To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLvEs'rER C. HoL'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelby, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Land-Rollers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to land rollers, and it has for its object .to produce a device of this class of simple and improved. construction, the width of which may be varied so that while the device is constructed to oper ate on a wide swath or stretch of land, it may be collapsed to facilitate passage over narrow roads and bridges and through gateways and the like.
A further object of the invention is to produce a sectional roller which may be readily extended-or-collapsed with slight exertion on the Part of the operator.
A further object of the invention is to produce a sectional roller comprising a plurality of roller carrying frames, one of which is arranged in front while two others follow behind, the rear frames being pivot- -ally connected with adjusting bars which are pivotally connected with the front frame, means being provided for guiding the adjusting bars and for adjusting the rear frames with respect thereto.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the in vention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications withinthe scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings, Figure l is a top plan view showing the improved device in collapsed condition and with dotted lines showing the rear roller carrying frames tilted preparatory to extending the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig.3 is a top plan view showing the device with the rear roller carrying frames in extended position. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line H in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a rear ele vation of a portion of the machine.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The front roller carrying frame A and the rear roller carrying frames B are all of similar construction, each having been shown as consisting of a rectangular frame having a cross bar 15 and provided at the ends thereof with downwardly extending brackets 16 affording bearings for the pivot members 17 of the rollers 18. A draft member, such as a tongue 19, is attached to and suitably connected with the front frame A.
Mounted on the front frame A intermediate and about midway between the ends thereof is a rearwardly extending reach member 20 carrying at its rearward end a cross bar 21 which is provided near the ends thereof with slots 22 extending horizontally therethrough. Triangular brackets 23 and 23 are secured adjacent to the top and bottom faces of the reach bar near the front end thereof, the bracket 23 being interposed between the reach bar and the top face of the frame A, the cross bar 15 of the frame A, the reach bar 20 and the apices of the triangular brackets 23, 23' being connected together by a king bolt 24; a fastening member 25 extends through the bases of the trian ular frames and through the reach I bar to assemble said parts. Adjusting bars 26 are connected with the rearward corners of the triangular frames by pivot members 27, said adjusting bars extending through the slots 22 of the cross bar 21, said adjusting bars being pivotally connected with the rearward roller carrying frames B by bolts or pivot members 28 engaging the cross bars 15 of said frames B.
Each adjusting bar 26 carries a lever stand including a notched segment bar 29' with which a lever 30 is pivotally connected, said lever having a stop member 31 to engage the notches in the segment bar. Each lever is connected by a link 32 with the frame B that is pivotally connected with the adjusting bar on which the lever is mounted to enable the frame B to be tilted or rocked in a horizontal plane by means of the lever, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A seat 33 for the driver or operator is mounted on the reach bar 20.
For the purpose of securing the roller carrying frames B, B in adjusted position when extended or collapsed, there is pro The notches, 38, in the segment 36 are arranged'to be engaged by the stop member '35 when the roller carrying frames B are fully extended or fully collapsed, as the case may be, and it will be seen that the locking lever and connecting rods will serve to maintain the roller carrying frames in adjusted position at either limit of their respective movements.
The operation of this invention and the advantages thereof will be readily under stood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings. When the rearward roller frames are extended, as seen in Fig. 3, the inner ends of the rearward rollers may slightly overlap the forward roller, thus enablingthe machine to cover a Wide space of ground. When the parts are in this position, the levers 30 will be thrown forward with respect to the segment bars, as
shown, and the adjusting bars will abut on the outer end walls of the slots 22. If it is desired to collapse the machine, the levers 30 are thrown rearward, thus tilting the frames B, throwing their inner ends rearward and their outer ends in a forward direction. When the machine advances, the rollers in endeavoring to straighten out will travel obliquely in an inward direction until the position illustrated in Fig. 1 in full lines is assumed, when the adjusting bars 26 will abut on the inner end walls of the slots 22. To expand the device, the levers are thrown rearward, tilting the frames B to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, when the rollers in endeavoring to straighten out will travel obliquely in an outward. direction until the position shown in Fig. 3 is assumed. The locking lever and related parts will serve to lock the roller carrying frames l3 securely against accidental displacement when in adjusted position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
'1. In a machine of the class described, a front roller carrying frame pivotally supported adjusting bars, means whereby said bars are connected with the front frame, rear roller carrying frames pivotally connected with the adjusting bars, and means for adj listing the rear roller carrying frames about their respective pivots.
2. In a machine of the class described, a front roller carrying frame, a reach pivotally connected therewith, triangular brackets supported adjacent to the top and bottom faces of the reach and connected therewith, adjusting bars pivoted between the triangular brackets at the rearward corners thereof, and rear roller carrying frames pivotally connected with the adjusting bars.
3. In a machine of the class described, a front roller carrying frame, a reach pivotally connected therewith, triangular brackets supported adjacent to the top and bottom faces of the reach and connected therewith, adjusting bars pivoted between the triangular brackets at the rearward corners thereof, and rear roller carrying frames pivotally connected with the adjusting bars; in combination with lever standards on the adjusting bars, hand levers fulcrumed on the said standards, and links connecting the hand levers with the rear roller carrying frames.
