TOBACCO-LATE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
Application filed February 6. 1907. Serial No. 356077.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA SEBRING, citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Darke, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tob acco-Lath Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a tobacco lath holder, and particularly to means for supporting the laths or strips upon which the toacco is being spudded or hung for drying or curing purposes, and also for the support of a stripping tool.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved form of holder adapted to support oppositely extending laths and to be attached to the standards.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction and arrangement of these standards with folding. base strips or sills extending therefrom by which the parts may be compactly folded for storage or transportation.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and. the novel features thereof defined by the through into which the ends of the oppositely extending strips or laths 3 are inserted, said passage being provided at its midlength with inwardly projecting lugs 4 which separate the same into two sockets of equal length. In order to securely retain the holder against lateral displacement from the Weight of the laths and the material thereon securing lugs 5 are disposed centrally of each socket at opposite sides of the holder so that the resistance to the strain may be at the most effectual point.
The base or standard 1 is provided at the rear with the sill or base 6 adapted to receive one of the holders 2 which may be used for supporting the stripping fork 7. This sill is attached to the rear of the standard 1 by means of the connecting hinge 8 so that it may be folded upward against the standard for the purpose of storage or transportation. At opposite sides of the standard the base pieces 9 are disposed and connected by hinges 10 so as to fold upward into contact therewith, and when in the position shown in Fig. 1 to resist any lateral tendency to overturn the standard owing to the weight of material upon the parts carried by the upper portion thereof. The sills and base pieces may be braced in any preferred manner, for instance, the braces 11 are shown as extending from the base ieces 9 to the standard 1, and there seeurecf passing theretln'ough. A brace 13 is also shown as secured to the standard at its side and to the stripper sill 6. This sill is also held rigid by means of the braces 14 extend ing therefrom to the base pieces 9.
In the use of the invention it will be seen that when the standard and base portions are properly braced an absolutely secure support is provided adapted to receive oppositely extending hanging strips or laths upon which the tobacco may be suspended, and the holder for these laths is of such construction as to securely support the same upon the standard. The invention is used with a spear head on the free end of the lath which is forced through the tobacco stalk and the latter pushed toward the holder until the lath is filled when the lath is removed for drying and curing the tobacco thereon. The lugs within the holder resist the pushing strain on the laths incident to the spudding operation so that two persons can work at opposite sides of the holder. It also obviates the necessity of a permanent spudding support as after the use of the invention the parts may be readily folded upon the standard and stored in the minimum of space. The folding is accomplished by simply removing the bolts and disconnecting the braces when the opposite base pieces and stripper sill can be folded into contact with the standard. When this sill is to be used for stripping the standard may be turned downward into the position shown in Fig. 3 so that the sill will lie in a substantially vertical plane and the lath or strip containing by the bolt 12 the tobacco may be assed through the fork and stripped from t e lath to fall in proper position for subsequent storage or treatment.
Having noW described my invention and set forth its merits, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. As an article of manufacture, a lath holder casing having a central partition to form inclosed sockets at the opposite ends thereof, and attaching lugs at the opposite sides of the holder at substantially the longitudinal center of each socket.
2. A lath holder comprising a vertical standard, oppositely disposed base pieces pivotally connected to the sides of said standard to foldupward against the same, a rearwardly extending sill pivotally connected to the standard to fold against the same, and a lath holder extending transversely of the standard to support laths parallel to said base pieces. I
3. A lath holder comprising a standard, a holder casing mounted thereon, oppositely disposed base pieces pivotally connected to the standard to fold against the same, a rear- Wardly extending sill pivotally connected to the standard to fold a ainst the same, and a stripper holder carrie by the upper face of said sill.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature Witnesses:
T. C. MAHER, ADELBERT MARZ.
