Description

No. 872,696: PATENTED DEC. 3, 1907.
E. M. THOMAS. BROOM MOISTENER.
APPLICATION FILED APE.23,1907.
- [/VVENTQR "ffz oma y EDWARD M. THOMAS, or NORWAY, MAINE.
BROOM-MOiSTENER.
Specification of- Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed April 23. 1907. Serial No. 869.770,
novel means for distributing water, oil or other liquid centrally of the broom, permitting it to pass down the bristles or fiber from which the broom is made whereby' the liquid is evenly distributed on the surface to be operated upon; further, an object of the invention is to produce a novel form of clamp; with means for supporting a reservoir at varying heights with relation to the broom head, and permitting the ready adjustment of the tank as the broom is worn; further more, an' object of the.invention'is to produce a tank which may be detached from a worn broom and applied to a new broom,
and to provide a distributing head and means for preventing the clogging of the discharge openings in said head.
Finally an object of the invention is to' produce a device of the character noted which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, proving at the same time comparatively inexpensive to produce and maintain.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully setforth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accom anying drawing forming part of this speci cation, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views and in which:
Figure 1, is a view in elevation of the broom with a moistening apparatus emhody ing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2, illustrates the invention detached from the broom. Fig. 3, is-a fragmentary sectional view enlarged of an end of the discharge pipe.
In these drawings 1, denotes a tank 0r res ervoir, which may be of any suitable construction, preferably of the shape shown. A
screw cap 2, is provided for the reservoir and it is adjustable to permit the access of air to the interior in order that the flow of the liquid therefrom may be regulated; the discharge being proportionate to the air admitted.
The reservoir has a tapered bottom 3, and a depending discharge pipe 4, which is arranged on a curve and communicates at its lower endwith a cross pipe 7, of a length approximately the width of the broom. This cross ,pipe 7, is provided with perforations 8, through which the liquid from the reservoir is discharged. In order to prevent foreign substance from gaining access to and clogging the discharge openings, I provide a fibrous strainer 9, which extends longitudinally of the pipe 7, from end to end. The ends of the pipe 7, are provided with plu s 10, and the fibrous material is clamped within the head between the plugs, this preventing displacement of the strainer and fouled.
The curvature of the stem is such as to throw the head into the center of the broom in order that the discharge may be directed to moisten both surfaces of the broom uniformly.
The clamp 11, comprises a strip of metal curved to embrace thetank, the ends of the strip converging and lying parallel as at 12;
the said parallel sections being provided with corresponding holes for the reception of the,v clamping bolt 13 the extremities of the strip ortions are curved to beyond the parallel esigned to embrace a form a socket 14, broom handle.
The inclination of the tank with relation to permitting its removal when the broom handle may be varied in order that the sprinkler head may be inserted in the center of the broom head varying in thickness.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
In a broom moistener, a tank or reservoir suitably supported, a pipe leading from the reservoir, a sprinkler head secured to the pipe, plugs in the ends of the head and a fibrous strainer extending longitudinally of the head and secured therein by a plug as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I a'ffix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. EDWARD M. THOMAS. Witnesses: f I
GEO. A. BROOKS, WILLIAM F. Jones.
