COTTON CHOPPER AND SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,864, dated July 5. 1887.
Application filed April 12, 1887. Serial No. 234.538. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL JAMES House, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gotton Choppers and Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in cotton choppers and scrapers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices,that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cotton-chopper embodying my improvements, with the near wheel removed. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on line as m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is arear elevation. Fig. 5 isadetail perspective of the chopping-hoe.
A rep resents an axle. B represents the supporting-wheelsjournaled on the spindles of the axle; and 0 represents a large spur-wheel, which is secured to the inner end of the hub of one of the wheels B, and is adapted to rotate therewith.
D represents the tongue, which is attached to the center of the axle and extends forward therefrom; and E represents the hounds,whic h are bolted at their front ends to opposite sides of the tongue and have their rear ends projecting a suitable distance beyond the rear side of the axle. From the under side of the axle depend a pair of vertical standards, G, in the lower ends of which is journaled a horizontal shaft, H, which is parallel with the axle. To the inner end of this shaft is rigidly secured a miter gear-wheel, I, and to the outer end thereof is rigidlysecured a pinion, K,which meshes with the wheel G.
L represents a pair of vertical standards, which depend from the under side of the tongue. In the lower ends of thesestandards is jour- 'nal ed a horizontal longitudinal shaft, M, which is provided at its rear end with a miter-pinion, N, that meshes with the miter-wheel I.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that when the machine is drawn forward rotary motionwill be transmitted from the wheel C to the shaft' H, and from the latter to the shaft M.
0 represents a pair of arms, which project from one side of the shaft M. These arms are provided with longitudinal slots P.
R represents a chopping-hoe, which is of the u form shown in Fig. 5, and is provided at its extremities with the upturned arms S, that bear against the opposing inner side of the arms 0, and have projecting bolts T, that extend through the slots P. On the outer ends of the bolts T are screwed clamping-nuts U, which bear against the outer sides of the arms 0, and thereby secure the chopping-hoe to the said arms at any desired adjustment from the shaft M.
To the front ends of the hounds,on the outer sides thereof, are secured the upper ends of forwardlyinclined depending standards V. To the lower ends of these standards, on the front sides thereof, are bolted laterally-projectingscraping-wingsW. Itwillbeobserved by reference to Fig. 2 that a space is left between the inner ends of the scrapers,to permit the latter to pass on opposite sides of the ro of cotton-plants.
X represents a pair of standards,which are hinged to the outer rear ends of the tongue and are adapted to swing laterally toward and from each other. These standards are connected together by a coiled retractile spring, Y, and they are provided on their inner opposing sides with projecting pegs or stirrups Z. To the lower ends of the standards X are secured cultivatingshovels A.
B represents handles,which are attached to the standards X near their lower ends, and project rearwardly from the said standards to enable the cultivating-shovels to be directed by a plowman walking in rear of the machine.
0 represents a seat for the driver. The said seat is supported on a rearwardly-inclined arm, D, that is secured to the rear portion of the tongue.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The driver, seated upon the seat O,places his feet upon the stirrups or pegs Z, and is thereby enabled to move the cultivating-shovels lat erally, so as to direct the same when the machine is in operation. As the machine advances, being directed so that the scrapers work on opposite sides of a row of cottonplants, the hoe, which is rotated by the shaft M, is caused to chop out the plants, thereby leaving stands at equal distances apart.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, in a cotton-chopping machine, of the rotating shaft M, the arms 0, projecting from one side thereof at right angles thereto, and having the longitudinal slots arms bearing against the inner sides of the arms 0, and the clamping bolts extending through the arms of the hoe and through the slots in the arms 0, to secure the chopping-hoe at any desired adjustment with relation to the shaft M, substantially as described.
2. In a cotton chopper and scraper, the combination,with the frame, of the gear-Wheel G, the hanger G, depending from the axle, the transverse shaft H, having the gear-wheel K and the miter-wheel I, the hangers L, depending from the tongue, the longitudinal shaft M, having the miter-pinion Nand the slotted arms 7 O, and the chopping-bar R, having the arms 25 S, adjustable upon the-arms of the shaft, substantially as described.
