Description

` PATENT/.En DEG. lfo, 1907. J. BALL. @As BURNER. v APPLICATION FILED HAE. 31, 1906.
JAMES BAEL, OF LOUISA, KENTUCKY GAS-BURNER.
Specication of Letters Patent.
PatentedDec.' 10, 1907.
Application filed March 31, 1906. Serial No.` 309,146-
.To all whom. it may vconcern:
Be 1t known that I, JAMES BALL, a citizen of the United States, resldmg at Loulsa, in
Y the county ol" llawrence and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the lfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to gas burners and the object ol the invention is to provide a simple, economical and eli'ective gas burner by 11i-.ans of which .an exceptionally hot llame is obtained througlra novel arrangement of inlet and outlet openings, whereby the and air are thoroughly mixed preparatory to the escape of the mixture, and the merging oli the escaping jets of the mixturc is insured, the same being roductive of a more thorough combustion o the mixture andv incidentally a hotter and more satisfactory flame.
With the above general object in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accomj'ianying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a burner embodying. the present invention.A Fig, 2 is a plan View of the saine.
The burner comprises essentially a mixing A, chamber l which, in the preferred embodiment of this invention, is in the form of a cone, as shown in Fig. 1, the same being provided at intervals around its outer side with air inlet openings 2 of considerable size.v
Extending downward from the bottom 8 of the nnxmg chamber 1s a gas inlet nozzle 4 which is threaded, as shown at 5, to adapt the saine to be connected to a service or supf ply pipe. -At its opposite or upper end, the conical mixing chamber isprovided with an upstanding nozzle or neck 6 which iits into a tubular boss or entrance nozzle 7 arranged centrally of a distributing chamber 8 and extending downward from the bottoni thereof,
as clearly shown in Fig. 1, the parts 6 and fi being detachably connected together by [means of a set screw 9.
The distributing chamber 8 .of the burner may be of any desired form, being shown as of oblong and substantially rectangular shape in plan and closed at all points with the exception of a multiplicity of outlet ports 10 in the upper side thereof, These ports are quite small and are boredat an inclination. It
will be observed by reference to Fig. 1 that some of the'ports are .inclined in one direction and the rest in the other direction. These ports are so arranged that those which lie next Ato each other incline in op osite directions or slant obliqiiely u war 4toward each other, thereby causing t e jets of mix- `ture passing outward and upward therethrough to merge or combine and intermingle just above the upper surface .of the burner which has the effect of a more thorough mixingofthe gas immediately upon its escape from the distributing chamber and obtaining thereby a more thorough combustion an consequently a llame of greater heating capacity.
I claim A gas burner comprising a cone-shaped f mixing chamber with a series of openings arranged at suitable distances apart aroundits surrounding wall, the bottom of the chamber having a de ending screw threaded nozzle, a neck forme( by a continuation oi' the upper end ol the cone, a flat top distributing chamber having a single row of inclined outlet openings arranged on opposite 'sidesof its top sol portion, said openings being constructed in pairs and arranged at suitable distances apart, and said distributing chamber having a central nozzle serving to be slidably mounted on said neck and a set screw for detachably securing the nozzle to said neck, substantially as speciiied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
, JAMES BALL.
