The machine comprises a frame 1]. which can be conveniently made of pipe as illustrated in the drawings and of any desired size. X carriage 12 is arranged to travel from end to end of the frame and is provided with grooved wheels 13 which travel on rails 14 sup- A main shaft 15 is journaled in bearings in the frame and carries a pinion 16 which meshes with a rack 17 on the underside of the carriage, whereby. the carriage is moved back and forth inthe frame. At or about the middle of the frame, and on each side thereof, are uprights 18 on which the bearing blocks 19 are rigidly mounted and the bearing blocks 20 are slidably mounted. A transfer roller 21 is mount-- ed on a shaft 22 journaled in hearings in said bearingblocks 20 and this shaft carries a bevel gear 23 which meshes with a bevel pinion 24 on an upright shaft 25 which is supported in a bracket 26 on the bearing block I 2Q and in brackets 27 on the bearing block 19 (Figs. 3,
4). The shaft 25 is movable vertically with the movion 28 is fastened on said shaft between the brackets 27 by afeather 29 and meshes with a bevel pinion 30 on the main shaft 15. The bearing blocks 19 and :20 on each side'of the machine are connected by toggle links 3] which are pivoted together at 32 and at 32 to said blocks.
An ink roller 33 is supported by swinging arms 34 which are loosely mounted on theshaft 22 and this ink roller receives ink from a feed roller 35 which operates in engagement with a roller 36 operating in an ink pot 37. I prefer to make the ink roller 33 like an ordinary printing inkroller. the roller 35 of similar character and the roller 36 of steel.
A benzin roller 38 is carried by a frame 39 mounted in bracket arms 40 on the movable blocks 20 so that it can be swung from the position shown in Fig. 1 with the benzin roller in the tank 41 to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 3 with the benzin roller resting upon the transfer roller 21. supported on themain frame of the machine and contains a supply of benzin or other cleaning material, a supply of which is carried by the roller 38 on to the transfer roller for cleaning the latter. A roller 42 is mounted on a shaft 43 carried by arms 39. mounted on shaft 47 and said shaft 43 carries a pinion 44 which meshes with a pinion 45 also mounted on the frame-39. The pinion 45 meshes with a pinion 46 on a shaft 47 supported on the frame 39 and carrying also a sprocket wheel 48. A sprocket chain 49 travels on the. sprocket wheel 48 and on a sprocket wheel 50 on the transfer roller shaft 22. Thus the roller 42 is revolved to operate as a scraper on the transfer roller-during the cleaning operation.
The main shaft 15 carries a loose pulley 51 and two tight pulleys 52 to receive two belts, one of. which 53 is straight and the other 54 is crossed. A belt shifter 55 is suitably engaged with these belts and is carried by an arm 56 pivotally mounted at 57 on oneo f the movable bearing blocks 20. A link 58 is pivotally connected at 59 to the stationary bearing block 19 and at.
' 60 to the arm 56 (Fig. 4), whereby the belts are shifted on the pulleys to reverse the movement of the carriage as the transfer roller is elevated and lowered. l
A scraper blade 61 (Figs, 3,8, 9. 10) is securely held between plates 62 and 63 bolted together and the latter The tank 41 is suitably rest in end guides 64 mounted on the main frame and adjustable longitudinally thereof. The scraper may be variously constructed but I have'illustrated it as operating by gravity to engage the master board hereafter referred to. The carriage is provided with'tracks 65 which slide under the lower ends 34 of the arms 34 and under the plates 62 and 63 of the scraper device between the scraper blade and the end guides 64. These tracks are elevated at 65 at the right hand end of the carriage. A drip pan 66 is provided on the carriageto receive the drippings from the scraper.
