To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VARREN S. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, inthe county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Signals, of
which the following-is a specification.
This invention rel-ates -to a signal for motor vehicles, the general object ofthe'invention being to provide ahan'd operated device which normally occupies a vertical position but when moved to a horizontal position will indicate that-the vehicle is to make a'turn or is to be stopped.
This invention also consists in certain other features of. construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illus-.
trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the SQXelill views,-an'd in which:

In these views 1 indicates a cylinder which is attached to any suitable part of a vehicle, such as shown at A, by the brackets 2. A dome 3 is attached to the upper part of the cylinder and the lower part is closed by a base 4. A rod 5 passes through the dome into the cylinder and clips 6 and 7 are at tached to said rod by set screws or the like. The clip 6 slides in a hole 8 formed in the base of the dome and has a slot 9 therein which receives an end of an arm 10 which carries at its outer end the lamp casing 11.

The arm is pivoted in the-slot by means ofa pin 12 and the slot is so formed that the arm can assume a horizontal position or a verticaleposition. Two sets of toggle links 13 pivota'lly connect the clip? with ears 14 on the base of the dome so that when these linksare moved to open or closed position the rod 5willbe moved vertically and as the clip-6 is fastened'to the-rod, said clip will move withtherod and as it-moves downwardly the arm 10 will'be tilted upwardly, its rounded'end passes into the opening 8 so tha-t said arm will be brought to a vertical position when the clip-and rod reach the limit of'the downward position. "l/Vhen the toggle links areopened up the clip6 will move upwardly and then the arm 1-0 will drop to a horizontal position.
In order to adjust the toggle linksa rod 15 has its forked end 16 pivoted to the links and its other end connected with a hand lever 17 which-is pivoted to a bracket 18 arranged within the body of the vehicle. Theconnection of the rod 15 with the lever is such that when the lever is initsupper position thelinks will bebrokenand'tlnis the arm will be in raised position, as shown in Figures 2 and 3. When the lever. is inits lowest position the links will be in extended position and then-the arm will be in horizontal position, asshown in Figure 4.
' In order to absorb the shock of the-falling arin'and-to help raise-the arm, I provide a spring 19 in the cylinder which engages a disk 20' on the-end of the rod 5 and has its upper end'bearing against a plate-21 in the cylinder-J As thearin drops the spring will be compressed so that when the arm is moved upwardly the spring will'tend to help lift the arm to its vertical position.
A lamp 22 is arranged in the casing 11 and one'ofthe conductors 23 of said lamp leads to a suitable source of supply, while the outer conductor is'attached to a spring just before the signal is given. By holding the hand lever in horizontal position and the contacts 27 and 26 in engagement with each other, the horn or other alarm will continue to sound.
The arm 10 is guided in its movement by means of a slot 28 formed in the dome 3 and the movable parts are enclosed by said dome, the rod 15 passing through a hole 29 made in the dome. I also prefer to form the dome in two parts so that access can be had to the interior thereof. 1 also prefer to make the casing 11 with transparent members in both faces so that the signal light can be'seen from the front as well as the rear.
From the foregoing it will be seen that l have provided a simple device for giving signals from a closed vehicle as well as an open one, it simply being necessary to swing downwardly the hand lever 17 in order to throw the signal arm 10 into horizontal position to indicate that the vehicle is to be 7 turned or stopped. After the turn has been conibination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims;
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A signal for a motor vehicle comprising a casing, a vertically movable rod therein, a bracket attached to the rod, a sig nal arm attached to the bracket, the upper part of the casing having a vertical slot through which the arm extends, a horizontal part in the casing having a hole therein through which the bracket moves, said horizontal part holding the arm in horizontal position when the bracket is in raised position and acting to move the arm into vertical position when the bracket is being lowered and a hand operated member for moving the rod.
2A signal for a motor vehicle comprising a casinghaving a dome shaped upper end with the base for the dome having an opening therein, a rod vertically movable in the casing, a bracket on the rod movable in the opening, said dome having a slot therein, a signal arm pivoted to the bracket and guided in its swinging movement upon the movement of the bracket by the slot and manually opearted means for moving the rod.
3. A signal for a motor vehicle comprising a casing having a dome shaped upper end with the base for the dome having an opening therein, a rod vertically movable in the casing, a bracket on the rod movable in the opening, said dome having a slot therein, a signal arm pivoted to the bracket and guided in its swinging movement upon the movement of the bracket by the slot, manually operated means for moving the rod, such means comprising a hand lever, toggle links connecting a part on the rod with the part on the base of the dome and a link connecting the hand lever with the toggle links.

A signal for a motor vehicle comprising a casing having a dome shaped upper'end .with the base for the dome having an open- .ing therein, a rod vertically movable in the casing, a bracket on the rod movable in the opening, said dome having a slot therein, a signal arm pivoted to the bracket and guided in its swinging movement upon the move ment of the bracket by the slot and manu ally operated means for moving the rod, and a spring for facilitating the downward movement of the rod and for cushioning the upward movement thereof.
5. A signal for a motor vehicle comprising a casing having a dome shaped upper end with an opening in the base of the dome, a vertically movable rod in the casing, a bracket on the rod and movable in the opening, said bracket having a slot therein and the dome having a slot therein, a signal arm having its inner end pivoted in the slot in'the bracket and the arm being guided by the slot in the dome, a clip fastened to the rod, toggle links'connecting the clip with a part of the base, a hand lever, a link connecting the same with the toggle links, spring means in the casing and connected with the rod for cushioning the downward movement of the signal arm. 1
