STBIPING MACHINE.

This invention relates to machines for striping buckets, tubs and the like with p amt or ink; and the objectof the mvention 1s to provide a machine which will place unlform stripes upon the buckets andthe hke; the machine being adapted to produce str1pes of ditt'crent colors in a single operation; lmeans being provided for forming breaks 1n the stripes to accomn'iodate handles or other protruding parts upon thc surtace to be striped; the machine being designed to strlpe elliptlcal or irregular shaped articles such as coal buckets and the like as well as circular larticles: means being vprovided for rotating the article to be striped and the striplng rolls in unison to accomplish certain o these results; inking and distributing rolls being provided and rotated at the same peripheral speed as the striping rolls.
An embodiment of the invention .1s 1llu s trated in the accompanying drawings, 1n which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved machine showing a bucket mounted therein for striping;
Fig. 2, a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3, a side elevation of the machine;
Fig. 4, a diagrammatic end elevation showing the machine constructed to place broken stripes around a "tub or the like provided with handles or other protruding portions;
Fig. 5, a fragmentary plan view of the same, and
Figs. 6 and 7 are an end elevation and plan respectively of striping rolls adapted for striping an irregular shaped article such as a coal bucket.

The machine may comprise a bed 1 supported upon suitable end frames 2 and having a head stock 3 at one end, supporting a journal bearing 4, and a bifurcated tail stock 5 lat the other end. provided with the spaced bearings 6. alincd With the bearing 4.
A shaft 7 is journaled in the bearing 4, and
carries the rotatable chuck 8, adapted to re ceive the open en'd of the bucket, or the like, indicated at 9, attaching clips 10 being provided upon the chuck for receiving the handle ears 11 to cause the bucket to rotate therewith.
A gear housing 12 is carried by the head stock 3, and suitable worm gearing locatedtherein and operatively connected to the 1926. Serial No. 120,890.
A shaft 15 is slidably and rotatably mounted in the bearings 6, of the tail stock, and 30 carries the block 16 at its inner end, arranged to be moved into engagement with the bottom end of the bucket, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
An annular lever 17 is pivote'd, as at 18, upon the bed 1 and engages a collar 19, upon 55 the shaft 15, said lever having a treadle por tion 20, at its lower end, for moving the shaft l5 longitudinally. This treadle may be counterweighted, as shown at 21, to assist in moving the shaft to the inoperative position.
A sprocket wheel 22 may be rovided, upon the outer end of the shaft 7, ihr driving the iuking and striping rolls. For the purpose of supporting the inking rolls, and supplying ink or paint thereto, a tank 23 is located adjacent to the bed plate and may be sup ported as upon the arm 24.
For the purpose of providing for simultaneously striping the bucket with two or more colors, at the same time, this tank may be divided into compartments, by one or more partition walls 25. In order to provide for striping buckets, or other receptacles, of different shapes or varying tapers this tank is mounted for angular adjustment upon the supportmg arm 24.-
A shaft 26 is journaled through the tank and provided with two or more rollers 27, cor responding in number with the number of stripes to be placed upon the bucket. In the event that it is desired to usel more than one color for striping the bucket, each'compartment of the trough contains a dierent color, thus supplying one color to each of the c5 rolls 27.
The roll shaft 26 is driven by means of a universally jointed shaft 28, connected to ythe shaft 26 and to a short shaft 29 journaled 1n a bearing 30 upon the arm 31, supported 100 from the bed 1.
A sprocket Wheel 32 is fixed upon this short shaft 29 and connected, as by the chain 33, with the sprocket Wheel 22 upon the shaft 7.
g Uprights 34 are located at the ends of the 105 ink trough, and provided with the vertical guide grooves 35 in which are located the bearing blocks 36. Rolls 37 and 38 are journaled in said bearing blocks, each of said rolls being preferably provided with a peripheral covering 39, of soft rubber or the like. Screws 40 may be provided for adjusting the upper bearings 36 to place the desired pressure upon the inking rolls.
The striping rolls 41 are carried upon a shaft 42, mounted in a swinging bracket arm 43, hinged as at 44 to the uprights 34 or other suitable portion of the machine and arranged to be moved alternately into contact with the upper inking rolls 38 and with the bucket 9 or other article to be striped.
The striping rolls are arranged to be positively driven in unison with the bucket or other article to be striped by means of chain gearing such as the sprocket chain 45 connecting the sprocket 46, upon the shaft 55,
with the sprocket 47 upon the shaft 48, a
sprocket 49, also mounted upon said shaft,
being connected, as by the chain 50 with the sprocket 51 upon the striping roll shaft 42.
The frame 43 is arranged to be manually l tilted, by the operator, by means of the handle 52 Whichextends forward over the table into a position Where it may be conveniently inking rolls 38 and the lower rolls 27 and driving said rolls in unison with the striping rolls, a more even and uniform distribution of the ink or paint is obtained, thus providing for a more uniform and even striping of the buckets.
For this purpose a series of intermeshing gears 53 is provided upon the shafts 26, 55 and 56 of the rolls 27, 37 and 38 respectively.
As shown inFigs. 4 and 5, one or more of the striping rolls may be provided with cutout portions as at 57, to accommodate protruding portions, such for instance as the handles 58, upon the tub 9 or other article to be striped; and as best shown in Fig. 5 any suitable form of decoration may be applied to the tub or other article by providing a roller such as shown at 41a having the desired configuration thereon.
It should be understood that the striping rolls as Well as the inking rolls, arev preferably provided With peripheral coverings of rubber or the like as shown at 59 and it will be seen that the striping rolls vary in diamekthe coal bucket.
I claim: Y v 1. A striping machine for striping a noncircular article having an angular edge portion, including means for rotating the article, a non-circular striping roll'having a nonv circular striping surface arranged to engage the surface of the article and having-its edge portion curved to follow the angular edge of the article and means for positively rotating the roll in unison With lthe article to be striped.
2. A striping machine including an ink' trough, a distributing roll cooperating therewith, an 1nk1ng roll contactlng with the distributing roll, means for rotating an article to be striped, a striping roll, means for rotating all of said rolls, and means for alternately contacting the striping roll with the inking roll and with the article to be striped.
3. A striping machine including an inking roll, means for rotating an article to be striped, a pivoted arm, a striping roll carried by the arm, means for rotating said rolls, and means for swinging said arm upon its pivot to Contact the striping roll alternately with the inking roll and with the article to be striped.
