APPLICATION FILED APRJZ, 1907.
WITNESSES: I INVENTOR I 1 ATTORNEY TYNTTET) PATENT FETCH HENRY C. CLARK, OF CHARLES CITY, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO JAMES M. BURNS,
ONE-THIRD TO IGNATIUS N. SNYDER, ONE-NINTH TO JOSEPH O. CAMPBELL, AND ONE- NINTII TO HENRY E. BROUILLARD, OF CHARLES CITY, IOWA.
WRE NCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. CLARK, residing at Charles City, in the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements '5 in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches. An object of my invention is to provide a wrench which will prove simple in construction and ellicient in operation, and will have a wide range of adjustment.
In the drawings illustrating the principle ol my invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure 'l. is a side view, Fig. 2a rear edge view and Fig. 3 a front edge view of my new' wrench; Fig. 4 is a sectional. detail of the movable jaw and the locking devices therefor; and Fig. 5 is a detail of the notches tor the movable jaw.
a is the shank of my new wrench provided with a jaw b. The shank a and jaw b constitute the stationary gripping jaw. The movable jaw c is formed at one end with an aperture (1, and to its other end is pivotally secured the link a, which connects that end with the locking latch f. The latter is adapted to travel along the rear edge of the shank (t and is formed with a nose o, adapted to engage in the serrations or grooves it, formed on the back ol the shank a. The movable jaw is provided at its gripping end with aserratcd lace i to enable it to grip the more lirmly the pipe j. The shank a. and jaw o are formed with similar serrations k for like purposes.
The inside or front edgeol' the shank a is provided with notches in, adapted to receive the tooth 'n, which is adapted to engage in one ot the notches m. As is clearly shown in Fig. 'l'these notches lie upon a curve by which construction and arrangement of parts the gripping lace i is carried away from the shank a, at the same time that the tooth n is carried away irom the jaw b, to provide for a larger sized pipe.
The jaw t is provided with claws 0, which adapt the device for use as a nail puller. The shank a is formed at one end with a hole p, through which a nail may be passed upon which to hang the wrench In using the wrench, the serrations 7c are brought against the article to be gripped; and the gripping face 45 i is placed in contact with the article and the tooth n is engaged with the nearest notch. The latch f, being when the la ti link tion
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
The nose g be- By moving the nose g of the locking latch f over the I claim:
1. In a wrench of the character described, the combination of a stationary jaw formed with grooves; a movable jaw free to swing about one end, said end being free to be engaged with said stationary jaw at dilferent points along the same; a locking latch one end of which is formed with a nose which is adapted to engage in said grooves and the other end 01' which is adapted to be grasped by the operator to swing the latch; and a link -which connects said latch and movable jaw, the swinging of said latch serving to move said jaws towards each other.
serrations h, the movable jaw 0 may be swung about the tooth n, so that the movable jaw may be adjusted for different sizes of pipe or bolt while the teeth a remains in the same notch m.
2. In a wrench oi the character described, the combina tion of a stationary jaw formed with notches; a movable jaw formed with a tooth adapted to engage in said notches. said movable jaw being adapted to swing about said tooth is engaged in one of said notches a link one end of which is pivotally secured to said movable jaw; and a latch pivotally mounted in the other end of said and adapted to engage with said stationary jaw to lock said movable jaw in gripping position.
I). In a wrench of the character described, the combinaof a stationary jaw one edge of which is formed with grooves and the other edge of which is formed with notches; a movable jaw one end of which is formed with a tooth and the other end of which is formed with a gripping i'aee, said tooth being adapted to engage in said notches; a locking latch provided with a nose adapted to engage in said grooves; and a link connecting said movable jaw and locking latch? 4. In a wrench of the character described, the combination of a stationary jaw formed with notches arranged upon a curve; a movable jawiormed to engage with said notches; a locking latch adapted to engage said stationary jaw; and a link connecting said latch and movable jaw.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the y this Sth day of April, 1907.
Witnesses W. B. KLINnTor, E. E. HERING.
