To all whom it may concern: j
- Be it known that we, FREDERICK NEVINS and WILLIAM B. Monnwoon, both citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, and of the city of Elizabeth, county of Union, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Terminal Clips, of
which the following is a specification.
Thisjnventionrelates to supporting devices and more particularly to such as are designed and adapted for S11 porting a man when standing'on a Window edge.
The object of the invention is to furnish an with convenience and despatch and which,
.- when applied to the bolt, will be locked sggsliinst accidental disengagement with the o t.
The above-and further objects will be apparent from the following description.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in
which like numerals indicate,corresponding' parts, and in which,'-
Figure 1 is a seetionalelevation of a clip in combination with a wall bolt shown in elevation; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken along line 22 of Fig. 1. and showing the wall bolt in plan; and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the clip showing a belt strap secured to the eye of the clip.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the terminal supporting-clip and 2 indicates the wall bolt. The
wall bolt 2 comprises a web-like shank 3, to
be located in the interstices between bricks of a building construction; a projecting neck 4; and an enlarged head 5, which may'prelerably be square, as indicated in the drawings.
The clip 1 and the belt 2 may each preferably be cast an entirety in bronze or other suitable metal. The clip 1 comprises a base member 6, sides 7 and 8, an end closure 2) and a top closure 10'. As shown in Fig. 1, the lower extremities of the base member (5 and the sides 7 and 8 are outwardly offset and terminate in an eye 11 to which may be socured the end of a belt strap 1.2. The base member 6 is p ovided with a longitudinal slot 13 which extends from the side of the 'bolt head opening 14 located near the eye end of the clip to a curved wall 15 at the ter minal end of the clip. The slot 13 opens into a longitudinal channel 16 extending between the sides 7 and 8 and of substantially uniform cross section throughout its length from the bolt head opening 14 to its opposite end 17.
The bolt head opening 14 may preferably be square to conform to the contour of the bolt head 5 and as illustrated. Furthermore, this bolt head opening may preferably be of a size to permit the passage therethrough of the bolt head 5 only when the square faces of the bolt head are parallel with the square walls of the opening 14. The width of the channel 16 may be such that the bolt head 5 may pass freely therethrough in any position, the edges of the slot 13 always keeping the bolt head 5 clear of the sides 7 and 8 and the end closure 9. A curved Wall 15 forms the end closure for the slot 13 and is designed to engage the neck 4 of the bolt 2 so that the clip 1 may swivel about the bolt head 5 and be secured in a manner similar to a ball and socket joint.
The longitudinal top closure 10 for the channel 1 6 is offset at 18 to permit a gate 19 to be swung clear of the channel 16. The gate 15) is pivotally supported by the clip and constitutes automatic means for preventing the accidental exit of the bolthead from the channel 16. As shown, the gate 15) is pivoted upon a pin 20 piercing the sides 7 and 8 and forms pivoting'mcans. The gate 19 is arranged to rest against a back stop to prevent its outward swing.- As illustrated, this stop is formed by two shoulders 21 and 22 at the entrance of the channelv 16. The gate 19 is preferably provided witha finger cngagcahle lip 23 for manually swinging the gate 1!! out of the channel 16 intothe position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Suitable provisions are provided to hold the gate 19 against the shoulders 21 and 22 when the clip is in upright position. These provisions may be in the form of a spring 24 or the pivoting oi'fithc gate so that gravity will tend to hold'tl'uygate in closing )osition against the shoulders 21 and 22, when the clip is in upright position. i
The clip 1 may be applied to the bolt 2 with convenience and despatch by workmen, it being necessary for them to employ but one hand for the operation. This is likewise true of the manual removal of the clip 1 from the bolt 2.
To attach the clip to the bolt, the clip 1 is held in an upright position and ap lied to the bolt head 5 so that the bolt head passes out through-the bolt head opening 14. A downward pressure then causes the bolt head 5 to engage the pivoted gate 19, which swings up into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 allowing the bolt head 5 to pass up through the passage 16 until the curved wall 15 engages the neck 4 upon which the clip may work with the freedom provided in a oall and socket joint. As soon as the bolt head has passed the gate 19, the gate moves into the position illustrated to lock the chi against accidental removal from the be t head 5. If, by any accident, as by a blow, the clip 1 should be moved upwardly, the bolt head 5 would strike against the gate 19, which would prevent the neck 4 being disengaged by the slot 13.
To remove the clip 1 from the bolt head 5 the clip may be grasped by one hand, moved upwardly, and, by the engagement of one finger with the lip 23, the gate 19 may be moved into the position shown in dotted lines, when a further upward movement of the clip 1 brings the bolt head 5 into alinement with the bolt head opening 14 and an outward movement of the clip 1 causes the assage of the bolt head 5 through the bolt ead opening 14 and the complete removal of the clip 1.
Although a preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is obvious that modifications of the same may be made within the scope of the invention.
Although the sides 7 and 8 and the end and top closures 9 and 10 are preferred, they are not essential to the roperoperation of the clip. The base member 6 suitably strengthened and provided with the slot 13 and a. suitable top to prevent the exit of the bolt neck form alone a desirable clip.
What is claimed and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is p l. A supporting terminal clip comprising an eye at one end sides providing a longitu- F ward swing of said gate to clear the-bolt head upon its entrance and permitting the readily manually effected inward swing of said gate so that the clip may be released and removed by one hand alone.
2. In combination, a wall bolt comprising a neck and an enlarged head, with a supporting terminal clip comprising an eye at one end sides providing a longitudinal channel therebetween; a base member provided with a longitudinal slot connecting with said channel and provided with a bolt head opening for the eye end of said slot; a bolt neck engaging wall for the terminal end of said slot; a longitudinal closure for the top of said channel; a gate comprising a rigid plate normally extendin across said channel at the end near said bolt head opening; ivoting means for said gate; a stop for sai gate to prevent the outward swing thereof and the accidental .exit of the bolt head from said channel but permitting the automatic inward swing of said gate to clear the bolt head upon its entrance and permitting the readily manually effected inward swing of said gate so that the clip may be released and removed by one hand alone.

