c, in the manner and for the purpose specied.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
W. G. TUTTLE.
Witnesses i R. F. Oscoon, H. S. FAIBGHILD.
