*rTeD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA MOORE, OF MARSEILLES, ILLINOIS.
i ROAD-GRADING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,691'I dated December 13, 1887.
Application filed March 17, 1887. Serial No. 231,259. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Marseilles, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Road Grading Machines, of which the following is a specitication.
'This invention is designed to give increased strength and convenience ofoperation to roadgrading machines of the class shown in the patent to me, No. 345,315, of July 13, 18,86.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is aperspective View of my improved Fig. 2 is a plan of the machine. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the fifth-wheel on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan of the axle and the pole at their junction. Fig. 5 isa section on line 5 501" Fig. 4. Fig. 6 isacrosssection of the axle, showing also a side view ot' the pole attachment. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 2. Fig. 8 illustrates the manner of connecting the hand-lever with the front end. ofthe scraper; and Fig. 9 is a plan of the rear end of the beams, showing the manner of bracing the scraper. All the `igures after Fig. 2 are considerably enlarged,
In the drawings, A A"represent the two arched .beams extending from the front axle to the rear of the machine. nected by a suitable number of crossbraces, a, and at the front by the head a'. I am aware that these beams have each been made in one piece; but I prefer to make the two beams, together with their cross-connections, in oneintegral or homogeneous piece. This may be done by casting them together at one operation. The cross-braces may, however,if preferred, be previously formed and cast into the stock of the beams at either end of the braces in the usual manner of casting around the ends The head a' is not necessarily integral with the beams, though I prefer to make it so. The frame thus constituted of the beams and braces in one casting possesses very great rigidity and strength, and enables me to dispense with the cross rear axle shown in my former patent, as the beams possess suicient strength to give separate stub-axles attached to them all necessary rmness.
They are conb b', which stand out from attaching-plates b,
" secured to the beams by upper and lower longitudinal anges, b3 and b, the former ot' which flanges receives bolts b5, passing through lateral flanges b'upon the beams.
While I have shown the manner of attaching the axles, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as it is obvious they can be secured in many other ways.
The scraper I is braced, as more particularly shown in Fig. 9, by brace O, extending from the front end ofthe forward stub-axle b, by'
brace C' from near the center of the board to the side beam A, by brace O2 from the rear end of the board to the same beam, and by a brace, C3, to the side beam A. braces may be employed, if desired.
The fifth-wheel of the grader is-exceedingl y simple and very strong, and is constructed as follows: I recess the under side of the head a' with a straight round opening, d, and inserttherein a boss, D, formed upon the plate D', which rests upon and is bolted to the axle E of the front wheels, E'. The boss D is tapering, so that room is a'orded in the upper part of theopening d to permit the rocking ofthe axle. The king-bolt d passes through the head a', the boss, the plate, and the axle, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and the openings in those 'parts ali'ord it freedom in the various movements of the axle, as clearly shown in said ligure. The pole F is attached to the axle by means of the forwardly-projecting flanged casting F', which is preferably formed .in one piece with the boss D and its plate D', so that the same bolts which attach the latter to the axle serve, also, to attach the casting F'. The pole is inserted in this flanged casting F' and secured by bolts j'. This construction renders the union very rigid and strong and enables me to dispense with the truss arrangement shown in my former patent.
In my former machine the hand-lever for elevating the front end of the scraper-board was located at quite a remove from the drivers Seat, so that it was inconvenient to operate. I now locate said lever, which is shown at G in my present drawings, in close proximity to the driversseatG', and connect it to the scraper- Other additional IOG `tially as specified.
board by a rod, g, and an elhow-lever, g,.as shown in Fig. 8. VThe otherhand-lever, H, is connected to the scraper substantially in the manner shown in my former patent, and, as it is also located within easy reach of the driver, he is enabled to operate both levers simultaneously Without bending forward. Therear 1ip,d*, takes considerable strain from the attaching-bolts by which the boss and its plate are secured to the front axle.
I claim- 1. In a roadgradi'ng machine, the combina-V4 tion, with the arched beams and their crossbraces, of the rear Wheels mounted upon stubaxles rigidly attached to said beams, substan- 2. In a road-grading machine, the combina. tion, with the arched beams, their cross-braces, and the stub-axle b, of thescraper-board and the braces C, O', O2, and C, extending fromA the board to said axle and beams, respectively, substantially as specified. Y
Wardly-projecting hanged casting, F, secured to the axle and receiving the pole, substantially as specified.
5. In a road-grading machine, the pole and 35 its forwardly-projecting attaching-casting F', in combination with the front axle and the boss-plate attached to said axle, said casting and plate being formed in one piece, substantially as specified.
' JOSHUA MOORE.
