SPANNER WRENCH. ABPLIOATION FILED AUG. 21, 1907.

WILLIAM w. VOGEL, OF CHICAGO, OHIO.
SPANNER-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.-
Application filed August 21.1907- Serial No. 389.523.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. VOGEL,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a newand useful Spanner-Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to spanner wrenches especially adapted to be used for screwing an unscrewing fruit jar caps and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and an effective wrench of the character indicated which may be easily and readily applied to and detached from the jar cap an which may be operated u on the same without crushing or mutilating t e cap. It consists primarily of a pair of jaws lying in the same plane and which are adapted to move longitudinally with relation to each other in order to accommodate jar caps of different diameter. A cuneate handle bar is arranged to move transversely across the jaws and in its transverse movement moves the said jaws longitudinally with relation to each other.
In the accompanying drawingz-Figure l is a perspective view of the wrench applied to a jar cap. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the jar cap showing the wrench jaws in elevation with parts in section, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view ofthe jar cap and wrench, the section through the wrench being cut longitudinally of the handle bar thereof.
The wrench consists of the jaws 1 and 2 which lie in the same plane and each of which is provided with a flange 3. The
- flanges 3, 3 are oppositely disposed with its larger end with a perforation 8, whereby, the wrench may be hung upon a nail or other support, and the said handle bar 7 is provided at its reduced end with a punched up.
section 9 which is disposed to one side of the handle bar 7 and presents an obstruction whichv prevents the handle bar 7 from becoming disengaged from the loops of the jaws.
From' the foregoing description it is obvious that, when the handle bar 7 is moved longitudinally so that the reduced end thereof is brought between the loops 5 and 6 of the jaws, the said jaws 1 and 2 may be spread apart so that the flanges 3, 3 may receive the opposite side of a jar cap between them. The said handle bar 7 is then moved longitudinally in the opposite direction so that the inclined edges of the said handle bar, operating against the sides of the loops 5 and 6 will draw the jaws l and 2 together kPatented Dec. 3, i907.
and cause the oppositely disposed flanges 3, 3 to positively engage the sides of the jar cap. Thus the implement is applied to the cap then, by turning, the wrench, using the handle bar 7 as a lever, the jar cap is turned axially and is screwed or unscrewed upon the jar. To disengage the wrench from the jar cap the parts are moved in a reverse manner to that above described.
Having described my invention what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is A wrench comprising jaws adapted to move longitudinally with relation to each other, one of the jaws having at its inner end a bifurcation with loops located at the opposite sides thereof, the other aw having a loop at its inner end which lies within the bifurcation of the first said jaw, and a handle bar located slidably in said. 100 s.
In testimony that I claim t e foregoing as myown, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM W. VOGEL.
