Know all mea by these presents ThatI, `WALTER WILBER, of New Salem, county of Franklin, and Commonwealth .of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe-Shaves 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,for'm ing a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved boot and shoe-shave.

Figure 2 represents a longitudinal Section of the same.

Figure 3 represents a perspective view of my improved boot and shoe-shave when madel in a somewhat different form. v

To enable those skilled in the art to which/my invention belongs, to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.

The nature of my invention consists, first, in the peculiar manner of securing the blade in place; second, in the peculiar construction and combination ofthe blade and guard-piece with the stock or handle of the shave.

A is the stock, or handle, made in this instance of iron, but may be made of any other metallic substance, or of wood.

Into this handle A, at its central part, is inserted a blade, B, the ends b and b of which are bevelled to fit into grooves c and o', as shown in lig.,v`2 of the drawings. y

At one end of the blade B is a-bolt, D, having in one side of its head a groove, c, which corresponds with the groove c in the handle A, into which lits one end, b, of the' blade B.

The bolt D passes through the handle A, and upon the end is a nut, f, that is slotted so it can be turned with a screw-driver.

By screwing up the nut f, the bolt D is drawn down, thereby pressing orgorowdiug the opposite end of the blade B firmly into the groove c', while at the same time the end, l, of the blade B, is held securely against the bottom of the groove c, at both sides of the bolt D. A

The blade B is made wider at one end,l), than at the other, b-, which brings the line of the edge diagonally across from one side to the other of the substance to be cut, instead of straight across.

In front of the blade B, and conforming to the edge thereof, is a guard-piece, C, which is made, as shown in the drawings, with the upper part so constructed as I- toslide in between the bevelled edges c and o of the handle A, while the dowmvard-projecting part O is litted to workin a recess out inV the edge of the handle A, where it is held by means of the screws m m, Which pass through slots inthe part G' of the guard-piece C, and by means of which arrangement the guard-piece C can be set up or down, to regulate the thickness of the shaving to be cut by the blade B.

The advantages to be gained, by making the form of the blade B, as described, are as follows:

First, it retains the edge 'in good condition longer than it would if straight across.

Second, it requires less force to use it.

Third, it is less liable to get clogged up with shav# ings. y

Fourth, it cuts smoothly, and will cut a thicker shaving without shaking. l

The shave, shown in figs. l and 2, is calculated to be used more particularly on the heels of boots and shoes, where a concave edge isrrequired, while that shown in iig. 3 is to bel used on the fore parts,where a square edge is desirable. It is' made essentially the same as the other, except, that instead of making the blade curved, it is perfectly dat, and is not as long.

There is also a projecting guide-piece, g, upon the handle, at one end of the blade B, which travels in the crease between the sole and upper ofthe boot, and pre Ven'ts the possibility of cutting the upper while at work. In other respects it is similar to the one described, t e blade B being made so that its edge runs diagonal y, and is retained in place by the bolt D and grooves in the handle at the ends of the blade. The shaving is also regulated in asimilar manner by the guard-'piece C.' By the foregoingl description it will be seen that I have constructed a boot and shoe-shave that does its work easier and better than the ordinary shave, is less liable to get out of order, and can be readily taken .apart for sharpening, thus greatly facilitating the operation of -trimming boots and shoes.

Having described my improved boot and shoe-shave,

The combination of the bolt D and nut f with the blade B and handle A, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
