SIGNALING DEVICE FOR HEADLIGHTS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WEssEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of liexar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signaling Devices [or Headlights; and I do declare the i'ollowing to be a lull. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in signaling devices and more particularly one for use on a locomotive or marine head light; or the like.
The object of the invention is to provide ahead light with a simple and practical means for moving lenses of different colors into and out of its light field for signaling purposes.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes my improved signaling device which is mounted in a casing 2 located upon the body or casing 3 of a head light. While this head light may be of any suitable form or construction and illuminated by gas, oil or electricity. the one illustrated in the drawing has a horizontally disposed cylindrical body mounted by means of brackets 4 upon a suitable base 5.
The casing 2 [or the signaling mechanism is, as shown, of elongated, elliptical form and extends vertically at the front end of the cylindrical body 3, just in rear of the front glass or lens 6 of the head light.
Mounted to swing vertically within the casing 2 and the front end oi the body or case 3 of the head light are one or more irames for holders carrying lenses of different colors adapted to be moved into and out of the light field or rays 01' light from the lamp. As shown, two of these lens holders 6 and 7 are provided, the former having a green glass or lens 8 and the latter a red one 9.
The holder or frame ti is formed at a suitable point with aradially extending arm 10, pivoted upon a shaft or pivot 11. mounted in bearing brackets 12 upon the interior of the casing 2. This arm has connected to it at 13 one end of a link 14 which latter has its opposite end pivoted to a long arm of a lever'15j The latter is pivoted intermediate its ends upon a fixed pivot I 16 within the casing and has its short end or arm connected to one end of a coil spring 17 also arranged in the casing 2 and having its opposite end secured therein as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
It will be seen that the spring 17 actuates the lever 15 so as to hold the lens holder or frame 6 normally elevated or in the upper portion of the casing 2 out of the field of light. Said frame or holder 6 is swung downwardly in the light field by a suitable operating rod 18 connected to one arm of a bell-crank 19 which is pivoted in a bracket 20 upon the base 5 and has its opposite arm connected to a link 21 which extends through a slot or opening in the side of the casing 2 and has its upper end connected to the pivot 13 of the with an arm 22 which is pivoted intermediate its ends upon the pivot or shaft 11 and has an end 23 extending through a slot in the casing 2. This end 23 of said arm is connected by a link 24 to one arm of a bell-crank 25 which latter has its opposite arm connected to an operating rod 26.
. By operating the rod 26, the lens frame or holder 7 which contains the red lens or glass may be either raised out of the light field or lowered into the same. This red lens holder 7 is held in its raised position by the tension of the connections by means of which it is operated, so that ii any of the pins or other parts of the connections give away the lens will fall into its operative position by its own weight. The operating rods 18, 26 may extend to any place from which it is desired to operate the signals. When the red light is used for marine purposes, the rods 18, 26 are preterably omitted and keys or knobs are provided upon the levers 19 and 25.
It will be understood that any number of the lens frames or holders may be provided and that the lenses may be of various colors. For railroad use, Ipreterably employ one white, one red, and one green lens and for marine purposes the three lenses just mentioned and in addition other colored lenses and one blank or blind one.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to with link 14. The other lens holder or frame 7 is also formed out departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent; is;
A headlight comprising a body, a casing projecting therefrom, a lens holder disposed transversely and having an arm pivotally mounted in said casing, a lever disposed transversely and pivoted intermediate its ends in said casing, a link connecting one end of said lever to said arm,
a spring connected to said casing and to the other end of said lever and serving to normally retain said lens holder out of the field of light, and an operating element connected to said arm to move said holder into the field of light against the tension of said spring. 7
