To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN Weiss, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of the town of Trossingen, Kingdom of "iirtemberg, and Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to musical wind instruments of the mouth organ type designed to produce musical sounds by the blowing and exhausting of air in connection with harmonical reeds.

To this end the invention has in view the provision of a simple, practical, and attractive construction of wind musical instrument combining the desirable features of a harmonica and reed organ whereby musical sounds of rich tone and quality can be produced in conjunction with a mouth piece manipulated in the manner of the common harmonica.

With these and other objects in view which will more readily appear to those skilled in the art of musical instruments, the present invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

The essential features of the invention involved in the novel combination of sound trumpets, the mouth piece, and the arrangement of the duplex reed devices within each trumpet, are necessarily susceptible to some structural change without departing from the scope of the invention, a preferred embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a musical instrument constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the mouth piece illustrating the relation of the wind holes therein and the preferable manner of positioning the individual trumpets. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of one of the trumpets illustrating the ar rangement of the detachable duplex reed devices therein of the shape illustrated in Fig. 4. Fig. 1 is a detail in perspective of one of the (luplex reed devices associated with each of the trumpets shaped to fit the trumpets illustrated in Fig. 1.

The preferred form of the invention shown in the drawings comprises in its general organization, a mouth piece 1, a series of tone trumpets 2, and a detachable duplex reed device arranged within each trumpet and designated in its entirety by the reference numeral 3. It is preferable in constructing the mouth piece 1 to preserve the conventional form of an ordinary harmonica mouth piece, but to provide for the novel arrangement of the tone trumpets 2 the mouth piece of the present invention is pierced by a plurality of wind parts in the i 1 I I, f r i f l l I i I l I I; f 1

holes at the entire group of which'holes are diver-gently related to provide for a corresponding grouping or relation of the trumpets 2. Each of the wind holes 4 of the mouth piece 1 receives therein, from one side of the mouth piece, what may be characterized as the inner end of one of the tone trumpets 2, each of which trumpets essentially consists of a trumpet shaped pipe or tube having a conventional trumpet hell 5 at its outer end, and in addition thereto provided at an intermediate point between its ends in the side thereof with a sound augmenting opening 6 cooperating with the reed device inside of the trumpet pipe or tube.

Each reed device includes in its construction a flat reed plate 7 provided at its opposite extremities with the right angularly bent and reversely disposed partition ears 8 projecting respectively from opposite sides of the longitudinal plane of the plate and rounded to fit the inner circular wall of the trumpet pipe or tube. The said partition ears 8 in connection with the plate itself, serve to provide a close fitting partition lying longitudinally and centrally within the trumpet pipe or tube to separate the interior thereof into the separate compartments 9 and 10 respectively upon opposite sides of the reed plate 7. The latter is further provided therein with a pair of spaced sound openings 12 covered respectively by the reversely arranged reeds 13 and H which cooperate with these openings in a manner common to the reeds of reed organs or similar musical instruments. By reason of the reverse arrangement of the reeds 13 and 14, one is arranged at one side of the reed plate and one at the other and consequently one reed is actuated by blowing into the tone trumpet and the other by exhausting air through and from the latter. Also, it is to be observed that the two reeds 13 and 14 are tuned a half a tone apart as are the reeds of a harmonica. The entire reed device 3 is readily removable longitudinally from the trumpet pipe or tube in which it is fitted for purposes of repair or adjustnient.

The pitch of the different trumpets is indicated l. Y numerals or other suitable designations provided on the mouth piece, and in order to secure a, most effective display and disposal of the tone trumpets the same are grouped so as to have a graduated projection from the back of the mouth piece, as well as the divergent arrangement plainly shown in Fig. l of the drawings.

I claim:

In a musical instrument. a mouthpiece. a plurality of trumpets carried thereby, a side opening in each trumpet, and a reed device in the trumpet adjacent to the sound opening.
