Be it known that I, J OHN J. HESER, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVaco, in the county of York and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Calf-Weancr, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to calf-weaners.

The object of the invention is to present a calf-weaner which shall be thoroughly effective for the purpose designed and which in addition will operate as a poke to prevent the animal from thrusting its head under the wires or between the bars of a fence.

With these and other objects in View, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a calf-weaner, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated a form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit thereof, and in these drawings- Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a'calfs head, showing the weaner positioned thereon. Fig. 2 is a view in plan, on an enlarged scale, of a portion of the weaner. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 2, and looking in the direction of the arrow thereon. Fig. at is a similar view taken on the line 4; 4, Fig. 2, and looking in the direction of the arrow thereon.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a nose-strap, and 2 a neckstrap connected therewith and provided with a buckle 3 to permit requisite adjustment.

The weaner comprises in part two rods 4: and 5,Which are passed through openings provided in threeprods 6, 7, and 8, the prods 6 and 8 being disposed at the side of the wean er and approximately in line with the animals mouth and the prod 7 over its nose, each prod being providedpvith a member 9, bent at right angles to its length and secured to the nosestrap by rivets or .the like. The rods 4 and 5 are curved to conform to the animals nose, and their terminals are bent up against the two prods 6 and 8, as shown at 10 in Figs. 2 and 3, by which arrangement the rods will not only be held assembled with the prods, but lateral yielding of the latter will be positively prevented. The rods support two sets of prickers 11 and 12, the prickers 11 being rigid in character and being disposed at each side of the weaner and the prickers 12 being hinged to the bar 5 and adapted for swinging movement through a prescribed limit. The prickers llin this instance six in number are secured in place by having their inner terminals coiled around the rod 5 at 13 and their intermediate portions coiled around the rod 4 at 14, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The prickers 12 are secured in place by having their intermediate portions coiled about the rod 5 and their terminals diverged and straddling the rod 4, whereby they are adapted only for a limited range of upward-and-downward movement, the rod 4c serving to limit such movement, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 4. The prickers 12 are in this instance eight in number, four being disposed on each side of the center prod 7; but it is to be understood that this number may be increased or limited, as found necessary or desirable. The series of prickers 12, by reason of their pivotal association with the rod 5, will permit the animal to graze without interference, as the prickers will readily rock upon the said rod; but should it attempt to suckle, in the act of lifting its head the said prickers will drop down in front of the nose, and thus perform the function for which they are designed. Bytheprovisionofthehingedprickers the employment of a blab, such as is usually provided for the purpose, is dispensed with, and by reason of the disposition of the two series of prickersit will be apparent that when an animal has the device secured on its head any attempt to pass through a fence or thrustits head under the rails or wires thereof will be positively prevented.

In addition to performing the function of a weaner the device of this invention will be found highly effective in preventing cows from side suckling,

as the prods 6 and 8 will operate effectively to cure such habit.

A device of the character specified, comprising a nose-strap, side and center prods secured thereto, curved rods associated with the prods, fixed prickers arranged adjacent to the side prods, and having one terminal and their intermediate portions secured to the rod, and movable prickers disposed on each side of the center prod, and having their intermediate portions coiled about one of the rods and their terminals diverged and straddling the other rod.
