UNEEEU flllAfiES PATENT FFIGE.
JAMES P. ATHERTON AND CHARLES E. RICE, OF LIVERMORE, KENTUCKY.
TOBACCO-KILLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application med August a, 1907. $erial No. 387,717.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMEs P. A'ri-rnn'ron and GHA RLES E. RICE, citizens of the United States, resident of Livermore, in the county of McLean and- State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Inis a detail \dew of one of the scraper blades and its car rying arms.
The invention has relation to improvements in tobacco hillers to form the hills or ridges and pack the dirt in the same, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letters a, a, designate the parallel supporting frame bars at each side of the machine. b, is a guide wheel at the front of the machine having its axle 1), extended horizontally at each side and provided with journal bearings y in the frame bars a, a. c, is a roller or packing wheel at the rear, of similar diameter to that of the wheel I), and having its axle 0, also extended horizontally at each side and provided with journal bearings 10 in the bars a, a. The frame bars are thus connected and braced at front and rear by the axles of the wheels 12, and c, and as the wheels have similar diameters the frame bars are horizontal.
Intermediately of the wheels I), and c, are hinged to the frame bars at each side two downward and rearward extending arms d, d, carrying at their lower ends the scraper blades c, e, which have a converging relation to each other to gather the dirt into a hill or ridge. The scraper blade carrying arms d, d, are connected together by a brace rod f and are provided each with a lever adjustment device 9, fulcrumed to the frame bars a, a, at g, and having link connections g", with the arms, whereby such arms and the scraper blades carried thereby may be adjusted to any height desired. In order that the scraper blades may be at the same time adjusted to the proper angle with relation to the ground, the arms (I, d, have arcuate slots (1, at their lower end portions through which pass the attachment bolts (Z for such blades. In practice the packing wheel or roll at the rear is made a little smaller than the front or guide wheel, in order that it may ride upon the ridge or hill.
A draft link h, is connected to the frame bars at the front and extends forward at each side and in front of the guide wheel.
Having described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tobacco hiller including a front guide wheel, a rear packing wheel having a broad tread, a frame bar at each side carried upon the axles of such wheels, downward and rearward extending arms hinged to such frame bars and carrying at their lower end portions converging scraper blades located between the front and rear wheels, means for adjusting the height of said arms, and means for ad justing the angle of the scraper blades with relation to the ground.
2. A tobacco hiller including a front guide wheel, a rear packing wheel of similar diameter having a broad tread, a frame bar at each side carried upon the axles of such wheels, downward and rearward extending arms hinged to the frame bars and provided with arcuate slots at their lower end portions, adjustable scraper blades having at tachnicnt bolts engaging such slots, and a lever device for adjusting such arms and having link connection therewith hinged to one of said frame bars.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
