RAILVVAY-SIGNAL.
SPECIFCATION ormng part of Leers Patent No. 695,827, dated March 18, 1902. Applcation filed October 22, 1901. Serial No. 79,594. (No model) Be il; known that I, EDWARD MOMAHON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemnng and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefnl Improvements in Railway-Signals, of which the following is a specificaion, reference loeing had to the accompanyng drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This in vention relates to railroad signaling devices of the semaphore type in which a pivoted arm by its position wih relation to the supportingr-post indicates by day and a colored lantern by night whether Lhe switch 01 right of way controlled is opened or closed.
My invention more specifically has reference to means employed for rotating nhe lan tern through a qnarter-circle and bringing into view one or IJl1e other of the lenses, whch are placcd at an angle of ninet.y degrees 130 each other and consist of glasses of difi'erent colors.

A rod C, connected to the arm B behind the pivot, is employed for raisngand lowering thearm in the usual manner.

Integral with the plate D and bracket E is a horizontal tubular hearing G, through which passes a shaf; H, carrying the rocking lever I. This lever is preferably cast or formed With a hub at its center, through which the shaft I-I passes. An arm T extends upwardly from Fig. 3 represents a dethe opposite end of 11he hnb at a right angle to the lever I and earries a rollerj. Tl1 e two ends of the rocking, lever I are alike, which arrangement permits of the attachmen of the operatin sprod K to either end. If desired, a w'eighb may be attached to the lever t.o counterbalance the rod, as shown in Fig. 3.

In aetuating the device bun a small exertion of power is required, which aclvanta;ze is important in the use of eleetric signals.
I do not restrct myself to the exact details of consruetion, combination, and arrangement herein described, it being obvious that nin0r an(l unimportant departures therefrom not involving the exercse of inventi on may be made by the skilled mechanic, and such departnresfrom what is herein described and elamecl not involvng invention I eensider as wtl1in he scope and terms of my claims.
Ilaving Llms deseribecl my invention, I claim- 1. In a railway-signal, the combination of a horizont-ally-journaled roeking lever, an elbow-lever f0r snpporting a lantern or other sgnal and plvoted en a vertical axis, said elbow-lever being adapted to be turned through an are of ninety degrees by the direct contact of one arm of said rocking lever with the arms of the said elbow-lever, substantally as set forth.
2. In a railway-sgnal, the combnation of a horizontally-journaled rocking lever, a vertically-pivotecl elbow-lever adaptecl to be vibrated and held in any position within its limit of movement by the engagement of the arrn J of saicl roeking lever With the arm om er m of said elbow-lever, a lantern-bracket or other sgnalsupport adapted to be securecl to the elbow-lever at varying horizontal angles, and a support for t-he said levers, substantially as set forth.
3. In a railvvay-signal, the combnation of a horizontally-jonrnalecl rocking lever, a vertically-pivoted elbow-lever adapted te be vibrated by the rocking lever throngh anarc of ninety degrees, a stop for limiting the movement of the arms of the elbow-lever, a lanternbracket adaptecl to be seenred to the elbowlever at varying horizontal angles, and a support for the said levers, snbstantally as set forth.
4:. In a ralway-signal, tl1e combination of a rocking lever, en elbow-lever snpporting a lantern and having its axis at a right angle to the rocking lever, and an arm extendng from the rocking lever between the arms of the elbow-lever f0r moving said elbow-lever, substantially as set forth.
5. In a railway-signal, the eoxnbnaton of a rockng lever, an elbow-lever snpporting a lantern and havng its axis at a right angle to the r0cklng lever, a stop for limiting the moveme nt of the arms of the elbow-lever, and en arm extending from the roekng lever between tl1e arms of the elbow-lever for moving said elbovv-lever, substantially as set forth.
6. In a railway-signal, the combination of an uprght shaft, an elbow-lever attached therete, a lantern-support adjustably secured to the elbow-lever, a rocking lever horzontally journaled, a rocl attached to the roeking lever '0r impartng motion thereto, en arm extending from the roeking lever for turning it throngh an are of ninety degrees,and a bracket f0r supporting the severalparts, snbstantially as set forth.
7. In a railway-signal, the combnation of an npright shaft, an elbow-lever attached themto, a lantern-snpport acljustably seeured to the elhow-lever, a r0cking lever horizontally journaled, a 10d attached to the roeking lever f0r imparting motion thereto, an arm extendng from the roeking lever to the elbow-lever fox turning it througl1 an are of ninety (legrees, a stop for limitinp, t-he movement of the arms of the elbow-lever, and a braeket f0r supporting the several parts,substantially as set forth.
8. In a device for giving rotation to a lantern or other signal, tl1e cornbination of ahori zontally-journaled rockng lever, a vertically-jonrnaled elbow-lever, the latter carrying a lantern or sgnal, and the former being attaehed to the sou rce of power 01 moving element, and a stop f0r limiting the movement of the arms of the elbow-lever, substantially as set forth.
