GEORGE IVASHINGTON MILLER, OF INDIAN ORCHARD, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED ROAD SCRAPER AND ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,336, dated. October 24, 1899. Application filed August 10, 1899. Serial No- 726,760. (No model.)
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indian Orchard, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Combined Road Scraper and Roller, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to road-scrapers, and has for its object to simplifyand improve this class of machines.
With this object in view myinvention consists of an axle on which are mounted two rearwardly-projecting beams, downwardly-extending guides on said beams, a scraper operatively mounted in said guides, and a roller connected to the beams in rear of the scraper and means for adjusting the scraper with relation to the roller.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be fully described in the following description, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which the figure represents a perspective view of the scraper and roller as it will appear ready for use.
Referring now to the drawing by referencenumerals, 2 indicates the axle, on which are journaled the wheels 3 and 4:. 5 are brackets on the said axles and provided with the horizontal flanges 6, to which are fastened by suitable bolts two rearwardly-projecting beams 7 and 8, to the forward ends of which are secured the tongue 9 and draft-equalizer 10. Immediately above the axle and positioned on the beams is a suitable weighted box or receptacle to add weight to the machine.
Projecting from near the ends of the beams are two downwardly-extending guide-arms 11 and 12, secured thereto and braced by the A slight distance beyond the guidearms 11 and 12 are two parallel arms 14 and 15, similarly arranged, havin g each an upward extension 16, to which is pivoted a hand-lever 17, working in a rack 18, and at the forward end of which is provided a rod 19, carryin g the scraper 20, designed to work up and down in the slots 21, formed by the guidearms 11 and 12 and 14 and 15.
22 and 23 are two rearwardly-extending braces having a bottom 24 connecting.them,on which a seat 25 is secured, and secured to the under side of these braces is a transverse beam 26, carrying at each end a rearwardlyextending beam 27, the rear end of which is also secured to the braces 24: by a rod 28.
29 isa roller journaled in the bearings 30, carried by the beam 27.
It will be noticed that the seat is positioned immediately behind and intermediate the hand-levers 17 and by this construction the scraper can be readily adjusted vertically with relation to the roller or when the machine is not in use can be raised entirely off the ground.
From the foregoing the operation will readily be seen, and while I have described the Very best means at my command for accomplishing the desired result I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact details of construction, but reserve the right to make such slight changes and alterations as would properly come within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. In a road scraper and roller, the combination with an axle, of two rearwardly-extending beams secured thereon, downwardlyprojecting parallel guide-armssecured to the rear end of said beams, a Vertically-adjust able scraper in said guides, and a roller secured to the beams, substantiall y as described.
2. In a road scraper and roller, the combination with traction-wheels and axle upon which they are mounted, of two rearwardlyextending beams, carrying vertical guides, at their rear ends, a hand-lever, a verticallyadjustable scraper secured thereto and working in said guides, a rearwardly-extending beam projecting from the guides and a roller connected thereto, substantially as described.
In a road scraper and roller, the combi nation with the traction-wheels and the axle upon which they are mounted, of the rearwardly-projecting beams, guide-arms extending therefrom, a vertically-adj ustable scraperboard working therebetween, braces extending from said arms, a transverse beam secured thereon and carrying a roller-bearing beam at each end, substantially as described.
GEORGE WASHINGTON MILLER.