A supporting terminal clip comprising an eye at one end; sides providing a longitudinal channel therebetween; a base member provided with a longitudinal slot connecting with said channel and provided with abolt head opening for the eye end of said slot a bolt neck engaging wall for the terminal end of said slot; a gate comprising a rigid plate normally extending across said channel at the end near said bolt head opening; pivoting means for said gate secured to said sides at a greater distance away from said base member than the thickness of the bolt head; a stop for said gate to prevent the outward swing thereof and the accidental exit of the bolt head from said channel but permitting clear the bolt head upon its entrance and permitting the readily manually ell'ected inward swing of said gate so that the clip may be released and removed by one hand alone.

A supporting terminal clip comprising an eye at one end sides providing a longitudinal channel therebetween; a base member provided with a longitudinal slot connecting with said channel and provided with abolt head opening for the eye end of said slot; a bolt neck engaging wall for the terminal end of said slot; a longitudinal closure for the top of said channel; a gate comprisim a rigid plate normally extending across said channel at the end near said bolt head opening; piv oting means for said gate secured to said sides at a greater distance away from said base member than the thickness of thebolt head; a stop for said gate to prcvontthe outward swing thereof and the accidental exitof the bolt head from said channel but perthe automatic inward swing of said gate to mitting the automatic inward swing of said gate to clear the bolt head upon its entrance and permitting the readily manually efieeted inward swing of said gate so that the clip may be released and removed by one hand alone.

A. supporting terminal clip comprising an eye at one end; sides providing a longitudinal channel therebetween; a base member provided with a longitudinal slot connecting with saidchannel and provided with a bolt head opening for the eye end of said slot; a bolt neck engaging of said slot; a gate; pivoting means for said gate engaging said sides between said bolt head opening and said socket; a stop to prevent the outward swing of the gate, said gate being arranged to engage said stop, permitting the entrance of the bolt head into the channel but preventing its accidental exit .lrom the channel; and a finger engageable lip extending outwardly beyond said pivoting'means for swinging said gate inward to permit the exit of the bolt head from the 7 channel, all forming a clip capable of ready application and removal by one hand alone.
6. A supporting terminal clip comprising an eye at one end; sides providing a longituwall for the terminal end dinal channel therebetween; a base member provided with a longitudinal slot connecting with said channel and provided with a bolt head opening for the eye end of said slot; a bolt neck engaging wall for the terminal end of said slot; a longitudinal closure for the top of said channel; a gate; pivoting means for said gate engaging said sides between said bolt head opening and said socket; a stop to l prevent the outward swing of the gate, said gate being arranged to engage said stop, permitting the entrance of the bolt head into the channel but preventing its accidental exit from the channel; and a finger engageable lip extending outwardly beyond said pivoting means for swinging said gate inward and toward said top closure to permit the exit of the bolt head from the channel, all forming a clip ca able of ready application and removal one hand alone.
