UNITE STATES GEORGE R. MUMFORD, OF DILLON, COLORADO.
ANIMAL-POKE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1907.
Application filed January I4, 1907. Serial No. 352,278.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. MUuFoRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dillon, in the county of Summit, State of Colorado, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Folies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to animal pokes generally and particularly to suoli as are designed to preventbreechy cattle from jumping, or forcing their way through, fences.
It is the purpose of providing improvements in animal pokes which include a halter with a device for engaging a fence or other means to obstruct the exercise of mischief.
The natureof the invention is to be ascertained from the annexed drawings forming a part of the specification, and which illustrate a form of the invention in view of which drawings the improvements will be described in detail with respect to the manner of their construction and use and then be pointed out in the subjoined claims.
Of the said drawingsvFigure l is a perspective view ot the invention showing it as applied to the head of a cow. Fig. 2 is a detached enlarged view of the halter and the improvements connected therewith.
Similar numerals of reference designate similar parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the drawings, 5 designates the nose-band; 6, the head-band, 7 the neck-band and Ll the throat-latch of a'halter sufficient for use in connection with my improvements, but which halter may be modified in construction so long as it subserves the purpose of properly supporting my said improvements as will be presently explained.
S designates a metal strap extending from a little below the nose-band 5 straight up the middle of the forehead and above the top of the head the projecting portion being formed into a hook 9.
The nose-band 5 and head-band 6 extend over the metal hook-strap S to keep it in place on the base strap, 3, on which it is adapted to slide longitudinally.
It is to be understood that neither the nose-band nor the head-band are fastened to the hook-strap 8. They merely extend over the latter in the nature of keepers ta maintain it in slidable positiony on the base strap 3.
I0 designates a lead-ring of common construction that is adapted to have its ends take into the nostrils and to be maintained in place therein.
The lower end of the metal strap 8 is formed so that a cord ll or other flexible means may be connected at one end therewith, the other end being connected with the ring l0.
l2 designates a metallic hook loosely connected with a ring 13, through which latter two portions of the throat-latch passat the point where the said elements meet below the jaw of the animal. l
The strap 3, which is wider than the metallic hookstrap 8, extends under the latter from the nose-band 5 over the head of the animal to the liead-band 7 as shown. i
Animals generally when they undertake to jump a fence first lay their head upon the top rail before they attempt a leap, and this being the case the hook l2 will catch into the rails or Wires and prevent the mischief. Should the animal wearing my improvedkpoke attempt to crawl through between the rails or try to break through other obstructions the hook 9 on the strap 8 will be likely to catch upon some part and draw on the nose-ring through its flexible connection ll, and by reason of the punishment inflicted by the ring cause it to desist.
The flexible connection 1l with the nose-ring and head strap 8 is an important feature of the improvements for the reasons stated.
What is claimed isv vAn animal poke comprising a halter including a throatlatch, a metallic strap supported on the forehead by the halter and having its upper end extended to project above the head, the projection terminating in a hook, a nosering und a flexible connection between the same and the lower end of the metallic strap, and a pendent hook hav ing a ring connecting it with the throat latch.
In testimony whereof, I afx my signature, in presence of two witnesses. A
GEORGE R. MUMFORD.
Witnesses .T W. Swsnniz, WALDO I. MUMFORD.