In practice the ink pot is provided with a supply of ink and the benzin tank with asupply of benzin and amaster board 67, from which the design is taken, is arranged on the table and is alined with aboard 68 on which thedesign is to be printed. The machine is started and the carriage travels to the left (Fig. 1) carrying the master board under, the ink roller, the scraper and the transfer ,roller. The ink roller applies ink to the master board, rolling it into the grain thereof and the scraper resting on the board removes surplus ink from the face of the board so that the transfer roller will receive a transfer in ink of the design of the grain of the master board. As the carriage carries the master board forward from beneath the ink roller the arms 34, carrying said roller, will ride up the inclines 65 on tothe elevated tracks 65 so that the ink roll'er will be held above and out of engagement with the board 68. 'The scraper.
, likewise rides up on the elevated track 65 and is held out of engagement with the board 68. The carriage, then carries the board 68 beneath the transfer roller which prints the design of the grain of the master board thereon. During the movement of the carriage from right to left the transfer roller is in its lowered position (Fig. 1) but as the carriage reaches the limit of its movement from right to left stops'69 on the right hand end of the carriage engage the toggle links and push them from broken position (Fig. 1) to straight position (Fig.
2 thereby raising the bearing blocks 20 and elevating the transfer roller. Thus,the belt shifter arm 56 is operated to shift the belt and reverse 'the direction of movement of the carriage. When the carriage reaches the limit of its movement from left to right stops 70 on the left hand end of the carriage engage the ggle links and move them from the straight position (Fig. 2) to broken position (Fig. 1), thereby lowering the transfer roller into operative position. It will be apparent that the same design may be printed on as many different boards as desired orthe master'board may be changed as frequently as desired, and that more than one master board may be used at a time, lying side by side on the table. When it is desired to cleanthetransfer roller the frame 39 is swung from the position shown in Fig. 1
'to the position shown in Fig. 2 carrying the benzin roller 38 from the benzin. tank 41 into engagement with the transfer roller. The benzin roller applies benzin to the transfer roller so that the ink thereon may be readily wiped off by the roller 42.
The machine is simple in construction and operates easily and Without requiring skilled attention; It will print the grain design'of one board on another, such as the designof a quarter sawed board on aplain sawed, board, or the design of a ry board having a grain upon a board without a grain, or a grain which isnot plain or prominent. Thus a board maybe made to imitate and present the appearance of the grain design of another board and by varnishing and polishing properly it can be made practically indistinguishable in appearance from the master board which it represents.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent said rollers, and means for automatically moving the ink roller and scraper out of operative position after ,the m'aister board has passed thereby, substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the character described; the combination of a frame, a reciprocating carriage to carry-a master board and a board to be printed, said boards being arranged end to end on the carriage with the master board in front, an ink roller for applying ink to the master board, a. transfer roller for receiving an impression from the master 'board and applying it on the other board, a scraper for automatically lifting the ink roller and the scraper out of operative position after the master board has passed thereby, and means for lifting the transfer roller out of operative position after it has operated on the board to be printed and before the carriage begins its return movement.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, a pair of swinging arms, an ink roller .supported on said, arms, a transfer roller, 2. scraper between said rollers, a movable carriage to carry a master -.board and a board to be printed successively beneath the 'inkroller, the scraper and the transfer roller and tracks on said carriage on which the free ends of said arms and the scraper rest, said tracks having inclines and being elevated adjacent to the board to be printed, whereby the ink roller and the scraper are moved out of operative position after they haveoperated on the master board.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, a gravity ink roller, 9. transfer roller, a gravity scraper between said rollers, a movable carriage to carry a master board and a board to be printed successively beneath the ink roller, the scraper and the trans- -fer roller, stops at the ends of said carriage, and means operated by said stops to move the transfer roller into and out of operative position.
5. In a machine of the character described, the'combination of a frame, an ink roller, 11 scraper, vertically movable bearing blocks on the frame, a transfer roller journaled in said bearing blocks, toggle links pivotally connected to said bearing blocks and to a fixed part ofthe frame, a movable carriage to carry a master board and a board to be'printed successively beneath the ink roller, the scraper and the transfer roller, and stopsat each end of the carriage to engage and operate said toggle links.
