Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 19, 1907.

Serial No. 407,141.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. CLAIBORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guineys, in the county of Caroline and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and a land roller having a series of rollers so arranged and constructed that it will adjust itself to uneven ground and thus thoroughly roll all the ground over which it passes.
Another object of my invention is to provide a roller of this character which is selfadjusting and more simple in structure and operation.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved roller; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View; Fig. 3 1s a transverse vertical sectional view showing the adjusting means. Fig. 4: is an enlarged vertical sectional View taken on the line w-w Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line y-y of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a rectangular metal frame which is preferably made of L-beams bolted together or formed in a single piece, as desired. The said metal frame is composed of front beams 2, a rear beam 3 and the end beams 41 and 5. Secured to the center of the end beams 41 and 5 and extending longitudinally of the frame 1 is a beam 6 secured to the end beams by bolts 7. Extending transversely from the front beam 2 to the beam (3 are beams 8 which divide the space between the end plates 4 and 5 into three equal spaces. The lower faces of the beams 8 are provided with journals 9, in which journals the shafts 10 and 11 of the rollers 12 and 13. The opposite ends of the shafts journal in bearings 14 carried by the end beams 4 and 5. By this construction, it will be seen that the front portion of the frame 1 is provided with two parallel rollers extending in the same plane. Connected to the rear face of the beam 6 are transverse beams 15 and 16, which have their ends connected to the rear beam 3. Carried by the lower faces of the beams 15 and 16 are journals 17, in which is mounted the shaft 18 of the roller 19. This roller, as will be seen, is so positioned that it straddles the space between the rollers 12 and 13.
Carried by the front and rear beams 2 and 3 are two semicircular plates 20 and 21 which extend a considerable distance above the front and rear beams 2 and 3. Connected to the said plates, and rigidly carried thereby, are transverse bars22 and 23 which extend in a horizontal plane and are provided at the center with openings 24;. Mounted in the said openings 24, and extending longitudinally of the frame, is a shaft 25 which carries a frame or platform 26 which is made either of metal or wood, as desired. Extending transversely of the said platform is a pole or tongue 27, which is secured to the said latform by means of brackets 28. The p0 e extends forwardly, as indicated at 29. By the construction set forth, it will be seen that the pole and the platform 26 rock upon the shaft 25 independently of the roller frame 1, and thus any unevenness of the ground is not imparted to the pole.
The pole 27, at one side, directly over the shaft 25, is provided with upwardly extending brackets 30, in which is mounted a shaft 33 upon which is journaled a s rocket wheel 31. The side of the pole 27, irectly over the front and rear beams 2 and 3, is provided with small sprocket wheels 32 and 33. Secured to the front beam 2 is a sprocket chain 34, which passes vertically upwardly over the sprocket wheel 32 and the sprocket wheel 31 and downwardly over the sprocket wheel 33 and is secured to the rear beam 3 of the frame 1. Mounted upon the shaft 33 is a lever 35 which extends upwardly in easy reach of the operator. The lower end of the lever 35 extends below the sprocket wheel 31 and carries onits inner side a plate 37, which is provided on its up per and lower faces with teeth 38. The upper teeth of this plate are adapted to mesh with the teeth of the circular rack 31 carried by he sprocket wheel 31. The lower teeth of the plate mesh with a segmental rack 31 carried by the upper face of the platform 26. The plate 37 1s vertically movable on the lower end of the lever 35 and is normally held in its downward position by a spring 39, and is adapted to be drawn upwardly against the tension of the spring by a rod 10, operated by the hand lever 11 carried by the lever 35.
The operation of the device is as follows: The plate 37 is normally held in its down ward position in engagement with the segmental rack and allows the free rotation of the sprocket 31 on the shaft 33, and thus the frame 1 is free to rock upon the shaft'or pivots 24:, and causes the rollers to adjust themselves to the unevenness of the ground. By operating the lever 41 the plate 31 is drawn upward out of engagement with the segmental rack 31 and into engagement with the circular rack 31, and thus the sprocket Wheel is locked to the lever, so that the frame 1 can be rocked upon the operation of the lever.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by L tt rs Patent is:
1. A land roller comprising a roller carrying frame, rollers carried thereby, a pole carrying frame pivotally mounted upon the roller frame, a sprocket wheel carried by the pole frame, a chain having its free ends secured to the roller frame and passing over the sprocket wheel, and means for operating said sprocket wheel,

A land roller-comprising a roller carrying frame, rollers carried by the said frame, upwardly extending arch plates carried by the roller frame, a shaft rotatably supported by the arch-shaped plates, a pole carrying frame rigidly secured to the said shaft, a pole carried by the said frame, a large sprocket wheel carried by the pole carrying frame, a small sprocket wheel carried by the side of the pole on each side of the first mentioned large sprocket wheel, a chain hav-. ing its. free ends secured to the roller frame and passing over the small and the large sprocket wheels, a lever pivotally mounted upon the pole carrying frame, and means for locking the sprocket wheel to the lever.
4. A land roller comprising a roller carrying frame, rollers carried by the said frame, upwardly extending arch-shaped plates carried by the roller frame, a shaft rotatably supported by the arch-shaped plates, a pole carrying frame rigidly secured to the said shaft, a pole carried by the said frame, a large sprocket wheel carried by the side of the said pole, a small sprocket wheel carried by the side of the pole on each side of the first mentioned large sprocket wheel, a chain having its free ends secured to the roller frame and passing over the large and small sprocket wheels, a lever pivotally mounted upon the pole carrying frame and having its lower end extending below the sprocket wheel, a plate slidably mounted upon the lower end of the lever and normally held in a downward position, teeth carried by the upper and lower edges of the plate, a rack bar carried by the pole frame below the plate and adapted to be engaged by the lower teeth thereof, the upper teeth adapted to engage the large sprocket wheel, a rod connected to the plate and extending upwardly and connected to a lever carried by the sprocket operating lever, whereby the plate is either locked to the rack or to the sprocket wheel.
5. A land roller comprising a roller carrying frame, rollers carried by the said frame, upward-1y extending arch-plates carried by the roller frame, horizontal bars carried by the arch-shaped plates, a pole carrying frame pivotally supported by the horizontal bars, a pole carried by the said frame, a sprocket wheel carried by the side of the said pole, a chain having its free ends secured to the roller frame and passing over the sprocket wheel, a lever pivotally mounted upon the pole carrying frame, a segmental rack carried by the pole frame below the sprocket wheel, a pinion carried by the sprocket wheel, a vertically movable member carried by the lever and adapted to engage either the rack or the pinion, substantially as described.
