Description

D. HARRINGTON.
Shave for Boots and Shoes.
PatentedAprH29,1873.
INVENTOR:
grrgfsssssmq/ AM, PHOTO-LITIIOGHAPHIC 00. A Y. {mam/51s Pnacass) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEXTER HARRINGTON, OF SOUTHBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHAVES FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 138,328, dated April 29, 1873 application filed March 31, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEXTER HARRINGTON,
of the town of Southbridge, county of Worcester and Commonwealth ofMassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaves, designed more especially for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represent a plan View of my improved shave. Fig. 2 represents a bottom view, and Figs. 3 and 4 represent views of opposite sides of the same.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it in detail.
In the drawing, the part marked A is the stock or main frame-piece, which holds the cuttin g-blade B between its upper jaw D and lower one 0, each of which has projecting rib-like pieces a c d d, the pieces 0 01 being joined at point e, and pieces 0 d at point e, from which points project spur-pieces E E, which, with arms 0 c d d, form handles for the shave. The middle portion of the stock A is curved out so as to conform to the shape of the cutter B, and the handles, at their ends, are curved slightly backward. Both the inner and lower margins of the upper jaw-piece D are slotted out; in the former case for the ready escape of the shavings, and in the latter so as to admitthe cutter is kept in position, which position is regulated by guide-pieces h h. Another set of screws, H H, pass through the ends of spurpieces E E, and keep the two jaw-pieces C and D in proper relative position.
As the knife or cutter B wears or is ground away, the jaws (J and D can be adjusted nearer together by means of the screws H H to keep the edge of the cutter at the proper relative position as respects the jaw 0.
It will thus be seen that, by the peculiar combination, with the jaws O D and spurpieces E E, of the screws G G and H H, substantially as shown in the drawing, the cutting-blade can be easily and accurately placed in position, and afterward adjusted, as it wears or is ground away, to cut any desired thickness of shaving, and that, too, in a most perfect manner. Then, again, it will be seen that the shave is not only light, but very strong, and, besides, is not liable to get out of order.
Having described my improved boot and shoe shave, what I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the jaw-pieces O D, arm or rib pieces 0 d c d, and spur-pieces E E, of the adjusting-screws G G and H H and cutter or shave B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. j
2. The combination, with the jaw-piece D, of the spur-pieces E E and holding-screws G G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
DEXTER HARRINGTON.
