Speeeation of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
Application filed December 23. 1904. Serial No. 238.117. Renewed August l. 1906. Serial No. 328.761.
To all 'whom it may concern:
13e it known that l, CHARLES HENRY MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Boat, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to boats of the motor-propelled types, though the character of the motor does not enter into or become any material l'eature of' the said invention. y
The primary object is to provide a novel boat structure, wherein the motor employed may be placed comparatively low, and to employ means for buoying such boat to make the same of light draft, thereby securingT two important features, namely, a boat that is properly seated in the water, not top heavy, and one that the water can act upon with comparatively little resistance.
The preferred embodiment of the invention by means of which these objects are accomplished is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the boat. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the body member. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the same. Fig.` 7 is a top plan view of the central keel member. Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the same, and Fig. 9 is a side elevation thereof.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the embodiment illustrated, the boat consists of a body member l0, a central keel member 11, and a pair of side keel members 12. The body may be of any desired configuration, theA same net being particularly important. It is provided with a bottom 13, preferably, though not necessarily, flat, said bottom carrying a depending centrally disposed chamber 1li, extending longitudinally oi the boat and having an open upper mouth 15, communicating with the interior of the body member. This chamber is adaptedV to receive the motor which may be of any form or type desired.
Arranged against the under side of the bottom 13 and extending longitudinally of the body member is the relatively stationary central oppositely tapered boatshaped keel member 1l., the same having a continuous outstanding ange 16, by means of which it is riveted or otherwise secured to said bottom. This keel member has a Centrally disposed pocket 17, that receives the On opposite sides of said pocket 17 are formed air chambers 18, the same being entirely inclosed, and havingtops 19, that rest against the bottom 13j, The central keel member is furthermore-provided at its ends with upstanding stems 20, which extend upwardly at the opposite ends of the body member and are suitably secured thereto. The side keel members l2 are in the form oi hollow bodies, each containing a continuous air chamber and having a top 2l., that rests against the bottom 13, said side members being provided with flanges 22, by means of which they arc secured to said bottoms. This construction, it will be observed, is comparatively simple so that it can be manufactured with case and at small cost, and furthermore, the motor is low in the boat so that said boat is not top heavy, while the air chambers of considerable area are ranged entirely about it and beneath the boat body. The result is that the boat has slight draft and the parts that are actually in the water are so constructed that they will afford comparatively little resistance.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages oi the invention.
new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a boat, the combination with a body member having a bottom and a chamber depending below said bottom, of a keel member secured to the body and located below the bottom thereof, said keel member having,r a pocket that receives the depending chamber.
2. In a boat, the combination with a body member having a bottom and a chamber depending below said bottom, of'u keel member secured to the body and located below the bottom thereof, said keel member having a pocket between its ends that receives the depending chamber and being furthermore provided with air chambers located on opposite sides of the pocket.
In a boat, the combination with a body member having a bottom and a central chamber depending below the bottom and opening into the interior of the boat, of a keel member iitted against the bottom and having a flange secured thereto, said keel member having :1 central open-topped pocket that receives the chamber and having inclosed air chambers located in longitudinal alinement with the pocket.
.t. In a boat, the combination with a body member having a bottom, of a plurality of keel members secured side by side to and longitudinally' of said bottom, said keel members havingr tops that t against the bottom and being furthermore provided with air chambers.
5. In a boat, the combination with a body member having a bottom and an open-topped chamber depending below said bottoni and communicating with the interior of the body member, of a centrally disposed keel member secured longitudinally to the central portion of the bottom and having a pocket that receives the chamber, air chambers formed in the opposite end portions of the keel member, and other keel members secured to the bottom on opposite sides of the central member, said latter keel members also having air chambers.
6. In a boat, the combination with a body member having a bottom, of a keel member secured to the bottom, said keel member having an intermediate open-topped pocket, and inclosed air chambers located beneath the bottom of the body member and on opposite sides of the pocket.
7. A boat, comprising a body member having a bottom, a chamber depending below Said bottom and having an open top within the body, said chamber being of less length than the body member, and a keel associated with the chamber and disposed beneath the bottom.
8. A boat, comprising a body member having a bottom, a chamber depending below said bottom and having an open top within the body, said chamber being of less length than the body member, and a keel located longitudinally of the body beneath the bottom and having a portion cut away to receive the chamber.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, l have hereto afized my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
' CHARLES HENRY MYERS.
