SECURING DEVICE FOR ROPES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. Ln MAIRE,
' citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing Devices for Ropes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to fasteners, especially adapted for clothes line apparatus, and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device whereby the two ends of a line can be securely fastened without the necessity of tying, thereby permitting said parts to be easily disconnected, either for the purpose of loosening or tightening the line.
The great objection heretofore experienced in the use of clothes line apparatus has been the tendency of the lines to shrink and break when exposed to rain or else become very loose during dry hot weather. It is a very difficult matter to untie a knot in a wet ropeor cord and for thisreason the use of a securing device which obviates the necessity of tying the rope is very advantageous.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention, and in said drawings-Figure 1 is an elevation showing two ends of a rope fastened by means of my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof, and, Fig. 3 is a detail view of the fastener.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference 1 is a strip of metal having a series of preferably three apertures 2, 3 and 4, formed therein in alinement and one face of the strip has a transversely-extending recess 5 therein adjacent each end.
In using this fastener one end of the rope 6 is knotted permanently as shown at 7 and said end is then inserted through the aperture 2 while the other end of the rope is inserted successively through the apertures 4 and 3, then around the other end of the rope close to the plate 1 and finally between the.
other end of plate 1 and the taut portion of the rope, the free end being held within the recess 5 adjacent thereto.
It will be seen that any pull exerted upon the rope will cause the free end thereof to be clamped between the plate and the taut portions of the rope and at the same time the walls of the apertures 3 and l will bind on the rope and as a result of these actions the two ends will be securely held together and cannot slip.
Should it be desired to tighten or loosen the rope the free end thereof is pulled from bet-ween the taut portions of the rope and the plate 1 and is then removed in a desired direction through the apertures 3 and 4, after which the parts are caused to reassume the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The face of the plate having the transverse recesses therein is tapered from the outer edges of said recesses to the ends of the plate, thereby enabling the end of the rope to more readily take between the plate and the taut portion of the rope.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved. article of manufacture the herein described rope securing device comprising a strip of metal having a plurality of alined elongated apertures one between two others extending in the direction of the length of the strip, the uppersurtace of the strip being formed with a transverselyextending recess near each end between the end of the adjacent aperture, each end of the strip beyond its transverse recess being tapered from the outer edge of the recess to the end of the strip.
